You’ve got the dress, the flowers, even the specific type of flower petals you want thrown around you when exiting the church. But you’re stuck on one thing – what fragrance are you going to wear? For most brides it’s the hardest element to decide – especially if you’re into that whole tie-in of scent and memory, how a certain smell can evoke a time and place.

We chatted to 16 gals to find out what perfume they wore for their wedding, and their reasons for choosing it. Some were sentimental, others practical. If you’re looking for your own bridal inspiration, or just in the market for a new romantic fragrance – look no further.

“Both my mother and I have always loved the scent of roses, and this particular fragrance was first given to me by my mother as a gift many years earlier. She’d pretended she needed a new fragrance herself and asked me to select one. After I chose Chloé for her, she secretly wrapped it up and gave it to me as a gift. After that, I wore it every single day so to me it made sense that it would be the fragrance to wear on my wedding day”

“I remember smelling this and thinking I’d never owned anything quite like it, so it was an obvious choice when my wedding day rolled around last year. It’s fresh and romantic without being too over-powering or show stealing. And to be perfectly honest, I loved the bottle and knew it’d photograph well – that’s equally as important, right?”

Wore: Dior J’Adore

“This is my favourite scent of all time! We got married on a perfect day in November and the smell of this classic is perfect – summery, soft and romantic. Plus I wanted to remind my husband it was me under all the makeup and poofy dress.”

Wore: Chloe Love, Chloe

“I wore Love, Chloe – my husband had given it to me a few months before. Chloe fragrances hold special memories for me, I still remember the original Chloe bottle my mum had when I was growing up. I now only wear Love, Chloe on special occasions.”

“Because I was getting married in Byron Bay, I wanted something light and floral, but that would still linger. And just to make matters even more complicated, I wanted something that I hadn’t worn before so it was unique to this very special moment in my life! I came across this Carven fragrance by accident, and immediately fell in love with the freshness of the scent. It’s a beautiful mixture of bohemian jasmine, ylang ylang and mandarin blossom, combined with earthy sandalwood. It was a classic, with a whimsical twist – which suited my day perfectly.”

“I was considering purchasing something new for my big day, and I asked my husband what he thought. His choice was my go-to perfume, Marc Jacobs Daisy. He said it was the one scent that reminded him the most of me. I thought that was sweet – he just wanted me to be me on our wedding day.”

“The vanilla in this scent was what attracted me to it – I loved it’s warmth, but it wasn’t as overpowering as other vanilla-based scents I’d tried. I wanted something subtle and this was it.”

“My bridesmaids gave me this as a wedding gift, and I fell in love with it so decided to make it my wedding fragrance. I mean, who doesn’t love Chanel?”

“Being a beauty editor, I (obviously) considered my wedding scent one of the most important decisions to make before my big day. I tried and tested my way through new releases and classic fragrances before landing on this gorgeous Givenchy white floral. The packaging was almost as important as the scent inside, and the luxe gold and white combination was a winner for me. I wanted something that got my new husband’s attention- the sweet and sexy top notes of mirabelle and jasmine- but had staying power- the woody base of sandalwood and vetiver.”

“This fragrance was and still is my absolute favourite. I chose it because it’s really soft and floral, I always recieved compliments when I wore it before my wedding so it seemed perfect for the day. It was also actually a gift from my mother-in-law so I scored some brownie points in the process!”

Wore: Jean Paul Gaultier Classique

“My mum used to wear Classique when I was young, and it was my first fragrance as a teenager. I’ve always worn the same perfume, and didn’t want it to be any different on my wedding day. Anything else wouldn’t have felt right to me.”

Wore: Diptyque Eau Duelle

“I bought this in Paris at the Diptyque boutique during a solo trip, and wore it on the plane home knowing my fiancee Tim would be meeting me at the airport… and that was a really special moment for us! I love it, and I still love it 3 years on now because I have my wedding memories attached to the fragrance as well as that reunion, but also because as a fragrance alone it’s a little bit alternative to mainstream perfume. From the first time I wore it, it made me feel like a woman, not a girl!”
