Student Program Expands co-production partnerships with Miami arts presenters

Culture Shock Miami, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs program to promote and increase attendance by students at arts and cultural institutions, enters its second decade with expanded programming, activities, and co-productions in the performing and visual arts. For its 2015-16 season, Culture Shock Miami is co-presenting performances with African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, Miami-Dade County Auditorium, and South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.
In addition, Culture Shock Miami is independently presenting Blaze, The International Dance Spectacular, at South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, on February 6, 2016 at 8 PM.
Through its website, CultureShockMiami.com, the program enables young adults, ages 13 to 22 year old, to attend live performances at just $5 per ticket, performed by top music, theater, dance, and performing arts presenters and to visit major museums and cultural destinations at $2.50 per admission pass. All tickets and passes are sold through CultureShockMiami.com, which are often for the best available seats and may be purchased free of any taxes, fees, or surcharges. A student must use the first ticket purchased, but the second ticket can be used by a person of any age.
According to Michael Spring, Senior Advisor to the Office of the Mayor of Miami-Dade County and Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs, “We are proud of the 10-year achievements of the Culture Shock Miami program which has reduced ticket costs and lowered a significant barrier in attending arts events for our high school and college students. This allows them to attend performances of the finest artists from around the world more frequently and helps them mature into the next generation of cultural audiences.”
More than 60,000 tickets have been sold through CultureShockMiami.com, which have been donated by the more than 90 institutions throughout Miami-Dade County that participate in the program, including the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, Cleveland Orchestra Miami, Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Florida Grand Opera, GableStage, Miami City Ballet, Miami-Dade County Auditorium, Miami Symphony Orchestra, Perez Art Museum of Miami-Dade, South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, and ZooMiami.
Throughout the season, new blocks of tickets from shows and venues all over Miami-Dade will be added to the CultureShockMiami.com website. Ticket buyers are encouraged to check regularly to see what becomes available.

Over the past two seasons, Culture Shock Miami has presented original programs of special interest to middle, high school, and college students, including Street Beat, Rhythmic Circus, Intergalactic Nemesis, The StepCrew, and Ballet Memphis.
This season, on February 6, 2016 at 8 PM at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center in Cutler Bay, Culture Shock Miami Presents Blaze, a high-energy theatrical dance performance featuring 80 minutes of non-stop dance from some of the world’s hottest DJs, B-Boys and street dancers, to the music of Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, David Guetta, and Snoop Dogg.
Christina Tassy-Beauvoir, Miami-Dade County Project Administrator who manages the Culture Shock Miami program said, “The successes of our past two years in producing and co-producing performances with our arts partners, such as South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, have helped us increase arts attendance among our youth as we better target their interests. The enthusiasm, interest, and participation in Culture Shock Miami has become our mandate to expand this work. We are very excited to add the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center and Miami-Dade County Auditorium as presentation partners.”
Many of the performances and artists of Culture Shock Miami’s co-presentations include educational and outreach components to help give greater appreciation to students for the creative process. Working with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system, Culture Shock Miami will offer free in-school performances, workshops, outreach events, and master classes for students and adults. Elizabeth Streb is on a quest to present her newest action events with a clear theatrical trajectory. If action were drama, what is its true story? What makes action tick? Bowling balls fall, a floor rapidly turns to create turbulence, a 25 foot square wall is occupied by counter weighted performers and the Whizzing Gizmo invented by Noe and Ivan Espana intermittently ejects bodies.
The artists and collaborators involved in the creation of Forces, all recognized as being at the forefront of their fields, are joined by their passion to rethink the interface between people, technology, and society.

The Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation Presents Piano Slam 8, a program at the Adrienne Arsht Center that features award-winning students of middle schools and high schools within the Miami Dade Public School System in an evening of music and original poetry.
PIANO SLAM 8, is the annual music, poetry, dance spectacular showcasing one of Dranoff’s award-winning professional duo pianist teams with DJs, some of Miami-Dade’s most gifted young public high school student-poets. These students, having won top prizes at county-wide poetry competition based on the music in their lives, will perform with international musicians and Miami’s hottest Spoken Word artists and dancers in multi-arts extravaganza. There is no cost for tickets but concert attendees will not be admitted without one.
