Dhaka: President Abdul Hamid on Sunday underscored the need for ensuring the quality of education at all higher levels so that no one can raise questions about its standard.

“Nowadays questions have been raised against some private universities with regards to their fulfilling the expected standard. We have to ensure that no one can raise questions over the standard of higher studies at every level,” he said.

The President said this while addressing the ‘University Grants Commission (UGC) Awards’ ceremony held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.

Sixteen teachers of different universities received awards for the year 2012 and 2013 as recognition for their fundamental and innovative research.

Abdul Hamid said “We have to keep in mind that an education institution is no way a business establishment…those who want to make business by turning education into a commodity should rather invest in any other sector that will benefit the country and the nation.”

Mentioning that it’s a big challenge to ensure the quality of higher education and its gradual development while at the same time increasing the number of institutions and students, the President said time has come to ponder which type of plan has to be followed to face the challenge. “I hope UGC would come forward in this regard with a specific work-plan.”

Pointing at teachers and researchers, he said that they play a big role in preserving quality of education and its development.

“I hope you will always unveil newer horizons of knowledge awakened by the responsibility to the country. A teacher is an idol to a student. For this reason, I am requesting you to play a more cordial and meaningful role through acquiring and distributing knowledge,” he added.
