We don’t know about you but as excited as we are about Mona’s ghostly presence, major Ali drama, and designer couture, there other things about the Pretty Little Liars Christmas episode that have piqued our interest. Such as? Well, for starters, all the vibrant beauty looks the lead actresses — including Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Sasha Pieterse, and Shay Mitchell — are seen rocking. From luscious berry lip colors to eyeshadows that shimmer in the twinkling lights, the palettes are different enough to match each character’s unique style, but also glitzy enough for a holiday soiree. Basically, we can’t get enough of their downright gorgeous glamor!
So who’s responsible for all those flawless liner applications and instances of enviable, glowing skin? None other than Cynthia “Cindy” Miguens, who’s the show’s head makeup artist and has worked on other fan favorite television series such as The OC, Chuck, and Faking It! We caught up with the beauty expert to find out what inspired each distinct Ice Ball palette, and to get her to spill some of her well-guarded secrets on looking fresh and fierce throughout the bitter winter months. Alloy Entertainment: Just as with their dresses, the Ice Ball makeup on each of the girls is so lovely and different. Can you tell us your inspiration for each of the following characters? Spencer, Aria, Emily, Hanna, Alison.
Cindy Miguens: I did a lot of research on Ice Ball masquerade parties and fashion shows. I got inspired from the our set design and wardrobe for this particular episode. I knew our principals were not in masquerade masks or makeup, and were wearing white, cream, and taupe gorgeous gowns. I decided to accent their makeup by making them all look like they just step out of a Alexander McQueen fashion runway. For Spencer, I wanted to use a dark wine lip on her. We used Cinema Secret Grape and Mac Sultana, with a nude eye. I got Aria inspiration from Christmas. I wanted a smoking green eye ( Dior 096 pied de Poule) on her lid, with a berry lip. Emily’s inspiration came from Bond girls sexy looks, with a smokey dark bronze eye and nude lip (Jouer Monique). Hanna’s inspiration came from runway models. I gave her a nude shimmer eye, with a bright pink lip ( MAC Fearless stick). Alison, the Belle of the Ball, of course had to stand out from the rest, so I gave her a sky blue mod eye which was hard to find the perfect blue. I used the Inglot eyeliner gel 88, on her lid and the nudest lip of them all on her lip.

Alloy Entertainment: We interviewed Mandi Line as well and she was smitten with Spencer’s dark lip. Do you collaborate with the hair and wardrobe departments before planning the looks? If so, what’s the process like?
Cindy Miguens: Yes, mainly with Mandi Line. She’s amazing and gives us boards with the pictures of the girls in their gowns so that we know exactly what they are wearing. This definitely inspires us with their makeup looks! On this episode, I was also inspired by our talented production designer, Fred Andrews, who created the Ice Ball sets. And of course, Marlene King, the creator of the show, directed this episode and wrote it with her assistant, Kyle Bown. Marlene is the inspiration of all inspiration. She allows you to create and inspires creativity.
Alloy Entertainment: Just like their hair and fashion, the girls beauty looks are always changing. Is anyone undergoing a makeover in PLL Season 5b?
Cindy Miguens: PLL Season 5b has several makeovers…From natural to dark beauty! You have to tune in and watch. It’s filled with lots of changes!
Alloy Entertainment: It’s officially winter in Rosewood! Any skin care tips to help prevent dryness?
Cindy Miguens: My skin care tip to avoid winter dryness is drink lots of water. It’s so important to hydrate the your skin by drinking water, because it will prevent dryness, as well as break outs, it helps restore elasticity and firmness. Another important tip is to wash and moisturize your skin. I’ve been using the Coral Actives cleanser and moisturizer. Its been helping me with my dryness and preventing my skin from breaking out, during this winter season.
Alloy Entertainment: What’s a secret beauty trick that seemed questionable at first but pleasantly surprised you?
Cindy Miguens: BB creams seemed questionable. I didn’t understand how it could replace serum, moisturizers, primers, foundations and sunblock. It seemed like such a gimmick, but now I’m in love.
Alloy Entertainment: What are some of your go-to products for helping makeup look flawless throughout the day?
Cindy Miguens: These are my go-to products:
-Primers. Eyes and face. Helps makeup last all day and locks it in eyeshadows. ( Amazing Cosmetics, Benefit, TARTE)
-Concealers. Every actor has a Dermacolor palette in their makeup bag. It covers all skin imperfections to covering tattoos.
-Powders- Helps set the makeup (Te L’Clerc, Chanel, Jouer, Amazing Cosmetics)
-Setting sprays. Keeps makeup looking fresh for hours ( Urban Decay, MAC).
Alloy Entertainment:What three beauty rules do you personally abide by?
Cindy Miguens: I drink lots of water, wash my face before bed, and use good skin care that fits my needs.
Alloy Entertainment: The holidays are coming up and it’s all about being bold and festive! Are there any fun beauty trends viewers could easily recreate at home?
Cindy Miguens: Fun beauty trends for this holiday season, would be to wear light gold eyeshadow on your eye lids, an eye liner that accents your eyes in the water line, with a bold bright lip. Try something new and easy you can create. Less is best!
Alloy Entertainment: And many PLL fans have expressed interest in becoming makeup artists. How did you start your career and what’s your best piece of advice for someone who doesn’t know how to get started?
Cindy Miguens: I started my career, by getting an education in Cosmetology, and then going to a specialized Makeup School. My advice to someone who wants to do makeup for TV, is to get an education. I needed to know what I was doing before I applied myself as a makeup artist. It gave me the confidence to try!
Alloy Entertainment:So far the Rosewood girls have attended dances, masquerade balls, Halloween parties and more. What’s one event, as a makeup artist, that you secretly wish for just so you can bring the drama in terms of beauty?
Cindy Miguens: I would love to turn our Pretty Little Liars into dolls — maybe in an “A” dream sequence.
“Whoa!” to her last response. Seeing the Liars all dolled up — literally — would be incredible and oh-so-creepy. Let’s hope the showrunners consider this for future episodes!
