2016 has been a challenging year to say the least. With a mass of natural disasters, celebrity deaths and controversial political decisions – the national feeling has been somewhat negative. But how has this affected our music choices?
Sunfly Karaoke, the market leaders in Karaoke technology, have released a unique report of the most popular Karaoke tracks of 2016. The report has been compiled from comprehensive analysis of downloads and streaming data from www.sunflykaraoke.com. The results, much like 2016, have been a little emotional.
With slow, emotional songs aplenty it appears that Saturday nights this year have been spent releasing our anxieties – pouring our hearts out over a microphone. Adele’s ‘When We Were Young’ has stolen the top-spot and the list also features equally-melancholy chart-toppers such as Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’, Calum Scott’s ‘Dancing On My Own’ and John Legend’s ‘All of Me’.
Showing things aren’t all doom and gloom, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk’ takes a respectable place at number 10. The likes of Justin Bieber, Little Mix and Elle King also inject a party vibe, revealing that at least some Brits still enjoy having a boogie and a sing-song. James Arthur’s comeback is now complete as he came in with the 7th most popular song - ‘Say You Won't Let Go’.
2016 was of course a very sad year due to the great musicians we lost. Sunfly’s report has also revealed that the popularity of David Bowie, Prince, Pete Burns, Merle Haggard and Bobby Vee has been reflected by an upsurge in the singing of their music. David Bowie karaoke tracks have seen a phenomenal upsurge of 800% and Prince sales are up 586%. Amy Winehouse’s version of ‘Valerie’ also remains very popular.

Dan Maidstone from www.sunflykaraoke.co.uk explains:
“Though there are a number of classics that people associate with being the ‘top karaoke tracks’, trends actually vary enormously year on year especially due to the changing demographics and tech that karaoke is enjoyed by. The days of ‘My Way’ or ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ topping the polls are long over.
With the launch of Sunfly’s sunflykaraoke.us USA download website, our browser-based streaming service and the Karaoke2U mobile app, 2016 has been really exciting for us, and it’s been enlightening to see the different ways that people are engaging with Karaoke technology.
Karaoke is a great activity for the Winter party season, and so we have recently introduced the Sunfly Satellite Touchscreen Laptop Karaoke System, which is hired out for parties and arrives with a portable PA, a couple of wireless mics and gives users access to the entire 16000+ Sunfly Karaoke HD range. Having already been hired by Louis Vuitton for their office Christmas party”
