JOB SUMMARY:

The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to 2 temporary positions at Curecanti National Recreation Area. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.  Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2015

The duty station for this position is Curecanti National Recreation Area, located 16 miles west of Gunnison, Colorado. The park encompasses three reservoirs, including Blue Mesa Reservoir, the largest body of water in Colorado. The two lower reservoirs are within the spectacular Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The park is at over 7,000 feet in elevation, and has sagebrush hills, deep forested canyons, and high desert plateaus. The park is home to a variety of plants and abundant wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and big horn sheep. There are 10,000 years of human history to explore, from Ute Indians to the narrow gauge railroads and mines of the 19th century. There are abundant recreational opportunities in the area, including camping, biking, water activities, fishing, and hiking. Government housing is available. Gunnison has a population of approximately 5,000 and includes most grocery, shopping, and medical services. DUTIES:

Researches, prepares, and presents formal boat tours that meet the professional standards of interpretation.
• Roves trails and marinas providing recreation and safety information as well as informal interpretive services.
• Operates a Class I agency watercraft with the purpose of making visitor contacts by boat.
• This position will be required to successfully complete Colorado State Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) certification program and provide education on Colorado state ANS regulations to boaters entering the recreation area.
• Utilizes computers heavily in performance of duties.
• Duties are performed during periods of intense visitation. Other projects will be assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:   The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS: Night, holiday, and/or weekend work may be required.  This vacancy announcement may be used to fill additional positions.  Work performed outdoors, exposed to elements, and often on a boat.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you possess either the specialized experience or the education as described below.  Equivalent combinations of experience and education may also be used to qualify.

Selective Placement Factor (Mandatory Screen-Out): Motorboat Operator Certification

Must currently possess certification of completion of the Department of Interior Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) or an acceptable training program which meets MOCC standards. (MUST SUPPORT IN RESUME OR WILL BE RATED INELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION)

For the GS-05 grade level:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service.  Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.  Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work.  Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. -OR-B. A 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work.   One year of full time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. -OR- C. Equivalent combinations of education and experience.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.  In order to receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the number of hours worked per week.

Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek.  Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience.  No additional credit is given for overtime.

Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.

You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.  Your employment, after your tentative selection, will be contingent upon receipt of these documents in a timely manner and that those documents establish, to the satisfaction of the selecting official, that you possess a valid driver's license.

Must wear the National Park Service uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
