Senators against the reimposition of death penalty are seen to outnumber those seeking to re-impose it as punishment to heinous crimes, Sen. Richard Gordon said Tuesday (Feb. 7).

After panel deliberations on measure to bring back capital punishment, Gordon said only 10 senators are supportive of the bill at the moment.

“Ang anti mas marami pero hindi natin alam kung iyon ay papasok,” he said.

So far, those against the bill include Minority Leader Ralph Recto as well as Senators Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Antonio Trillanes IV, Leila de Lima, Grace Poe, Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino and Senate President Pro Tempore Franklin Drilon.

De Lima said death penalty “is wrong on legal, moral, ethical and constitutional grounds.”

Hontiveros, meanwhile, said reforming the justice system in the country should instead be prioritized by the administration instead of restoring death penalty.

“Hanggang korap at mabagal ang sistemang pangkatarugan sa Pilipinas, walang garantiya na ang parusang kamatayan ay magbibigay ng tunay na katarugan para sa lahat. Katulad ng kasalukuyang extrajudicial killings, ang kaya lamang nito patayin ay ang mga mahihirap,” she said.

The bill reviving death penalty has hurdled the committee level at the House of Representatives and is now up for plenary debates.
