European Commission proposals for olive oil in restaurants and bars have the Spain government done to a new Spanish law. The action is a recommendation from the EU, which, however, took back the proposal to introduce a decree by the hot reactions it brought in the restaurant business.

The reason for the new law, which will come into force on 1 January, is “an attempt to stimulate competition between producers in the EU and prevent cheating,” said the Spanish government.

Olive oil can no longer be poured in elegant bottles that can stand on tables in restaurants and bars. Under the new Spanish law means that all the oil must be in labeled containers showing the origin, producer and sustainability. This means that beautiful plastic bottles many restaurants and bars are using today will be illegal.

This means that restaurants, caterers and cafeterias need to ensure teams have bottles that have a mechanism that allows the bottles can not be replenished – the same type that is on the liquor bottles.

The Spanish government claims that there have been instances where containers and bottles as advertised with oil of the highest quality have been found to contain less expensive, mass-produced oil.

The new requirements will make it difficult for small local growers to sell their quality oil, because most of them can give them a costly transition to new types of bottles. The system will also lead to more glass and plastic waste from new types of bottles in Spain, property marbella.

Restaurant sector in Spain is raging, however, and says that it is up to each one to serve their customers as well as olive oil conscience allows. Also stresses spokesmen for the restaurateurs to edict means the end of the homemade aromatic oils, with olive oil mixed in carafes with garlic, chili, or different types of herbs.

“To prohibit this also means banning something that is typical of Malaga where olive oil mixed in bottles of all kinds of spices such as garlic, rosemary, thyme, bay leaf and pepper. This is part of our identity, ” says Rafael Prado president of the business association Aehma (Asociación de Empresarios de Hostelería in Málaga) but also the owner of Café Central on the plaza de la Constitución in Fuengirola.

To prevent the restaurants and bars have to throw out the oil they use today and that they have in stock will be a transitional period until 28 February 2014. After this date, they must use only bottles with their name, origin and nutritional information is available to the public.

The system is already in place in Italy and Portugal, and is now being introduced in Spain, where it is believed to lead to an improvement in oil exports, but rising oil prices on the domestic market.
