The Drowning Men
Oceanside, CA indie rockers THE DROWNING MEN had a summer that saw them going non-stop, from a cross-country co-headlining tour with River City Extension to the release of their critically acclaimed sophomore full-length, All Of The Unknown. And now with the announcement of two tours, one with indie-rock supergroup Bad Books (feat. Kevin Devine and members of Manchester Orchestra) and an East Coast-heavy headlining stint, The Drowning Men are already moving full-steam ahead into the fall as well.
Formed in 2006 by long-time friends Nathan "Nato" Bardeen (vocals, keyboards, guitar, mandolin), James Smith (guitar, vocals), and Rory Dolan (drums), the three quickly recruited Todd Eisenkerch (bass, vocals) and Gabriel Messer (keyboards, vocals) to round out The Drowning Men's line-up. The band self-released their first EP, Kill the Matador, in 2007. In 2009, the band went into the studio with Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession, Ugly Casanova) to record their first LP The Beheading of the Songbird, which was self-released later that year and then officially re-released by their current label, Borstal Beat Records in 2011 in preparation for the release of their second full-length, All of the Unknown.
On All of the Unknown, it's easy to see just how the members of The Drowning Men fit together. Sharp, intricate guitar lines play off dreamy, plaintive vocals and catchy melodies to create songs that are infinitely enjoyable. The addition of unusual instruments such as the theremin only serve to enhance the band's charm. Produced by Grammy-nominated producer and songwriter Billy Mohler whose credits including working with Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, Macy Gray, Miss Derringer and AWOLNATION among many others, the album grabbed the attention of critics everywhere.
