Did I ever even announce I was going to make over my master bedroom? Tap tap, is this thing on? As I mentioned last week the time I have lately to write has been limited by summer activities with the kiddos and working hard on some Sweet Clover marketing strategies. In my head, I filled you all in on plans for my master bedroom makeover; but in reality, well, I don’t think I quite did. If you can read my mind, then yay! You knew it was coming! And if you can’t, surprise! We are giving our bedroom a little spiffying up with a little help from Ace hardware!
I am sure this is going to shock and upset some, but if you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know I like to make dramatic changes with paint. And you also know that most wall paint colors in my house have a two-three year shelf life, and this bedroom would have reached its third in August. I can’t have that! Before I get into the plans and the progress, here’s a little reminder of what this space looked like.
I’ve loved the moody blue walls, but I was ready for a change. I also still love so much of this space, so most of it is staying. I am keeping the bedding, bench, nightstands, dressers, lamps, rug, and a bit more. I am also keeping the layout of the space as it is what works best for us.
What’s going? The gallery wall is leaving, the headboard is being put away for Sawyer (when he’s ready to ditch the twin beds), and the map is coming down.
What’s coming? New paint, new “headboard”, green accents, a vanity nook, new wall treatment, a vintage folding screen headboard (found at Sweet Clover), and new art. We may possibly get new flooring as well. I am not one for woe is me so I haven’t even told you that our basement flooded last week, and our playroom is a disaster area with most of the carpeting ripped out. I know that many flooring places will offer deals when you do more than one room, so we are hoping that we can score a deal and bring some new flooring into our bedroom, too! Silver lining, right?
Now let’s check out what my plan involves. (And you can check out my pinterest board here to see much more of what is inspiring me). It started when I came across this image from Coastal Living….
I love everything about it- the color palette, the white walls, the wood tones, and the beachy global vibe it has going on. I don’t even mind that the woman is stepping on a white couch. The navy and turquoise and wood tones were already existing in my space, so bringing in some green and lightening it up would help me achieve the look I wanted.
With the gallery wall leaving, and the walls going to white, I wanted to bring in something new on that wall so it wouldn’t be a big white void with a tv in front of it. I decided on adding a planked wall for a coastal feel, and I want to add photos of my own children at the beach or a very large beach photo print of my own. We have a TV that sits on this wall, so I will either use a few large photos around the TV, or one huge framed photo with the TV floating in front of it a bit. (All to be decided after we go to the beach). This image from Karen Rosenlund is helping to inspire me there…
And finally with bringing in the green, I turned to my friend Hollie who owns the shop Stuck on Hue for the perfect punch of green in the pillow! She has an amazing selection, and I’ll be sharing more on her awesome shop and pillow selection later; but for now, I’ve got one fabulous punch of green going on on my bed! I also plan to bring in green in the way of plant life. That I hope will not lead to plant death. But seriously, a little green plant life can go a long way in a space. And now let’s get to the really fun part…. PROGRESS!
Choosing a white paint can be tricky… I love the Clark & Kensington Opal White we have in our dining room, but I wanted something a tad brighter in this space. I pulled out my Clark & Kensington fan deck from Ace Hardware, and brought it up to my bedroom. This room sits in the front of the house, like the dining room, and gets a similar amount of light. It made sense to select the color that was just a shade brighter on the same card as Opal White, so after I checked it out, that’s what I did! I headed to my local Ace hardware (I go to the one in Thurmont, MD, and just love the folks there) and had two gallons of “Illumination” mixed in Clark & Kensington’s eggshell premium interior paint & primer in one. I also armed myself with a new angled Purdy paint brush for all of the cutting in. (These are the brushes I use for everything!)
Thursday evening, Sawyer & Emmy headed to my parents house for a long weekend, and by Friday morning I was ready to get started. I had made a deal with Chris- I would do all the cutting in and spackling if he would do all of the rolling. I detest rolling paint, so was thrilled he took me up on it. He also detests cutting in, so it was a fair trade (and frankly, he is TERRIBLE at it, but he has much more upper body strength so he’s a better paint roller). I also detest taping a space, so I count on my angled Purdy brush and steady hand to follow the edges smoothly. I applied 3 coats of paint to all of the edges Friday. I also removed all of the art from our gallery wall and filled all of those holes with Ace’s lightweight spackling. Once that was dry, I lightly sanded it with 200 grit paper to smooth out the walls. Saturday and Sunday Chris got to work, rolling on 3 coats total of Illumination. Two coats was almost enough but there were a couple of spots that looked like they needed more, so we decided it was for the best. I mean, after all we were painting white over navy! When he was all done Sunday he left to pick up the kiddos, and I put the room back in order, moving all of the furniture and rehanging the curtains so that we could once again sleep there.
So while I still have much more to do, here are a couple of peeks of where we are at now!
I am really excited about how this space is feeling. And even though I have only added this one little touch of green in the pillow from Stuck on Hue. Hollie has so many gorgeous greens that it was hard to choose one. I just wanted them all. I ended up choosing the Robert Allen Strie Ikat in Malachite.
The green pillow has really drawn out the green in the lamps, too!
I recently purchased this glass head from a vendor at Sweet Clover as well…. It’s perfect for holding one of my favorite hats. And of course I hung the painting of me and Chris back up- I just love it so much!
And finally, I will leave you with this wall…. the great white expanse for now.
So picture that wall as planked and the same white as the other walls…. The TV is actually going to be upgraded (but ssshhh don’t tell Chris because that’s going to be his birthday gift!). Would you hand a few large pieces of beach art around it in black, wood, or white frames, or would you hand one huge piece over the dresser with the focal point to the right (unhidden by a TV)? Or I am thinking since the TV will be bigger I could move it all the way to the right on the dresser, and hang one piece of art vertically, and not behind the TV at all. But I would love to hear your thoughts!
For now I need to get my nail gun warmed up, because I am ready to plank that wall!
