In Fort Lee, NJ, a 19-year-old student who resides in the Bronx reportedly fled the scene of a motor vehicle accident that left one person with severe injuries.

The auto accident occurred at the intersection of Bergen Boulevard and Route 5 in Fort Lee, New Jersey. A truck belonging to Jordaniel Ortega reportedly struck another vehicle on Bergen Boulevard after Ortega drove into traffic. Ortega allegedly made the move into the other lane in an effort to avoid another vehicle that had come to a complete stop at a traffic light.

According to Gurbir S. Grewal, the acting prosecutor for Bergen County, Ortega got out of his car and left his passenger, who sustained serious injuries, at the scene of the crash. The injured passenger is still hospitalized at Hackensack University Medical Center with severe injuries. At this time, law enforcement has not released information about the total number of people who may have suffered injuries in the accident. Moreover, authorities have not yet named the victim who was severely injured in the motor vehicle collision.

At first, police officers who arrived at the scene of the accident stated that three people involved in the accident suffered injuries and were subsequently transported to a local hospital. Two of the injury victims were passengers in a BMW with New York license plates, while the other injured motorist was behind the wheel of an Audi sedan with NJ license plates. Witnesses said that the BMW hit a pole and sustained severe damages to the passenger-side door.

Ortega was later located by Fort Lee police officers and placed under arrest. He faces the following charges:

Placing an injured victim in danger.

Leaving the scene of an accident in which the victim suffers severe bodily injury.

Aggravated assault by auto.

Causing an injury while driving with a suspended license.

In addition, Ortega may be subject to civil actions for negligently injuring the other parties.
