The Saw and Grist Mill is located in New Salem State Park, New Salem, IL.  Highway 123 runs north and south along the Mill. I had to walk down a ridge in high grass and weeds to get this angle. You can see the highway on the right side of the photo. The valley I am standing in can flood because of Sangamon River (right behind me in the picture). In town we saw a pic of water as high as the bottom of the mill building. It actually closed Highway 123.

The Mill was erected in 1829 by James Rutledge and James Camron. Camron started an eighty acres park up the hill behind the mill. Those eight acres became known as New Salem. He believed the mill would bring trade along the river. Abraham Lincoln made New Salem his home for six years before he became President.
