Washington (DC): Moonlight, an American film about a young black man directed by Berry Jenkins, nabs the best picture award at Oscar 2017 event, after a little confusion created by incorrectly announcing ‘La La Land’ for best picture category. Emma Stone won the best actress award for La La Land, and the best actor award went to Casey Affleck for the movie Manchester by the Sea.

The film Moonlight has won the award competing with best film nominees: La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Lion, Hidden Figures, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, and Arrival. The actor Mahershala Ali won the best male supporting role for his character in Moonlight, and Viola Davis won the best female supporting role for her character in film Fences.

The movie La La Land has, however, swept in other categories –- production design, music, cinematography, best director by Damien Chazelle, lyrics, and best actress.

The nominees for best actor category were Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea, Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge, Ryan Gosling for La La Land, Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic, and Denzel Washington for Fences.

In the women section, the best nominees were Isabelle

Huppert for Elle, Ruth Negga for Loving, Natalie Portman for Jackie, Emma Stone for La La Land, and Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins.

The event proceeded with jesting and joking about Donald Trump’s tweeting and falling candies for refreshments. The winners in some other categories are as following:

Script: Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester by the sea

Documentary Film: O.J.: Made in America

Animated Feature Film: Zootopia

Foreign Language Film: The Salesman

Visual Effect: Jungle Book

Original Song: City of Stars

Original Screenplay: Manchester by the Sea
