AMD is set to launch the up-coming 2nd generation AMD A-Series Desktop APU code name “Trinity”. The previous generation AMD APU “Llano” will be replaced by this new platform using the FM2 Socket and its new chipset configuration of the A55, A75 and A85x. If you are not familiar with AMD’s APU line of processors they combine the CPU and GPU performance under one chip and include its own discrete graphics with the onboard CPU. These are designed for the mainstream ultrathin notebooks, all-in-one PCs, traditional desktops, home theater PCs and embedded applications. The improvements we are looking to see from the 2nd generation’s APU that will be the most notable is: Double the performance per watt of the previous generation; The AMD HD Media Accelerator with a unique set of technologies designed to optimize video quality available with premium and Internet video content, and accelerate video file conversion; An increase in CPU performance of up to 29 percent3 with higher processor speeds thanks to the next-generation AMD “Piledriver” CPU core with 3rd-Generation AMD Turbo Core technology, where power is dynamically shifted between the CPU and GPU depending on application needs, effectively providing a more responsive experience that can boost CPU frequencies to up to 3.2 GHz; AMD Radeon™ HD 7000 Series graphics for an increase of graphics performance up to 56% over the previous generation.4 Combined, the CPU and GPU cores deliver more than 700 gigaflops of computing performance5 – several times more than the fastest x86 CPUs – to boost performance of hundreds of applications; Up to 12 hours of battery life through CPU and GPU power enhancements, with clear battery life leadership in notebook form factors  Second Generation AMD A-Series APUs support AMD Eyefinity technology - You can now drive three displays in a single desktop configuration directly from your motherboard (check the motherboard model to ensure support). This is unique to AMD and with our readiness for Microsoft Windows 8, Eyefinity will provide an unparalleled experience in the new Windows 8 desktop. AMD Memory Profile support. - With AMD Memory profiles, your system performance will automatically be tuned for optimal performance by setting the optimal memory settings. Bi-Directional Advanced Power Management - The second generation AMD A-Series APU supports bi-directional advanced power management. What this means is that you are now able to capitalize on available performance of your graphics cores, a new feature, and x86 cores with Turbo modes. These settings can be configured and customized using the AMD OverDrive software. New Graphics and x86 Architectures - The second generation AMD A-Series APU for desktop has been updated from our first generation A-Series with the AMD “Piledriver” cores for x86 performance and instruction improvements as well as a new VLIW4 graphics architecture. This enhancements provide performance improvements in the latest applications, and continue to run older applications with the efficiency of an AMD APU. The 2nd generation will deliver better graphics performance without having to spend the extra cost on the onboard graphics. As you can see here in some gaming bench marks provided by AMD, the A10 5800k performs great in every benchmark. AMD’s “Trinity” can be compared to its rival the Intel i3 2120/3220. The moto of AMD is “more core & more speed.” Looking at the full line of 2nd generation APUs, you can see that AMD has provided multiple application set-ups that will fit the full range of users’ budgets. The available series includes the A4, A6, A8 and A10 chips. We are looking forward to seeing the benchmarks this new platform will bring. We are sure overclocking and gaming performance will be the talked about topics of the new CPU code name: “Trinity”. The appeal will come down to its performance per value. What’s better than getting great value and high performance? Perhaps sometime in the near future PureOC might have something from this platform on the test-bench… You know we love to bring you the hard numbers, so stay tuned!
