President Benigno Aquino III expressed gladness Friday, October 2, that case of his former colleague in Congress, the late Abra Congressman Luis Bersamin Jr., has finally reached a resolution.
In his speech during the groundbreaking of the Supreme Court (SC) complex in Taguig, President Aquino welcomed the court’s decision, which found former Abra Governor Vicente Isidro Valera and two others guilty for the death of Bersamin and his police escort Senior Police Officer 1 Adolfo Ortega.
“Umpisahan ko ho itong talumpati sa isang pagbati para sa naging pasya ng hukuman sa kaso ng namayapang Congressman Chito Bersaminm,” Aquino said.
“Dati ko po siyang kasamahan sa Kongreso, at talagang natuwa ako nang nabalitaang nagkaroon na ng resolusyon ang kaso. Matapos nga po ang siyam na taon, sa wakas, ay nakamit na ni Chito at ng kanyang pamilya ang tunay na katarungan,” he added.
Valera was convicted of two counts of murder while his two other accused Rufino Panday and Leo Bello faced one frustrated murder.
All three were sentenced to up to 40 years imprisonment.
Bersamin was shot to death at the compound of Mount Carmel Church in Quezon City on December 16, 2006. He was the brother of Supreme Court Associate Justice Lucas Bersamin.
