Republic Wireless, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that uses major US wireless carrier Sprint’s network, has announced today that it has a certain countrywide GSM carrier partner (yet to be named) that claims to have the fastest 4G LTE network in the nation. Industry watchers are saying that this new carrier partner is likely to be T-Mobile. If this turns out to be true, then it means that Republic Wireless is now in a good position to begin providing its services in rural and suburban areas, especially those locations where T-Mobile is expanding its coverage.
Apart from announcing a new carrier partner, Republic Wireless also revealed that it is planning to add no less than six new Android powered mobile devices to its current lineup of smartphones. Beginning in July of this year, the Wi-Fi-first MVNO will start selling Samsung’s newest flagship devices (the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge), the Galaxy S6, and the Galaxy J3, as well as LG’s Nexus 5X, Motorola’s Moto X Pure Edition, and Huawei’s Nexus 6P.
These new smartphones will all launch with the new carrier partner. According to a spokesperson from Republic Wireless, Sprint is currently finalizing a few details before launch, which makes sense considering that the mobile solution is SIM-based, but those devices should have Sprint service soon.
Before, Republic Wireless only provided mobile service on a couple of low end Motorola devices. The reason for this is that the MVNO’s calling technology needed to install specialized software on mobile users’ handsets. But with the upcoming new smartphone additions, Republic Wireless can now boast a wider range of handset options compared to Google’s Project Fi, a rival Wi-Fi-centric MVNO. To date, Project Fi only has the LG Nexus 5X and the Huawei Nexus 6P.
Republic Wireless is in the process of testing and certifying new smartphones that can leverage its Adaptive Coverage, a feature that makes full use of Bonded Calling technology in order to further enhance the quality of phone calls made over Wi-Fi. Apart from improving overall call quality, Bonded Calling technology also minimizes the occurrence of frequent Wi-Fi-to-cellular switching, which can be costly.
Lastly, Republic Wireless has also revealed that it is planning to introduce new pricing plans along with the new smartphone additions to its portfolio. No details have been made public yet regarding the new pricing plans, but the MVNO has hinted that a $20 a month option will come with unlimited voice calls, text messaging, and 1 gigabyte of LTE data.
