Imagine No Malaria’s 2014 World Malaria Day campaign has been selected to receive the Care2 Innovator Award, an honor given to nonprofit causes that make a difference. The award was presented today at the Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC15) in Austin, Texas. The Rev. Bobbi Kaye Jones, senior pastor of Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin, was on hand for the presentation; she is a member of the Executive Committee for Imagine No Malaria.

Imagine No Malaria was one of five finalists selected by Care2, a social network for people wanting to effect change. Judging was based on innovation, influence, “impact delta” (measurement of campaign’s before and after), and advancing the cause.

United Methodist Communications, an agency of The United Methodist Church, created the #CovertheNet campaign for World Malaria Day to increase awareness of Imagine No Malaria. The campaign reached more than 1.5 million people. The campaign ran from April 12-26, 2014, targeting churches and individuals with a primary emphasis on social media. For churches, the campaign provided a turnkey kit for participation during Lent that extended to World Malaria Day. For individuals, the campaign asked people to show support through social media engagement by using #CovertheNet, with an emphasis on engagement on World Malaria Day, April 25, 2014.

Campaign participants had the opportunity to change their Facebook cover image to an Imagine No Malaria photo and re-share videos and posts from the Imagine No Malaria Facebook page; add a special World Malaria Day Twibbon to Twitter and/or Facebook; join Thunderclap to receive a timed Facebook post or tweet from Imagine No Malaria supporters that created a giant wave of attention; and post a prayer on the Imagine No Malaria Facebook wall for those at risk of death from malaria.

Imagine No Malaria, an initiative from The United Methodist Church, is committed to ending death and suffering from malaria through prevention, communication, education and treatment. To date, INM has raised 86 percent of its goal with more than $65 million in gifts and pledges. United Methodists across the world are working hard to reach and celebrate the initiative’s $75 million goal before the denomination’s General Conference in 2016.

Safe, secure and easy giving opportunities are available on the site so that anyone can participate and join the effort to eliminate this disease. Visitors can make one-time gifts and pledges of any amount, but many individuals participate with a recurring pledge of $28 per month over three years, to potentially save the lives of up to 100 children at risk for contracting the deadly disease.

Additionally, visitors can get a glimpse at the lives Imagine No Malaria is changing through video diaries, touching photos and new stories.
