With six of their clients recently called, the Cleveland Ohio law firm of Bilfield & Associates (bilfieldtaxrelief.com) warns all taxpayers of a surge in IRS phone scams, in which scam artists are impersonating IRS Revenue Officers and demanding immediate payment of taxes, with the threat of arrest.

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) March 18, 2015

In the last thirty days, six clients of the Cleveland, Ohio law firm of Bilfield & Associates were called by scammers impersonating IRS employees. This law firm is warning all taxpayers and suggests that those who are unsure if they are being scammed to call their office for help. ‘If you are getting a call from someone saying they are from the IRS and especially if they are threatening you with arrest if you do not make an immediate telephone payment, hang up the phone: you are being scammed. IRS does not operate in that manner. If you are not sure what to do, call us and we can help you figure it out,” said Attorney Murray Bilfield, founder of the Bilfield & Associates law firm. “The scammers now are becoming more sophisticated than ever. Last year, we had a total of two clients called and just in the last month or so, we had six clients called. It is getting worse.”

The Internal Revenue Service announced on January 22, 2015, “Aggressive and threatening phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents remain near the top of the annual Dirty Dozen list of tax scams for the 2015 filing season. . . Scammers are able to alter caller ID numbers to make it look like the IRS is calling.”

It is quite understandable that even very educated taxpayers can fall prey to such threats, as the mere mention of those three well-known letters, “IRS,” cause fear and panic, particularly if the taxpayer has not filed returns or owes taxes, for a number of years. Attorney Bilfield points out that the IRS is the most powerful collection company in the world. Attorney Bilfied says, “The IRS is not required to go to court before it can levy a bank account, issue a garnishment on a paycheck, seize a home, personal property or business assets."

Just as taxpayers are potentially subject to these current IRS phone scams, every taxpayer who works and has income reported to IRS is potentially subject to IRS collection enforcement actions. However, “If you are in trouble with the IRS, it is never too late to fix your tax problems. Individuals who owe IRS taxes get into their situation for different reasons. But, ignoring or waiting to address your IRS problems after IRS takes enforcement and collection action, only compounds the consequences, and is the worst thing you can do,” said Attorney Bilfield. “Many people may only miss a year or two of filings, but are afraid to admit it and they hope it just goes away. It will not go away until you take proper steps to fix your tax issues.”
