In a rare occurrence, Senator Antonio Trillanes has backed the government’s declaration of an all out war against the New People’s Army following the termination of peace talks with its political wing, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.

But Trillanes, a former soldier, said going after the NPA must come hand in hand with the ouster of left-leaning officials in President Rodrigo Duterte’s Cabinet.

“[T]o prove that this is not another bluster, President Duterte must immediately fire the CPP officials whom he appointed to various high positions in government,” the senator said in a text message Tuesday (Feb. 7).

Three of Duterte’s Cabinet members were endorsed by the NDFP: Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo, Agrarian Reform Secretary Rafael Mariano and National Anti Poverty Commission chair Liza Maza.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has announced an all-out war against the NPA because Duterte branded it a “terrorist” group.

The President has already scuttled peace talks with the NDFP, citing its various demands which he said were unreasonable.

Duterte has also ended the ceasefire with the NPA.
