Having revised this article in 2015, I'm currently revisiting Brazil after some years. Only speaking the language very bad, I was expecting having a hard ride in purchasing a local SIM card. So it was the ultimate test for this WIKI admin to check, if the products that he endorse can be bought in practice.

I went to a TIM store in a touristy neigborhood in Sao Paulo (in Frei Caneca Mall) and tried my luck. One shop attendant has really heard about TIM Visitor and actually knew how to activate it on a foreign passport.

As this SIM plan is only given out to foreigners, shops do mostly ignore it. And many users have reported of having a real hard time finding it. Now, I can give you the more shocking news: any given TIM prepaid SIM starter can be activated on the TIM Visitor plan by the shop attendants. It doesn't need to be a special branded one. But the shops mostly don't know (or want to know / pretend not to know) how to do it.

By the way, it's worth looking or insisting for it. I payed in total R$10 for the SIM as a promotion (I didn't quite understand) with R$50 credit on it valid for 30 days. R$25 is deducted for 1.5 GB 4G data for a week. So I may get 3 GB in 2 weeks for R$10 in total. This is too good to be true and the only country I know where data is sold much cheaper to foreigners than to locals. After all, it was a matter of coincidence and good luck. In the next shop it can be a totally different story and you can face ignorance or incompetence.
