Catapult Academy of Duval County held its inaugural College & Career Signing Day Celebration on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 26 and 27, 2016. In partnership with Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ), the two-day event celebrated the members of Catapult Academy’s Class of 2016 who will attend FSCJ as well as those seniors who have been accepted to and will be attending other colleges, universities, and career programs or who will be entering the military.
Over 50 students attended the Signing Days, which were held at two Catapult Academy campuses in Jacksonville. As part of the days’ events, Catapult Academy students and staff wore t-shirts from college or career programs they will attend or have attended. For students who had not yet applied to school, FSCJ admissions and financial aid staff advised and assisted students in completing their applications.
Signing Day is a chance to celebrate students for making a commitment to higher education. This annual event is part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative, an effort to inspire every student to complete their education past high school, whether at a professional training program, a community college, or a four-year college. For Catapult Academy seniors, many of whom dropped out of high school before enrolling in the dropout recovery program, participation in the College & Career Signing Day Celebration signified their success in overcoming many real-life challenges to earn their high school diplomas and build a better future for their families and themselves.
"We applaud the amazing accomplishment of these young men and women,” said Andrew Post, Superintendent of Schools for Catapult Academy. “Earning a high school diploma and being accepted to college are often understated and undervalued, but for our students, this achievement opens doors of opportunity that had seemed unattainable. We are excited for the many successes that await them in college, career, and life."
The collaboration between Catapult Academy and FSCJ reflects the two schools’ ongoing partnership, which provides Catapult Academy graduates the chance to attend a college that is educationally and professionally supportive, with smaller class sizes, on-campus professional mentors, and a steep history of community involvement and development. A significant majority of 100+ 2016 graduates from Catapult Academy’s seven locations in Jacksonville will attend FSCJ.
“There is nothing more important to a student’s future than securing their education and career or workforce training,” said Terry Hollingshead, FSCJ Associate Director of Enrollment Management. “Through our partnership with Catapult, we are able to ensure these students are taking the necessary steps to fulfill their academic and career goals that will allow them to succeed in the future.”
College & Career Signing Days are also scheduled for Catapult Academy seniors in Hillsborough and Marion Counties during early May 2016.
