BBQ and bonfire is always a warmth and atmosphere, but it is easy to get in any doubt about where and when you may turn up in the dry season. Even if you have a permit, it will be canceled if it goes wrong. The law says that the fire is always your responsibility. How do you best, the fire get out of hand?

Recently, residents of Mallorca suffered the destructive force of a forest fire has. The forst fire started because of one man’s carelessness and devoured 1,800 acres of nature.

We all remember the big forest fire in Mijas, Calahonda and Marbella last summer when over 8,000 acres burned and over 200 properties where damaged or destroyed.

The best advice is: do not light a fire in the dry season, if you do not want to be responsible for a forest fire. If you are in doubt whether you can control the fire, so do not turn up. This applies to both bonfires and barbecues.

The rules for where you must make a fire may vary from region to region. If you should have started a fire or a grill, it is always a good idea to contact your local authorities before. In most cases the local authority to provide advice and guidance on how you can turn up and what you should be careful. 

In Andalusia, the law says that you have to have a permit to turn up, no matter where it is. Such a permit means that the Guardia Civil control of the territory where you are planning to turn up. Between 1st June and 15 October, it is totally forbidden to turn up in wooded areas.

Junta de Andalucía has created a guide to how you can best protect your house if you live in a wooded area.

You can be fined if you turn fire without authorization or in prohibited areas. If you have permission, you can not just turn up as you please. If you lose control of the fire, your license canceled and you have to pay both a fine and the cost to extinguish the fire. The authorization will also be canceled if it starts to blow up.

If you start a forest fire, you are sentenced to jail from six months to 20 years in length and fines. If you start a forest fire that cost human lives, is punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison plus a fine. On top, there may be murder charges with a maximum penalty of 10-15 years in prison.

If you see a forest fire on Costa del Sol

if smoke or suspect a fire somewhere, contact the Guardia Civil on 062 They will then consider whether to enable other authorities, to check for permits to turn up. If you have just a little suspect a fire, it is a good idea to call. Also, if you discover a fire, it is good to call. Caution pays off.
