Climate Change

Climate change affects us all: our health, our livelihoods, our hope for the future.

Shaklee has taken consistent steps to reduce our climate impacts and help find solutions to the climate crisis. It’s one of the ways we work toward a better future.

Shaklee Corporation is the first certified Climate Neutral Company in the world, having earned that distinction back in the relative “dark ages” of voluntary corporate climate action in 2000. In our ongoing efforts to minimize our negative impacts and maximize our positive impacts, Shaklee purchases 100% renewable energy, renewable energy credits, and greenhouse gas emissions offsets for worldwide activities.

Given the increasingly rapid rate of climate change, and understanding that these changes are taking place more quickly than the best science predicted, Shaklee has aligned its vision for a better future with its day-to-day and long-term business activities.

SHAKLEE’S 2012 CARBON NEUTRAL PROTOCOL

Shaklee is carbon neutral. The greenhouse gas inventory for 2012 covering all Shaklee operations worldwide including the US, Canada, Japan, China, Mexico, Malaysia and Taiwan, was reviewed by a third party, WSP Environment & Energy, in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for all six Kyoto-defined greenhouse gases. Shaklee set operational boundaries for the inventory of its worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and calculated the carbon footprint from Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The total amount of Shaklee’s greenhouse gas emissions from worldwide operations in 2012 was measured and converted to metric tons of CO2 equivalent. Shaklee has partnered with Sterling Planet to offset its small carbon footprint in North America and Asia with funding for alternative energy projects. The projects include Green-e certified renewable energy credits (Oklahoma wind projects) and landfill gas utilization projects in the United States.

SHAKLEE 2010 GLOBAL CARBON FOOTPRINT

Emissions Reductions

In 2000, Shaklee obtained Climate Neutral certification and totally offset its greenhouse gas emissions.

From 2000 to 2012, Shaklee reduced its U.S. GHG emissions by 34%. Some of those reductions were achieved through consolidating our distribution and maximizing distribution efficiencies. Others were a result of targeted efforts to conserve water, gas and electricity in company-controlled facilities. Shaklee plans to continue to offset 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously working toward an additional 10% utilization reduction.

REDUCTION PORTFOLIO

Shaklee plans to continue to offset 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions including all new and expanding offices worldwide. Additionally, Shaklee continues to look at ways to reduce its footprint. Some of the projects Shaklee implemented in the recent past include:

Replaced incandescent lighting with compact fluorescent (CFL) lighting.

Installed motion sensor power strip in each office cubical, to cut down on unnecessary power draw. These strips turn off task lights and computer monitors after five minutes of inactivity.

Mandatory shutdown of all computers every evening.

Completed a lighting retrofit at the Groveport distribution facility including skylight installation.

Shaklee also works closely with its electricity supplier to voluntarily shed load to help avoid rolling blackouts.

Resource Conservation

Responsible resource use and conservation are part of Shaklee’s founding belief that the health and prosperity of people and the planet offer the greatest hope for a better world.

Energy and resource conservation are a significant component of realizing that hope. Shaklee has reduced and continues to work toward further reducing its footprint by using energy and resources wisely. In addition to offsetting 100% of our greenhouse gas emissions, the company works to reduce its consumption of electricity and gas as well as materials use through reducing our packaging, reusing shipping cartons, and utilizing post-consumer recycled paper.

Carbon Neutral Offset Projects

Shaklee’s 2011 carbon neutral protocol

Shaklee is carbon neutral. The greenhouse gas inventory for 2011 covering all Shaklee operations worldwide include US, Canada, Japan, China, Mexico, Malaysia and Taiwan, were reviewed by a third party, WSP Environment & Energy, in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for all six Kyoto-defined greenhouse gases. Shaklee set operational boundaries for the inventory of its worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and worked with WSP Environment & Energy to calculate the carbon footprint from Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The total amount of Shaklee’s greenhouse gas emissions from worldwide operations in 2011 was measured and converted to metric tons of CO2 equivalent. Shaklee has partnered with Sterling Planet to offset its small carbon footprint in North America and Asia with funding for alternative energy projects. The projects include Green-e certified renewable energy credits (Iowa wind projects) and a landfill gas utilization project in Massachusetts.

Solar-Powered Lighting Installation

SRI LANKA AND INDIA

Less than 25% of the populations in Sri Lanka and India have access to electricity. Solar photovoltaics offer a healthy alternative to extending the power grid or constructing fossil-fueled power plants. Shaklee supported a project to replace kerosene lamps, diesel generators and batteries with solar photovoltaics in Sri Lanka and India. Over the 20-year lifetime, one household 35 watt solar photovoltaic system will prevent more than six tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

MALAWI, AFRICA

Shaklee partnered with Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and The Earth Institute at Columbia University to install solar-powered lighting in African villages. This project provides a sustainable energy resource to remote areas and also supports the 2015 United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals. The installation of solar-powered LED lanterns in 2007 replaces inefficient and unhealthy kerosene wick lamps and encourages renewable energy sources as a sustainable model. For the villagers, this will have a tremendous impact and provide the means for increased productivity, higher earnings potential, and expanded hours for education.

Wind Energy

Shaklee supported construction of The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Wind Turbine Project–the first large-scale Native American owned and operated wind turbine. The 750 kilowatt turbine was installed by Native Energy on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota.

Shaklee also funded wind turbine projects in Oregon and Texas to fulfill its commitment with the US EPA Climate Leaders Program to offset all of its greenhouse gas emissions from US operations and use Green-e certified renewable energy.? In 2007, Shaklee became the first consumer products company to offset 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions through the EPA Climate Leader’s program and use 100% Green Power.

RECS

Shaklee purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) from a wind energy facility located in Oklahoma to offset electricity use for two calendar years. Previously, Shaklee’s RECs came from the Hancock Wind Energy Center, home to 148 different 660-kilowatt turbines with a total capacity of 98 megawatts – enough electricity to power approximately 33,000 US homes. Another benefit of this wind farm is that the land remains in agricultural use while the turbines are in operation, using the same amount of land for multiple uses and benefits. Most recently, Shaklee has continued to purchase Green-e certified 100% renewable wind for our renewable energy credits.

Fuel Conversion

PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Portland Public Schools had about 200 steam generating boilers which were not cost effective. Shaklee helped fund a project to switch boilers in the Portland schools from oil burners to standard gas burners, which increases efficiency. The retrofit lowered carbon emissions and also reduced energy costs for the school district.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SCHOOL BUSES

The majority of school children in the United States travel to school each day riding in school buses run on traditional petroleum-based diesel fuel. These buses expose children and others in the community to dangerous pollutants that are harmful to their health. Shaklee supported a project to convert school buses in San Bernardino County, California from petroleum-based diesel fuel to biodiesel fuel made from vegetable oil, a renewal source. The retrofit not only decreased greenhouse gas emissions, but it also reduced tailpipe emissions of pollutants that can aggravate asthma in children.

OFFSETS

At the Greater New Bedford landfill in Dartmouth, Massachusetts it was common practice to vent the methane from the landfill’s decomposing organic matter directly into the atmosphere. In 2005, Commonwealth New Bedford Energy LLC, who operates the landfill, chose to invest in a project that captures the landfill methane and burns it to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1,500 US homes. This repurposes the methane from waste gas to energy for consumption and also allows the landfill to remain in operation. Shaklee supported this project monetarily through purchasing greenhouse gas offsets generated by the project. Landfill gas utilization, in contrast to many other energy sources, requires relatively small amounts of additional land resources.  Through 2011, we have continued to utilize landfill gas offsets.

2012: Shaklee continues to measure our carbon footprint and maintain net zero emissions, as well as participate in the EPA’s Green Power Partnership.

EPA Green Power

Shaklee is the first consumer products company to offset 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions through the EPA climate leaders program and use 100% green power.

Electricity generation is one of the leading causes of industrial air pollution in the U.S. Most of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, which produces carbon dioxide.

ELECTRICITY GENERATION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR:

38% of the nation’s carbon dioxide (CO2), one of six greenhouse gases and a major contributor to climate change. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned. Climate change is a serious environmental threat that may contribute to coastal flooding, more frequent and extreme heat waves, more intense droughts, an increase in the number of storms, and the increased spread of infectious diseases.

66% of the nation’s sulfur dioxide (SO2). When sulfur dioxide is combined with rain water it creates acid rain, which damages the foliage of forests, crops, and other plants, and eventually can kill the plants. It also acidifies rivers and lakes causing them to be biologically “dead.”

ABOUT GREEN POWER

Green-e Energy is the nation’s leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy. This voluntary consumer-protection program verifies superior, certified renewable energy options offered by utilities and marketers in the retail market. Renewable resources of energy include wind power, solar photovoltaic and solar thermal power, certain types of hydropower, geothermal, waste biomass fuels used to generate electricity, and ocean thermal, wave and tidal power. Green power sources produce electricity with an environmental profile superior to conventional power technologies and produce no anthropogenic (human caused) greenhouse gas emissions.

Shaklee purchased 8 million kilowatt-hours of Green-e certified renewable energy in the form of national wind power to offset 100% of Shaklee’s greenhouse gas emissions from purchased electricity.

In 2009, the US Environmental Protection Agency honored Shaklee with a Green Power Leadership Award in recognition of the company’s commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation’s voluntary green power market.

A Million Trees.

A Million Dreams.™

A Million Healthier Lives.

“ When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and the seeds of hope. We also secure the future of our children. ”

Dr. Wangari Maathai

At Shaklee, we’re part of a movement to make people and the planet healthier. Inspired by the visionary works of 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai and her Green Belt Movement, Shaklee began a tree-planting campaign across the United States and Canada on Earth Day 2006, encouraging the company’s 750,000 Members and Distributors to organize tree-planting events at the grassroots level in their respective communities.
