President Rodrigo Duterte once again praised former President Ferdinand Marcos lavishly for his intelligence and the accomplishments he had throughout his more than two-decade rule.

In his speech at the launch of a garden in Malacanang Park Monday (Feb. 6), Duterte said the Philippines would have been better off if Marcos-era programs such as Biyayang Dagat and Masaganan 99 were continued and the money, not stolen.

Referring to Marcos, the President then said: “Marami siyang mali pero huwag naman natin isahin na wala siyang ginawa. But dito sa utak, I said he was the most enterprising President that we ever had.”

Duterte said Marcos was not rich but had a “simple country life” as he was growing up in Ilocos Norte.

The President stressed that he only followed the law by allowing Marcos to be given a hero’s burial even if he declared Martial Law.

“He might have been a coward, wala na tayong pakialam na coward na sundalo. We were not there during the war. He might have been a bad President but that is for history to decide. Dumaan naman sila lahat bakit nila hindi tinanggal ‘yung batas ‘yan? So pagdating sa akin, I just enforced it,” he said.

Marcos’ remains were buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani last Nov. 18, 2016.
