About the speakers

Debora Patta

Why South Africa still Matters! Ten reasons why SA remains the best place to be!

“For every one South African holding out a gun, there are ten more holding out a hand of friendship.”  This remains true despite all the issues South Africa faces.  Renowned local and international broadcaster Debora Patta spends most of her time with the darkest part of humanity but in this talk she speaks about why, despite all the bad she witnesses, South Africa remains one of the best places to live and do business in.

This is no fluffy light-hearted address – but a gritty, tell-all approach that reveals South Africa warts and all.  Be moved to tears  and fall in love with South Africa all over again as Debora  Patta takes a long hard look at this country through the perspective of more than twenty years of tough reporting.

About Debora

Debora Patta is one of the most respected broadcasters in South Africa.

Her 20-year career spans radio and television as both an on-air newswoman and a senior editorial manager. She began working in radio freelancing for the BBC and in 1990 started at the well-known Johannesburg-based talk radio station 702.  Here she started as a reporter and worked her way up to News Editor covering some of the biggest stories of the day.  She is particularly well-known for her coverage of Nelson Mandela from his release to his election as South Africa’s first black head of state and of course his presidency.

Debora has co-authored two books Baby Micaela and One Step Behind Mandela.

She has covered stories ranging from South Africa’s township violence in the late eighties and early nineties, Nelson Mandela’s release and Presidency, Princess Diana’s Death, 9/11, Obama Election campaign and virtually every major event in South Africa’s history over the past 20 years.  She has interviewed heads of state, business leaders, actors and actresses – all in her trademark tough interviewing style.

PARENTING ON THE RUN®

Parents today are busy and they often carry around a mantle of guilt. Being able to parent creatively – on the run – and learning how to be really present when you are with your children, makes parenting easier and much more fun.  In this acclaimed interactive presentation, creative parenting expert Nikki Bush, introduces the concept of cheating time and turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

While Parenting on the Run is designed for parents, if you don’t have young children but manage a business team filled with parents, it will still be relevant to you.  You will gain insight into the connection between parental guilt and workplace productivity as well as the importance of supporting parents to be the best they can be both at home and at work.  Parenting on the Run is a workshop Nikki presents at many corporate events and as part of the Wits Business School’s Executive Development Programme, precisely because parenting should be on the leadership agenda.

Connecting at Work

In this fun an interactive keynote participants will:

Discover the value of healthy social interaction in the workplace.

Identify attitudes that help to develop healthy relationships in the workplace.

Learn the impact of relatedness on mental capability and performance.

Break down the barriers of unfamiliarity and guardedness through interactive exercises and creative dialog.

Identify how they can contribute to create a culture that fosters healthy social interaction.

About Petro

In 1994 when South Africa was seeing its rebirth as the ‘Rainbow Nation’, Petro Janse van Vuuren was in her third year at varsity in Stellenbosh. Here she studied Theology and was the only female in a class of males. But that‘s not all, she was also the only white student in the traditionally coloured residence, Goldfields. This was the year that she truly discovered what it means to connect with people. At the end of that year, she decided not to continue her studies in Theology, but to pursue Theatre because, she argued, it was her ability to act that taught her how to get real and stories that helped her connect with her male colleagues and her res mates. She went on to pursue the connecting power of story and theatre past PhD level, and has impacted the actions and stories of companies like Mediclinic, Sanlam Investments, SAB and many more.

Julie Filmer

Conquering Mountains

This keynote will inspire, empower, enlighten and entertain you and focus you on opportunities, not obstacles.

Through sharing her real life experiences, Julie’s inspirational take-action-now keynote is guaranteed to set the scene for you.

It’s not what happens to us that matters, but how we respond.

We are all on a climb, our own personal journey and on our journeys, we are all carrying backpacks. Often the journey is going according to plan and then life gets in the way. It throws out a curve ball. Change happens. Are we able to bounce forward and hit home-runs off those curved balls or do we become stuck and victims of our circumstances? It depends on what we are carrying.

To respond effectively, one of the items we need to be carrying and know how to use are the three “R’s” of Resilience: REVIEW, REFRAME, RESPOND.

There are other items too which Julie shares throughout her dynamic keynote.

You can be the MASTER of your journey, at work and in your personal life, if you carry and remember to use the appropriate tools.

About Julie

Julie has travelled and spoken extensively since the mid 1990’s on the importance of caring for South Africa’s natural heritage and her people. Her aim has always been to create a culture where all people are automatically integrated into the planning, development and execution of facilities, programmes and resources within the context of the natural environment.

Through her dynamic environmental-cum-social presentations, helped to pioneer accessible eco-tourism opportunities, environmental tours, hiking and interpretative trails and camps which have enriched thousands of lives worldwide.
