As citizens learn more about the downsides of hydraulic fracking the inevitable protests follow. In Pennslylvannia, Nova Scotia, Quebec and now the state of New York the politicians are stepping back.
This is not an easy response but New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says that they are backing off because the threat to water, the risk of triggering earthquakes, air pollution and the ‘we’re not backing down’ groundswell of opposition. This concern and opposition creates an environment where it is no longer politically viable to be advancing this dangerous practice.
They are also backing off because it is a dead end and the ambitious Mr. Cuomo did not become Governor of New York by misreading the mood of the voters.
