CAUTION: Spoilers of the movie ahead.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie has been out for a few weeks already, but this past week Diamond Select Toys sent over a case of their comic shop/ specialty store assortment for the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Minimates line for us to take a look at. The case ratio is as follows:
(4) Battle-Damaged Spider-Man with Electro
(4) Spider-Man with Green Goblin
(3) Peter Parker with Gwen Stacy
(1) Alistair Smythe with Aleksei Sytsevich
Here is a closer look of the packaging and each of the characters:
Battle-Damaged Spider-Man and Electro
This version of Spider-Man, all beaten up from battle, comes with his web slinger rope, as well as his iconic NYFD helmet that he wears in the movie. Electro comes with his electric energy bursts.
Spider-Man with Green Goblin
This version of Spider-Man also comes with his web slinger rope, as well as a bullhorn and a cellphone. Green Goblin comes without an accessory.
Peter Parker with Gwen Stacy
Peter comes with a reversible upper torso and a Spider-Man mask so he can start to change into his alter-ego. He also comes with a backpack. Gwen comes with a cellphone.
Alistair Smythe with Aleksei Sytsevich
Alistair comes with a briefcase, a cell phone, and a pair of interchangable arms for when he takes off his suit jacket. Aleksei comes with a gun and an interchangable pair of legs showing off his Rhino underwear (foreshadowing much?).
Over all, I like the majority of the figures. I feel the weakest 2pk is the short packed Alistair and Aleksei. OK, so at the end of the movie, Aleksei becomes the Rhino, with the help of Oscorp. However, as Aleksei, he is maybe 10 minutes of the movie in the beginning, if that. That does beat the time spent by Alistair in the movie by about 8 minutes. Briefly appearing on screen, the only reason I can see him being included is because his character eventually becomes to creator of the Spider Slayers, which could be an important feature of an upcoming movie.
As far as accessories are concerned, I feel this assortment is lacking. I can understand not getting a Minimates version of Rhino, but instead getting Aleksei. However, I felt that the Green Goblin could have gotten one of his pumpkin bombs, which does appear briefly in the movie, or maybe even his glider. Gwen was also lacking in the accessories, but I really could not think of something for her… aside from a headstone for her death at the end. I did find it a little disappointing that the award for the most accessories went to the Alistair/ Aleksei 2pk.
That being said, I think that the figures together look pretty great, and any Marvel or Spider-Man fan would enjoy having them as part of their collection.
As what has happened in the past recently, in addition to the Comic Shops case pack, Toys ‘R’ Us stores are also carrying an assortment of Minimates from the movie.
~ Battle-Damaged Spider-Man with Translucent Electro
~ Spider-Man with Grinning Green Goblin
~ Peter Parker with Gwen Stacy
~ Flashback Spider-Man with Max Dillon
Taking a look at the photos of the TRU assortment, the Green Goblins that came in the Comic Stores case we received all were grinning, so it is possible that DST ditched a second version of him. Also, in the TRU case, the Max Dillon 2pk is the short packed one, with only (1) 2pk per case. I personally love the look of the Flashback Spider-Man/ Max Dillon 2pk, so I will be picking that one up from TRU to add it to the collection.
