Although the existence of the recorded phone conversation only came to light today after Kim Kardashian released it via her Snapchat account on Sunday, 17, 2016, TMZ reports that the "Shake it off" singer has known about it for months now.

TMZ reportedly obtained a copy of a letter Swift's lawyer sent to Kanye's lawyer as back back as February.

The letter states that under the California law, anyone who secretly records a telephone conversation with another person within the state, commits a felony.

A source with direct knowledge of the conversation, reportedly disclosed to TMZ that the conversation had been recorded in a studio within Los Angeles.

A section of the letter allegedly reads:

"Demand is hereby made that you immediately destroy all such recordings, provide us of assurance that this has been done, and also assurance that these recordings have not been previously disseminated."

The release of the recording by Kim in a misguided bid to stand by her husband, may have given Swift the weapon she needs to drag Kanye to court.

Swifts move for a criminal prosecution may have been the reason why Kanye dared celebrities to sue him following the release of the video for his controversial single, "Famous."
