Strolling of the Heifers, King Arthur Flour, and Red Star Yeast are sponsoring the national contest and entries will be accepted until May 18, 2016

Brattleboro, Vermont (PRWEB) March 15, 2016

Strolling of the Heifers, a Vermont farm and food advocacy non-profit organization, along with King Arthur Flour and Red Star® Yeast, announces the national “Great American Bread Recipe Contest.” Entries will be accepted starting March 15, 2016 through May 18, 2016.

Amateur bakers of all ages can submit one original recipe for a yeasted bread that includes King Arthur Flour and Red Star® Yeast online at strollingoftheheifers.com/contest or by mail (Strolling of the Heifers, 105 Partridge Rd., E. Dummerston, VT 05346). The website includes detailed rules and additional information.

Judges will evaluate how easily and consistently the recipe can be replicated by others; they will also take into consideration flavor, texture, appearance, shape, and originality. Up to 15 finalists will be selected. Winners do not have to provide actual loaves of bread and do not have to be present to win.

The Grand Prize winner will receive $1,000 cash, a $250 gift certificate to the King Arthur Flour Catalogue, plus a year’s supply of both Red Star® Yeast and King Arthur Flour. There are additional prizes for a Runner-Up, the People’s Choice Award, and a People’s Choice Runner-Up. All of these prizes are donated by King Arthur Flour and Red Star® Yeast.

Strolling of the Heifers began in 2002 as a weekend celebrating farmers and local food, and has grown into a year-round cycle of programs and events connecting the public with farmers and food producers and encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in the farm and food sectors.

The organization’s centerpiece is the world-famous Strolling of the Heifers Parade, in which scores of well-groomed, flower-bedecked heifer calves are led up Brattleboro, Vermont’s historic Main Street by 4H Club members and other young aspiring farmers. Now in its second decade, the festival and parade, taking place this year June 3-5, 2016, has opened its culinary competition to a national audience.

“Strolling of the Heifers started as a small-town parade and then grew into a regional movement focused on sustainable agriculture, food systems, and economic sustainability,” says Orly Munzing, Strolling of the Heifers Founder and Executive Director. “Now we’re taking our movement national by announcing this recipe contest. We want to know who will ‘rise’ to the challenge.”

The “Great American Bread Recipe Contest” is sponsored by the most trusted brands in baking. King Arthur Flour is America’s oldest flour company and has been operating since 1790 as the premier baking resource for amateur and professional bakers. Committed to delivering baking success through innovative and consistent quality products, the Red Star® brand has been a tradition in family baking and preferred among baking professionals baking since 1882.

“It is our mission to inspire and educate bakers everywhere and with the Great American Bread Recipe Contest, the next generation of bread bakers can showcase their knowledge and creativity,” says Katie Walker, King Arthur Flour Spokesperson. “Strolling of the Heifers has been taking place in King Arthur Flour’s own backyard for the last 14 years and we’re excited to help take this local food movement beyond Vermont to bakers across the United States.”

“Is there anything better than the aroma of fresh baking bread in your kitchen? Red Star Yeast is thrilled to be a co-sponsor of the 2016 Strolling of the Heifers Great American Bread Recipe Contest. We encourage anyone who enjoys baking yeast breads to fire up their ovens and consider entering a recipe.” Kelly Olson, Consumer Relations Manager, Red Star Yeast.
