The ISO 21500, the new ISO standard on Project Management had been presented by Mrs. Girija Pillai –(M-Tech , PMP, Prince2 practitioner, certified scrum master and ITIL certified in service operations, project/programme management consultant, PM Award Winner 2013 and ISO 21500 Trainer Associate at ProjectManagers.org - based out of Mumbai, India) at the PMI Mumbai chapter monthly Talk event conducted at  Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management and Engineering (MPSTME) on January 25th 2014.



 It is an initiative of PMI Mumbai Chapter and *SVKM's NMIMS's MPSTME to jointly organize regular Talk events to enhance understanding of Project Management knowledge among practitioners and student community. 

The PMI branch at NMIMS is the first student branch formed in Asia and is done as part of PMI’s initiative to spread project management knowledge among student communities.

ISO 21500:2012, Guidance on project management is the new standard for project management released by international standards organisation. ISO 21500 is the first in a planned family of project management standards. 

It is designed to align with related International Standards such as ISO 10006:2003, Quality management systems − Guidelines for quality management in projects, ISO 10007:2003, Quality management systems − Guidelines for configuration management, ISO 31000:2009, Risk management - Principles and guidelines, and some sector-specific standards in industries such as aerospace and IT. 

This standard can be used by any type of organization, including public, private or community organizations, and for any type of project, irrespective of complexity, size and duration. With pressure on business for faster and cheaper results, a new ISO standard for good practice in project management will increase efficiency and maximize the effect of investments. 
 

The presentation explained the evolution of the new ISO standard which is a guideline and how it is developed, its importance in the world of project management, ISO 21500 overview, also gave a comparison with PMI PMPBOK 5th edition.

The topic attracted the attention of a large community of experts from different industries that were present at the event including the President, PMI Mumbai chapter. The discussion hour helped to express thoughts, ideas and opinions about the topic for the audience. 

The event was concluded with the point that there is an international standard for project management which is a guideline now and it will become a standard for certification in the near future. 

Additionally, the audience is enlightened with the idea that for the purpose of research on project management standards users are encouraged to share their views on ISO 21500 and their priorities for the future editions of the document for  which currently an online survey is open for the same by ISO (International standards organisation) at its official site www.iso.org, which can be accessed at www.surveymonkey.com/s/21500 , expecting contributions from project practitioners across the world – encouraging experts to record their views at the survey site.
