NY/San Francisco-based production shop Bodega, NY-based editing house Northern Lights and the audio experts at SuperExploder, NY have crafted both affecting and effective films to shed light on essential nonprofits: Brooklyn-based laptop recycling nonprofit Globetops and global nonprofit organization Trickle Up that empowers poverty-stricken individuals to build sustainable livelihoods for a better quality of life.  The work signals Bodega, Northern Lights and SuperExploder’s overarching efforts to utilize their talents and resources to help create compelling content for nonprofits. Past outputs include the inspiring 2012 short documentary “I Want to Say,” created with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, that tells the story of Hacking Autism, a newly adopted Autism Speaks initiative devoted to using technology to give those with autism a voice.

“One Laptop’s Journey” artfully leaps into the expedition of a donated Globetops laptop as it makes its voyage to its new home in Guinea, West Africa.  Globetops is an online community that shares used and redundant laptops with people in need, achieving greater social equality and access to technology.

“Globetops is changing lives,” notes Bodega director Adam Reid. “They engage and inspire at this very pure level. I donated my old MacBook, and the next thing I know, I’m connected with this elementary school principal in Guinea who’s using it to teach her six hundred students. That’s real magic.”

Inspiring change through Trickle Up in “Standing Strong”

To zoom in on the life-changing work that Trickle Up is doing globally, director Mark Littman crafted the inspirational promo “Standing Strong.” The video includes interviews with Burkina Faso Country Representative Alexice, shedding light on the condition of extreme poverty and Trickle Up’s innovative program aimed squarely at eliminating it. Littman and the Bodega, Northern Lights and SuperExploder teams capture these stories in the women’s own voices, speaking from their own experience as they now have the confidence and resources to change their lives and communities.

Globetops founder Becky Morrison teamed up with Bodega, Northern Lights and SuperExploder to visualize the visceral migration that each of these digital devices makes, and the lives they leave forever changed.  In the touching “One Laptop’s Journey,” the donated computer makes its trek from the loving home of a generous New Yorker, to the able hands of the nonprofit’s tech partners through the lengthy voyage across vast skies, expansive oceans, rough roads and dense forests to reach its recipient, whose gratitude radiates through a genuine and exuberant smile. Much of the footage was shot by photographer/cinematographer Jordan Engle, who accompanied Morrison on her recent trip to Guinea, with additional footage shot in the U.S. by Bodega director Adam Reid.

ABOUT GLOBETOPS

Globetops is an online community creating a whole new paradigm. Redefining recycling, the nonprofit adds a spin of creativity to what individuals do with their waste. The platform provides an outlet to connect people who have laptops they no longer use with people from around the world who need one.

Through partnerships with international aid and philanthropic organizations, Globetops seeks to redistribute these tossed resources in an effort to care for the environment and provide a greater access to technology for all.

Globetops enables people to actualize their dreams. By giving technological tools to the poorest sections of society, their strength and confidence grows. They are encouraged to take ownership of their future, assert their rights and create projects that improve the quality of life for their communities.
