Safari Books Online LLC was formed when O’Reilly Media and The Pearson Technology Group, two companies in the education and technology industry, joined forces in 2001. The joint venture was about creating a digital library that would contain and make available to users on a subscription basis the best technology books from leading authors and publishers. These materials coming from O’Reilly, Sams, Wiley, Addison Wesley, and Prentice Hall, among others will be streamed directly to the subscribers’ computers or mobile devices as e-books or other readable digital formats.

A Most Comprehensive Content

Safari Books Online has materials from the leading technology book publishers such as O’Reilly, Addison-Wesley, Prentice Hall, John Wiley & Sons, Adobe Press, Sams, Apress, Wrox, Microsoft Press, Cisco Press, Manning Publications, Packt, QUE, Oracle Press, and Syngress, among others. The categories of books include desktop and web applications, digital media, engineering, IT and software development, business, and professional development. Users can also select books by product such as AutoCAD or by vendor such as Autodesk. Aside from completed works, this comprehensive digital library also offers Rough Cuts, which are developed manuscripts but not yet published. It gives users an opportunity to interact with the author and provide feedback before the work is published.



Aside from books, Safari digital library has thousands of video courses from InfiniteSkills, Cisco, O’Reilly, Packt, Peachpit, Train Simple and many others. Safari Books Online offers two products, Bookshelf and Flow. With Bookshelf, users are allowed to choose up to ten books, courses and conference videos each month. The site allows for a 10-day free trial period, and should users wish to continue their subscription, they will be billed $19.99 per month. After six months, the cost will increase to $27.99 per month. The other product is Safari Flow which is priced at $29 per month. It provides unlimited web and mobile access to the thousands of digital content about technology, business, design, management, analytics and more. No credit card is required during the trial period, and users who have subscribed can cancel anytime.

Tools for Teams

The Safari digital library has special offers for teams. For instance, team accounts for Flow is now available but details are available only upon requests. Another way for customized team learning is the Safari Tutorials. It is a customized training for companies that are in need of skill- and knowledge-building courses for its staff and managers. With specific learning goals, subject matter experts and a comprehensive library of books and videos, people are given short, targeted lessons that are customized for them and which they can access from any device at their own schedule.
