Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) students and staff celebrated with Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP) on the topping out of their newest 21st century learning environment, Douglass Elementary.

Boulder, Colo (PRWEB) October 23, 2016

Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) students and staff celebrated with Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP) on the topping out of their newest 21st century learning environment, Douglass Elementary. The new, highly sustainable school is located adjacent to the current, 64-year-old facility, built in 1952.

The tradition of topping out a building is a milestone event for the construction of the building, signifying the top-most point of the structure has been reached. The steel beam was signed by all the children of the school and was placed, along with an American flag and the traditional evergreen tree, at the furthest east and top point of the new school.

Strict safety and coordination plans are implemented on the project since the new school is only a few feet from the current facility, requiring a construction entrance to be accessed through where children play for recess. With fence observation windows, children get a first-glance view of the school’s progress.

The school’s final design comes from RTA Architects of Colorado Springs. RTA Architects and AP have collaborated on numerous projects together, including the award-winning Mapleton Early Childhood Education Center in Boulder, which modernized a 124-year-old historical school into a contemporary learning facility for BVSD.

In line with BVSD’s strong commitment to sustainability, the school will follow the District’s Sustainability Management System and the Sustainable Energy Plan. These requirements include new schools and buildings will be designed to meet 2009 LEED for Schools. In addition to this, new buildings will be designed as zero net energy or zero net energy capable, targeting 25Btu/sf. The project is designed to maximize LEED points for Indoor Environmental Quality.

“Innovations such as a solar chimney are being integrated into this school. We are grateful to continue working with Boulder Valley School District as they continue to deliver on their promise of sustainability excellence to the community and students they support,” said Tom Stone, AP Project Executive.

The new school is expected to cost approximately $18.4 million and will be complete in the summer of 2017, ready for the 2017-2018 school year.
