yEd is a desktop application that can be used to quickly and effectively generate high-quality diagrams. Users can create diagrams manually, or import their external data for analysis. yEd’s automatic layout algorithms arranges even large data sets with just the press of a button. yEd is freely available and runs on all major platforms: Windows, Unix/Linux, and Mac OS X.With yEd users can Import their own data from an Excel spreadsheet (.xls) or XML, create diagrams with ease via an intuitive user interface, automatically arrange their diagram elements and export bitmap and vector graphics as PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF, SWF. yEd supports a wide variety of diagram types such as: BPMN Diagrams, Flowcharts, Family Trees, Semantic Networks, Social Networks and UML Class Diagrams. yEd also supports organization charts, mind maps, swimlane diagrams, Entity Relationship diagrams, and many more.
The Organic layout algorithm is able to automatically recognize regular substructures in a diagram and arrange them in an optimized manner depending on the kind of substructure. Four different kinds of substructures can be recognized: chains, stars, circles, and parallel substructures.yEd requires a Java 8 Runtime Environment (JRE) to run on, which isn’t available for older operating systems. Thus, yEd needs at least Windows Vista or Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) to run.
