Here at The Institute for the Psychology of Eating, we understand that part of leading a healthy life is engaging in play and human movement. In our modern world, we know how difficult it can sometimes be to find a form of movement that fits into our busy lives. Here are 40 ways to experience the your body in a great way. Fitness isn’t just for weightlifters or athletes, it’s a required part of our biology, and may even be required by the inner world of the psyche. The list below is not in a particular order, but we feel that each one offers new ideas and paths to play, breathe, and understanding your body in a different way. They’re all ranked highly in our eyes!

2. All-Natural Athlete - Megan Jennings is a part-time vegan, full-time athlete, 100% All-natural…. Life-long admirer of the human body, admitted food purist, and a lover of 5:30am lifting sessions and hilly half marathons. Who else is ready?!

3. Athletic Foodie – Garrett Weber-Gale is an Olympic gold-medalist and a self-described foodie who knows firsthand that good nutrition is key to athletic success. His site offers healthy recipes to try and different strategies for living a healthy and fit life.

4. Barefoot Running @ Harvard – If you were ever curious about how humans ran before they were introduced to the modern shoe, this is the website for you. The information on this site comes from a respected research lab at Harvard dedicated to studying the biomechanics of endurance running.

5. The Ballet Blog – Lisa Howell, a physiotherapist in Australia, started a clinic devoted to providing one-on-one rehabilitation and technique correction for dancers in a caring environment. The Ballet Blog is an expansion of this clinic and is the online destination for dancers looking to learn about injuries or how to improve technique.

6. Born Fitness – Adam Bornstein is a well-known writer for fitness publications who believes that it is difficult to make sense of all of the different fitness advice and facts. His site, Born Fitness, wants to help filter out the junk so you can understand and transform your body.

7. Coach Scott Abel - Scott realized early on that people’s physique goals were not ends in themselves. People didn’t really want the enhanced physique. They wanted what they thought the enhanced physique would bring to their lives. He understood that in our modern world, we need a balanced proportion of mental, emotional, and physical well-being, the three elements in what he calls: the Triangle of Awareness

8. Everyday Paleo Life & Fitness – EPL&F is the collaborative effort of three paleo fitness extraordinaires: Sarah and John Fragoso (of Everyday Paleo) and Jason Seib. This is a great way to begin building strength and ranges of motion that help support athletic performance and overall fitness, from beginner modules to more advanced programs.

9. Dance Spirit - Dance Spirit is a magazine designed and written for people who love — and live — to dance. The magazine contains useful tips for learning new dance techniques, following the hottest dance styles, and maintaining a healthy body and mind.

10. The Glowing Edge – The Glowing Edge is written by a woman who is a professional writer and marketer and competitive boxer. Her website covers her experiences in and out of the ring — everything from training for fights, sparring with new boxers, and going on family camping trips with her three boys.

11. Gain Fitness - GainFitness wants personal training to be instantly available to anyone who is ready to work out. When you use their app, you receive customized workout plans built by personal trainers based on your body, goals, and lifestyle.

12. Get Sweaty -  Get Sweaty is designed to encourage kids to engage in daily physical activity. The site also offers ideas to help parents and educations make physical activity more fun for kids, as well as to help them make healthy food choices.

13. Gudni Gunnarrson - Gudni Gunnarsson is the creator of GlóMotion, a one-of-a-kind fitness system that merges traditional yoga with modern technology. GlóMotion helps people increase their awareness as they practice mindful training of their bodies, minds, and soul.

14. Exuberant Animal - Frank Forencich designed Exuberant Animal to be a “leadership organization that promotes performance, health, team cohesion and physical happiness”. The organization helps individuals and organizations meet the challenges of modern day living, such as sedentary lifestyles and chronic stress, while also remaining fit and balanced.

15. The Fruitarian – Michael Arnstein’s recipe for health includes following a fruitarian diet, getting lots of exercise, having time for sufficient sleep, and engaging in positive relationships. His website highlights why eating a diet full of fruits works for him and how it even helps fuel him as he completes 100+ mile races.

16. Fitness Black Book - Rusty Moore started his blog, Fitness Black Book, back in 2007 as a place to share his own non-bodybuilding approach to training. Over the past six years, the site has expanded to cover more topics on nutrition and celebrities’ approaches to fitness, as well as to provide a very popular online free course called Abs Blueprint.

17. Fit Mama Training – Fit Mama offers personalized training programs for women who are ready to remove the physical and mental barriers to health and wellness. She also writes a self-described “bad ass” blog that motivates women to quit the self-hate and make peace with their bodies.

18. Lani Muelrath - If you’re truly ready to make change andd begin being accountable to your body’s fitness and health NOW, Lani Meulrath might be a good place to start. She’s a huge proponent for Plant-Based nutrition and fitness strategies. Tire-kickers need not apply.

19. LL Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools – The L.L.Bean Discovery Schools provide all the instruction and tools you need for being active in the great outdoors. They offer courses in archery, stand-up paddleboarding, cross-country skiing, canoeing,and bicycling, as well as the opportunity to design your own sporting adventure course!

20. Mov Nat - Erwan Le Corre is the founder of “MovNat”, a synthesis of his long-term passion for real-world physical competency, his love of movement in nature, his extensive knowledge of Physical Education history, and his personal philosophy of life. He believes it is everyone’s universal and biological birthright to be strong, healthy, happy and free. He calls this state of being our “True Nature”.

21. Vibes Fitness – Australia – Vibes Fitness is a gym in Australia that offers pilates classes, sport specific training, personal training services, life coaching, and corporate wellness programs. Their list of services and classes is so comprehensive that it may make you wonder why your gym does not offer anti-gravity yoga and educational courses on the lymphatic system.

22. Fit Bottom Girls – The Fit Bottomed Girls, Erin and Jenn, know that health and wellness are not about counting calories or watching the number of the scale, but about engaging in activities you love, eating good, healthy food, and having a positive outlook on life. Their blog is not afraid to tell it like it is and offers all sorts of information on new fitness gear reviews, personal accounts of their exercise endeavors, tidbits on healthy food, workout music playlists, and fitness humor.

23. Dr. Michelle Cleere - Dr. Michelle Cleere offers sports psychology coaching to professional, Olympic, and amateur, as well as performance coaching for musicians, writers, actors, executives, and non-profit leaders. Her work and blog focus on helping us see the deep connection between our mind and body and how changing our mindset can really help us achieve our goals.

24. Girls Gone Strong – Girls Gone Strong is the work of three women who want to break down the barriers that prevent women from maximizing the strength of their body, mind and character. Besides offering numerous tips for exercising, cooking, managing time and finding balance, the website also inspires with words such as: “Thou shalt not require assistance moving furniture.”

25. The Great Fitness Experiment – Charlotte Hilton Andersen reads all of the health and fitness research she can get her hands on and then tests it out either on herself or on her dedicated Gym Buddies. Her website describes their successes and failures trying new health and fitness regimes, as well as being a chronicle of her own wellness journey in a fun yet informative voice.

26. John Spencer Ellis – John Spencer Ellis is an award-winning fitness and personal development expert, philanthropist, entrepreneur, professional speaker, author, and martial artist. His work and words are inspiring to others who are called to the fields of fitness, health, and nutrition.

27. Swing this Kettlebell – Swing This Kettlebell and Functional Strength is a gym located just south of Cincinnati, Ohio that offers kettle-bell classes and training. Their blog provides useful training tips, ideas, and motivation for those of us that cannot make it to Cincinnati to train in the gym.

28. Q by Equinox – One of the goals of Q by Equinox is the change the conversation about fitness and wellness. They want people to know that the ultimate investment they can make is devoting energy and time into taking care of their bodies through physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and work/life balance.

29. iTrain - Grace Lazenby, a fitness expert in the Hollywood training industry, and Sebastian Reant, an entertainment industry executive, co-founded this popular mp3-based training tool. iTrain combines knowledgeable fitness instructors with energetic music to create routines that can be downloaded anytime you are ready for an intense, portable workout.

30. MiZFit Online -  Carla Birnberg’s health motto is “fitness isn’t about fitting in”. She believes that we all have the same goal of living a healthier and more vibrant life, but that we all must follow our own unique path to achieving this goal.

31. Ultra Runner Girl – Stephanie Case is the Ultra Runner Girl who has completed a number of ultra races all over the world. Her blog documents her experience training and running wherever she is living, the conversations she has with other ultra runners, and practical advice for others interested in running very, very long distances.

32. Strong Healthy Woman – Laura Miranda is the owner of Strong Healthy Woman, a company that develops boot camps and running camps just for women. If it is not possible for you to join one of the camps in-person, you also have the option of signing up for a Virtual Training Club that provides weekly workouts, nutrition plans, grocery lists, and inspirational emails to keep you motivated.

33. Tony Horton – Tony Horton is the man behind the best-selling P90X fitness program that is known for its results-driven, intense workouts. With the right mix of discipline, humor, and encouragement, Tony is the trainer and fitness expert to go to if you want to try out circuit, cross, and interval training.

34. Roman Fitness Systems – John Romaniello is a New York based personal trainer, coach, author, and model who describes himself as “A fitness dude who makes people laugh.  Or maybe I’m a comedy dude who makes people fit.” His website is the perfect combination of humor, fitness motivation, and random postings about books, sex, and how to live an awesome life.

35. Jackie Warner – Jackie Warner is a fitness expert and media star who has helped thousands of people achieve their fitness and lifestyle goals. In addition to opening a number of innovative brick and mortar gyms, Jackie has also started an online fitness and wellness center known as Eat.Move.Believe.

36. US Masters Swimming - U.S. Masters Swimming is a non-profit organization that provides membership benefits to adult swimmers across the U.S Their website is packed with information on upcoming swimming events, training techniques, practical tips for what to bring to the pool, definitions of common swimming jargon, and how to circle swim.

37. Zumba – Zumba’s motto is “ditch the workout, join the party”. If you have ever participated in a Zumba fitness-dance class, purchased one of their DVD workouts, or listened to a Zumba music collection, you know their motto is very, very true.

38. Let’s Move – Let’s Move is an initiative begun by First Lady, Michelle Obama, to encourage children to live active, healthy lives. While the initiative is geared towards children, the information on the Let’s Move site is for parents, caregivers, and teachers who are interested in learning how they can help their communities become healthier places for children to live.

39. Tough Mudder - Tough Mudder events are obstacle courses designed to challenge physical and mental strength, stamina, and perseverance. The events happen all over the world, raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, and have had over one million hardcore participants to date.

40. Wilderness Awareness School – Wilderness Awareness School is a not-for-profit environmental education organization that offers courses in ancient and modern ecological wisdom, such as foraging wild edible plants and wildlife tracking. The curriculum of the school encourages students of all ages to continue to learn from nature even when their coursework is complete.
