It has been reworked and now hot! It is the classic pinafore.  This is one of fashion’s favourite ways to indulge in school girl chic. From retro fun to tough accents, apron style dresses and pinafores are having a moment in the spotlight.

It’s quirky, it’s fun, it’s youthful, it’s unbelievably easy to wear and it has made a huge comeback this season. Effortlessly mixing a striking simplicity with a concept that goes beyond casual, the apron-style dress evolved into a cool piece of clothing relying on an even more comfortable feel.

Despite covering a full spectrum of styles and being infused with some modern twists and a girly attitude, it’s still the leather pinafore that stands out as the key piece of the season. Suffice to say that there’s no right or wrong direction in embracing this casual-chic trend during the upcoming months.

Forgetting about tradition, pushing the boundaries of informality and starting up fresh, the designers met no limits when it came to giving the pinafore dress a well-deserved makeover. Some envisioned it super laid-back, while others felt the need to dress it up a notch. Different designers worked pinafore-style dresses in with different themes, from tough to sporty to retro.

Moschino’s energetic spring 2013 line-up was fabulously inspired by 1960s fashion, referencing Audrey Hepburn’s flawless style in the iconic movie, ‘Two for the Road.’ That’s why the pinafore dress took short extents in Moschino’s vision, exuding retro flavour as styled with colourful accessories, bold shades of orange lipstick and utterly-feminine bouffant hairstyles.

The same toy-like inspiration and love towards the 1960s came across Versus’ spring 2013 collection, as Christopher Kane and Donatella Versace accented their beyond playful pinafore dresses with plastic chain accessories, slick ponytails and impeccable make-up. It almost felt like wonderland.

The pinafore key style of the season was envisioned by Jason Wu in a flirty silhouette featuring a laser-cut flower detailing at the hem; a strong and bold contrast set against the toughness of the look styled with hot red lips and studded heels.

By introducing their unique vision over the strong motocross theme to the runway, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright from Rag & Bone, made sure their influence translated to a sportier vibe for spring 2013. That same effortless appeal was recognisable in the coral apron-style dress, styled with all black accessories and barely there make-up. It was all about simplicity with an edge.

Yigal Azrouel’s aesthetic was always perceived as ultra conventional and strictly based on wearability. For spring 2013, the apron-style dresses dominated his runway presentation, embracing neutral shades and abandoning them to the idea of minimalism. The clean silhouettes were emphasised by the choice of extreme styling, radiating a grace that appeared quite hard to resist.

It’s not impossible for a pinafore dress to come across as incredible sophisticated. Point and case: Christopher Kane’s spring 2013 collection, a line-up that was all about polished elegance. From the unusual folds of fabric adorning of the apron-style dress to the slick hair-styles and minimal trimming, everything read cutting edge sophistication.
