This is a permanent career-seasonal (subject-to-furlough) position.   Employee will be guaranteed work 6 months and may be in non-work, non-pay status 6 months.   The position includes all benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide for employment on a year-round basis.   Depending upon Park workload needs and funding, certain individuals may work more than 6 months.

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve consists of six physically separate operating sites spread out over an area of 200 miles in southeastern Louisiana.  The Park Headquarters is located in New Orleans. Services and shopping facilities are all conveniently located within the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area. Schools from pre-school through graduate school are available. A wide range of housing can be found throughout the metropolitan area. The cost of living is moderate. The commuting area extends from the West bank of the Mississippi River, upriver to LaPlace and to the north shore of Lake Pontchatrain. New Orleans is located in the humid sub-topics, with hot, humid summers (91 degrees - 102 degrees) and generally mild winters (43 degrees - 14 degrees). The city averages nearly 60 inches of rain per year. New Orleans is perhaps the most unique city in the United States, with its own distinctive history, culture, architecture,music, and cuisine. As a major port city, its population is very cosmopolitan.

DUTIES:

The duties listed are a summary and not meant to be all inclusive of what this position:  Serves as Park Guide at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center in Eunice, Louisiana, and the Acadian Cultural Center in Lafayette, Louisiana two of six sites with the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve.   The Park Guide at the Center will be primarily manning the visitor center desk operations.   They will meet, greet, orient and provide meaningful connections to the resource on a recurring basis. Will work closely with the City of Eunice to keep the center open and help facilitate programming at the Liberty each weekend.  They are also responsible Performs basic interpretive programming, and will maintain front desk operations.   Occasionally park guide will assist in cooking demonstrations, summer camps with area youth,and art and music programs. The Park Guide will do this while keeping their  supervisor informed of operational issues and details.
Park housing is not included or available.

Specialized experience is that which as equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and this is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
For GS-05:  Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a)with major study in fields such as American history, science, and/or public speaking, or (b) that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in such subjects.
OR
One year specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 in the Federal service.
