Muncie, IN (PRWEB) September 15, 2015

Model flying continues to grow in popularity as a hobby, an educational tool, and an aviation platform. The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) has welcomed thousands of new members eager to learn more about safe model aircraft operations and the benefits of belonging to the nation’s largest model aviation organization. AMA has also amplified its work with school groups and partners to achieve a milestone of 50,000 Youth members.

AMA offers free memberships to anyone ages 19 and younger. Youth members receive insurance coverage, a monthly e-newsletter, scholarship opportunities, and access to model flying information and education. In 2010, AMA and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) partnered to provide a joint student/Youth membership. This was part of AMA’s goal to build interest in all aviation platforms through EAA Young Eagle Flights and aeromodeling events.

AMA’s education team has built strong partnerships with similar organizations including the Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission, Model Aeronautics Association of Canada, National Aeronautic Association (NAA), Alcoa Foundation, National Coalition for Aviation and Space Education, National Free Flight Society, National Science Teachers Association, and Science Olympiad.

In 2014, AMA was honored with the EAA Young Eagles Horizon Award. AMA received this accolade for its contributions to the overall success of the Young Eagles program.

In 2011, AMA was awarded the NAA’s Frank G. Brewer Trophy for its educational programming and impact on youth, “For exemplary accomplishment and collaborative work with numerous aerospace organizations across the nation to assist students, teachers, and community leaders in understanding the science, skill, and beauty of flight.”

The Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce also recognized AMA’s contributions to education with the 2013 Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Contributions to Education Award. AMA Headquarters is located in Muncie, IN.

AMA continues to expand its outreach to the education community with programs including UAS4STEM, its work with the Alcoa Foundation, continued advances to its online learning center, and by working with AMA’s 2,400 model flying clubs across the nation to provide education through aviation activities at local events.

The Academy of Model Aeronautics, founded in 1936, continues to be devoted to national airspace safety. It serves as the nation’s collective voice for approximately 180,000 modelers in 2,400 clubs in the United States and Puerto Rico. Headquartered in Muncie, Indiana, AMA is a membership organization representing those who fly model aircraft for recreation and educational purposes.
