PMA, ILWU Continue Contract Negotiations

PPAI is joining with the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the National Retail Federation (NRF) and 61 other organizations to encourage the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) to continue in the contract negotiations process. The PMA and ILWU are negotiating a labor contract governing nearly 20,000 workers at U.S. West Coast ports and the situation remains fluid.

U.S. Unemployment Rate Drops To Lowest Level Since September 2008

The U.S. added 288,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate shrank to 6.1 percent, its lowest point since September 2008, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported. Employment in the country has grown by more than 200,000 jobs-per-month for five consecutive months, the first time it has done so since the late 1990s.

Standard Register, parent company of industry distributor WorkflowOne (UPIC: SF00001), has expanded its promotional marketing business under new leadership. Michael Giachetti will lead the team as vice president and general manager for promotional marketing. The company is also adding four strategic promotional marketing leadership field positions. Three have been named: Chandra Geschwill in the South, Brad White in the West and Joe Whitman in the Midwest.

Distributor Goldner Associates (UPIC: GOLDNER) in Nashville, Tennessee, has brought Bill Petrie on as director of business development. Petrie has 14 years of industry experience, most recently as vice president of promotional marketing at Guy Brown (UPIC: GUYBRO). He has also served on the board of PPAChicago and is currently a mentor through PromoKitchen. In his new role, Petrie will be responsible for developing new business opportunities and growing the company’s sales.

Promotional PSI (UPIC: PromoPSI) in Carrollton, Texas, has added Susan Rosso to its team as its new supplier sales representative. Rosso has been in the promotional industry for more than 17 years and will be working with distributors in the Northeast territory—Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Mark Larned, president of Freedom Line Marketing (UPIC: F603929), has joined supplier Dorcy Special Markets Division (UPIC: Dorcy) to represent the Columbus, Ohio, company throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Ash City (UPIC: ash0001) in Richmond Hill, Ontario, has promoted Tom Alavi to dedicated sales representative for the greater Toronto area west territory. Alavi joined the supplier in 2012 as an inside sales representative and most recently served as inside sales supervisor at the company. In his new role, he will be responsible for building relationships with suppliers, growing sales and acting as the point of contact for customers in his area.

Eric Cox, a member of Phoenix, Arizona-based Graphco Line’s (UPIC: GRAPHCO) customer service department, has been certified as the supplier’s product safety ambassador with PPAI. Daniel Estrada has also joined the company’s customer service team, while Delca Kaster is now head of its sample department.

Distributors should submit case studies and suppliers should submit product descriptions and large, high-resolution images of their product picks to Jen Alexander by July 11.

Roll The Dice

October’s Market to Market looks at the gaming industry. Distributors are encouraged to share case studies of programs they’ve built for casinos, bingo halls, raffle contests and races, as well as tips on working with gaming industry clients.
