Indy Metro Police have made an arrest this morning for a retail break-in on the city’s northwest side. They found this guy in a unique spot. Good day to you Indy….
The suspect allegedly broke into the Best Buy store near Lafayette Road and Interstate 65 this morning and the search was on for him. IMPD and the Pike Township Fire Department complete with K-9 units and access to the roof actually joined forces in the hunt for him around in the store around 5:30. According to various media reports, they ‘got their man’ when they found him in a ‘false ceiling’—up behind in the ceiling tiles inside the store about an hour later. The suspect wasn’t injured in the arrest.
No charges are being filed against Park Tudor School over its mishandling of an inappropriate relationship between a student and staff member. A deferred prosecution agreement filed on Tuesday requires, among other things, continued cooperation with investigators, and honest and prompt reporting of incidents. In the agreement, Park Tudor also acknowledged that former Headmaster Matthew Miller omitted key facts and circumstances related to explicit communications between former basketball coach Kyle Cox and a 15-year-old female student. Miller later committed suicide.
Workers at the Indiana Voter Registration Project say they forged signatures or faked voter registration forms entirely to get paid. WISH-TV is reporting on court documents that show workers admitted to the Indiana State Police that they faked voter registration forms. The workers say they felt pressured to meet quotas. Voter Registration Project managers say they never forced workers to meet unrealistic goals. The project’s parent organization, Patriot Majority USA, wanted the warrant unsealed, according to WTHR-TV. The documents also show the ‘questionable’ voter registration forms were flagged for election officials before they were turned in. All registration forms collected by voter’s groups must be turned in by law.
Formal charges are being filed against the seven people arrested during Indianapolis’ anti-Trump rally. The charges range from obstructing traffic to battery against a public safety official. Saturday’s rally began at the Statehouse, but turned temporarily violent as protesters marched through downtown. Both, anti-Trump protesters and Trump supporters were on the scene. IMPD says one group of protesters started chanting threats, such as “kill the police,” and as officers tried to arrest the instigators, they had rocks thrown at them.

The presidential election is being blamed for an increase in rowdy student behavior at one suburban Indianapolis school district. Noblesville Schools sent a note home to parents this week that said election rhetoric is “being used in a way that is inappropriate and disrespectful to other students.” Parents were told that specific incidents are being handled on a case-by-case basis. The letter also encouraged parents to teach their children the importance of respect even when disagreement exists.

Campus leaders at IUPUI are insisting fliers that touted white supremacist messages aren’t free speech. University officials pulled the fliers from campus yesterday. IUPUI spokeswoman Margie Smith-Simmons says the school welcomes free speech and an open discussion. But she says IUPUI won’t tolerate the messages that the fliers tried to spread.

In fact, as a response to reports of students who say they’re uncomfortable with possible immigration changes, Fox 59 reports campus walkouts are planned for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at college campuses across the nation, including at IUPUI. Protesting students are part of a group of more than 130 campuses nationwide, and who are calling for sanctuary campuses–havens for people who they call the “most vulnerable.” They include among the most vulnerable students who are undocumented citizens. Indianapolis organizers told the television station their protest this will stand in opposition to what they call hate and racism. In addition to IUPUI, other Indiana students are participating on the campuses of Indiana University-Bloomington and South Bend, the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ivy Tech Community College (multiple campus sites), Indiana State University in Terre Haute, and DePauw University in Greencastle.

“Mike Pence” is a very generous person. News reports say as many as 20,000 people have donated to Planned Parenthood in Pence’s name. The donations are a protest for Pence’s pro-life stance. The real Vice-President elect isn’t saying what he thinks of the donations to the organization that he has targeted throughout his political career. We know Indiana is losing more jobs, post-election. General Motors is cutting about 160 jobs from its plant in Kokomo. The company says it has to downsize the workforce to stay profitable. Anyone losing their job should find out next year. About 750 people work at that GM plant.
A 20-year holiday tradition in Hamilton County is on pause for this year. The Indiana Transportation Museum says the “Polar Bear Express” won’t run this holiday season. The museum has been trying to fix safety issues found with the track earlier this year, but can’t get it done in time for the excursion. The safety issues also prompted the end of the annual train ride from Fishers to the Indiana State Fair in August.

The nation’s leaders are choosing their leadership today. Senate Republicans and Democrats are meeting separately to choose their leadership teams for the next Congress. No surprises are expected. Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell is set to continue as Senate Majority Leader. Paul Ryan is likely to continue as Speaker of the House. There will be a change on the Democratic side with New York’s Chuck Schumer becoming Senate Minority Leader. Schumer will replace Nevada’s Harry Reid, who is retiring at year’s end.

Ivanka Trump’s jewelry company is taking some heat for marketing a $10,000 bracelet she wore during the “60 Minutes” interview with her family. Social media went wild soon after the future first daughter’s company did an email blast noting the bracelet from the Metropolis Collection is one of Ivanka’s favorites. One Tweet noted, “history can now record the first monetization of the Trump presidency.” A spokeswoman explained the email was sent by a “well intentioned” marketing employee who is still making adjustments, post election, adding new policies and procedures are under discussion.
Some luxury apartment buildings in Manhattan are no longer bearing the Trump name. Crews went out early Wednesday morning and began removing the “Trump Place” sign from the luxury condos after hundreds of residents signed a petition calling for the Donald Trump Brand to be tossed. In a statement, building owner Equity Apartments said, “assuming a more neutral building identity will appeal to all current and future residents.”

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s court appearance next week involving Bridgegate is being postponed. Christie was supposed to make an appearance in municipal court on an official misconduct complaint but a judge delayed it until next year after Christie’s attorney appealed. Activist Bill Brennan’s complaint argues Christie should have stopped the 2013 lane closures at the George Washington Bridge because he claims Christie knew about the scheme. For his argument, activist Bill Brennan referred to David Wildstein’s testimony in the Bridgegate trial, where he claimed Christie was informed of the traffic jam scheme while it was happening.

The city of Flint, Michigan will continue under a state of emergency under a new declaration from the mayor because of continuing problems with lead in the water system. More than 300 lead pipes have been replaced with copper lines so far this year, but Mayor Karen Weaver wants another 5,000 connections to houses and businesses taken out. She added that water department customers should continue to use filters on their faucets or drink bottled water because the crisis is not over. The local emergency goes until further notice, but related state and federal declarations ended three months ago.
