Here at The Institute for the Psychology of Eating, we’re constantly in wonder about the power of the human psyche and consciousness. We wanted to provide what we feel are some of the top sources, personalities, and new research to consider when exploring the depth of psychology. We’re sure you’ll find something interesting and educational. The list below is not in a particular order but they’re all ranked highly in our eyes!

1. Daniel G. Amen – Dr. Daniel Amen is a physician, teacher, best-selling author, and expert on how to use brain imaging science in daily clinical practice. The Amen Clinics house the world’s most comprehensive library of brain scans relating to behavior.

2. The Angry Therapist – John Kim is a Marriage Family Therapist who works with individual clients, couples, and groups through his online therapy practice. Using a suite of technology tools, The Angry Therapist has created a therapeutic community that supports one another as they take their personal growth work outside of the therapy room.

3. Association for Humanistic Psychology - A collaborative effort by educators, doctors, nurses, community activists, students, writers, musicians, artists, counselors, scientists, architects, anyone who wants to make a difference. While it has humanized and revolutionized psychology with its emphasis on our conscious ability to choose and create, AHP is not just for psychologists – everyone is welcome.

4. Center for the Psychology of Women – Center for the Psychology of Women provides non-judgmental and thought-provoking therapy that deconstructs the effect social, cultural, historical and political factors have on your life. We examine the roles we play in our lives, the transitions we make between these roles, and how it affects the way we think and feel about ourselves. They have seven stellar specialties.

5. Child-Psych - Check out the brain child of Dr. Nestor Lopez-Duran, a research-based informational blog about child psychology, parenting, and childhood disorders; providing reviews of the latest scientific findings on a number of psychiatric and neuro and developmental disorders in a style that is accessible to parents, educators, and clinicians.

6. Emergent by Design - Emergent by Design is an exploration into what it means to be human in an accelerating world, as seen through the mind and heart of Venessa Miemis, a curious observer, sense-maker, and free spirit. Venessa’s background in psychology, social theory, and media studies, combined with interests in futures studies, systems theory, and consciousness research create a unique perspective from which to think about massive change.

7. Evolutionary Psychiatry – Emily Deans, MD is a psychiatrist in practicing in Massachusetts who explores why it is that our brains and bodies operate best in the conditions for which they evolved. She is on the “hunt for evolutionary solutions to contemporary mental health problems.”

8. Extraordinary Ordinary – Heather King is a mom and a contributor at Owning Pink and A Deeper Family who has also has a background in social work, providing services for people struggling with mental illness. Her blog is about all of life — the good, the bad, and everything in between.

9. We’re Only Human – Journalist Wray Herbert writes about the quirks of human nature. Former staff writer and editor for Science News, Psychology Today, US News & World Report, and Newsweek. He’s contributes regulalry to Huffington Post and Scientific American Mind. His work has also appeared in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, the Washington Post, and many other national publications.

10. Laura Freberg - Laura Freberg is professor of Psychology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Her blog is a space for sharing and exploring the science and experience of psychology, and it is where she proves she does a lot more than teach, advice, and research.

11. Judith Hendin – Judith Hendin is a somatic therapist who developed a method that uses dialogue and creative processes to understand the messages our bodies are sending us. Judith incorporates her background in movement arts and bodywork into her therapeutic approach, which results in dynamic and powerful transformations.

12. Mind Hacks – Tom Stafford and Matt Webb published the book, Mind Hacks, in order to help people understand how efficient and effective brains work. The blog is a reflection of their book as it offers neuroscience and psychology tools to figure out what is really going on inside your brain.

13. The Neurocritic – Simple layout, academic in nature, and also anonymous, critical, mischievous: “Deconstructing the most sensationalistic recent findings in Human Brain Imaging, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Psychopharmacology”

14. Mary O’Malley – Mary O’Malley is an author, teacher, and counselor who works with clients to remove their barriers to life’s joys. Through individual counseling, classes, retreats, and her books, Mary “invites people to experience the miracle of awakening”

15. Mentally Interesting: The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive – A regularly updated blog by Seaneen Molloy on issues relating to mental health, including bipolar disorder, social phobia and body dysmorphic disorder.

16. Neuron Culture - A blog by David Robbs, leans towards neuoscience and cognition but also writes with incredible wit and exploration of common psycho-social issues.

17. The Tapping Solution w/ Nick Ortner – Nicolas Ortner is the CEO of The Tapping Solution, a business with the goal of bringing Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or “tapping” into the mainstream. The Tapping Solution educates about EFT, a combination of acupressure and modern psychology, through films, books, a coaching program and its popular online “Tapping World Summit”.

18. Peak Performance Sports - At Peak Performance Sports blog, you learn cutting-edge mental toughness tips from sports psychology expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn. Dr. Cohn is the owner and founder of Peaksports.com. Dr. Cohn works with athletes and teams worldwide to help them reach peak performance in sports.

19. Pat Ogden PhD – Dr. Pat Ogden is the Founder/Director of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy® Institute, a school focused on a somatic approach to clinical psychology practice. The school offers training programs, workshops, conferences, and continuing education opportunities to therapists who want to incorporate body-centered interventions in the treatment of trauma, attachment, and development issues.

20. PsyBlog – PsyBlog was launched in 2004 by the witty Jeremy Dean “when he noticed a dearth of smart, readable news for those who like psychological insights backed up by science.” Dean shares psychological studies relevant to everyday life and how the mind works.

21. Dr. Lehmiller & The Psychology of Human Sexuality – Run by Dr. Justin J. Lehmiller, Ph.D. who currently teaches in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, the Psychology of Human Sexuality was created in order to share the science of sex, love, and relationships in a way that is both engaging and accessible. It is a far cry from most of the other websites out there run by self-proclaimed “sexperts” who spout advice based largely upon their own personal experiences and beliefs.

22. Radio Lab – This is Radiolab’s online presence: If you don’t know NPR’s Radiolab, you should: It’s is a show about curiosity, about blurring the boundaries between science, philosophy, and human psychological experience. Radiolab is heard around the country on over 300 stations.

23. Rob McNamara – Rob McNamara is author of The Elegant Self and Strength to Awaken. He specializes in helping people resolve their persistent painful limitations to become more powerful, proficient and aligned with what matters most in life. Rob is a skilled Psychotherapist, leading Performance Coach, Psychology Professor at Naropa University and an Integral Zen Practitioner.

24. The Change Blog – Peter Clemens launched to The Change Blog back in 2007 when he began a process of inner-work to change himself into the person and father he aspired to be. Over the years, the blog has evolved into being a community-driven blog written by people from all over the world who are making positive personal changes in their lives.

25. Sparring Mind – You can be a misanthrope all you like, but the fact is you have to understand what makes people “tick” (as well as what makes YOU tick) if you seek to be more persuasive and influential. If nothing else, it benefits you to understand how others are trying to influence you on a daily basis!
