Ugh, silly season. It’s all fun and games popping bottles on a Tuesday night, until 7am rolls around and you don’t have the luxury of throwing your phone against the wall and going back to sleep for 70 years.

Yep, it’s a lifestyle of work-day hangovers – so how exactly do you fake being bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, when really you’re dying inside and want to bury yourself face-first in a breakfast burrito?
Break out the illuminator
Hourglass @ Mecca Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light, $67
This is not the time to be shy with the glow. We’ve gone on at length about how great illuminating primer is for faking awake-ness, so that’s a good starting point (after at least rinsing your face, of course). You’ll be amazed by how *zing* you look just by adding one of these before your foundation. Also, get some illuminating powder – one that isn’t too sparkly, just gives a nice gentle sheen – and dust it all over your face, not just the high points. Stick to a light dusting, don’t get heavy handed!
Curl your lashes
Kit Cosmetics @ Mecca Power Curl Eyelash Curler, $25
The idea of using a lash curling contraption when you can barely keep your eyes open seems like a recipe for disaster – but trust us when we say if you do this one step, your makeup look will go from a 6 to a 9/10, AND you get the added bonus of looking way happier to be in this world thank you actually are. Just clamp lashes gently at the roots, then release after a few seconds and go in as normal with your mascara.
Don’t use eyeliner
CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara, $19.95
Firstly, because you won’t manage it in a neat fashion, let’s be honest. Secondly, because you’ve probably got some smudged old mascara/liner on your lashes anyway, which is adding a bit of definition. And thirdly, because lashes with a simple swipe of mascara and nothing else are the freshest look anyone can muster, so naturally they’re your go-to. Just neaten up whatever smudginess is still there, add extra mascara and get to it.
Use blush
Revlon Blush Highlight Palette in Rose Glow, $26.95
Most hangovers come complete with a deathly pale face, so this isn’t the time to skimp on bronzer and blush. Don’t go overboard, but adding some bronzer to the hollows of your cheeks, and a little blush on the apples will brighten up your complexion quick-smart.
When in doubt, go for a bright lip
Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in Rouge Buzz, $19
Again, like our skin, when we’re hungover our lips tend to, well, disappear into our face. Basically, the colour seems to drain from them so going lipstick-free won’t make you seem ok with life. You can try a nude, but for real wow/fresh factor, try a hot pink or orange-based red lip.
