LIVE FROM NEW YORK -- a peek at the strategy… -- @realDonaldTrump at 9 a.m.: “Tremendous support (except for some Republican ‘leadership’). Thank you.” … 9:17 a.m. “EXCLUSIVE — Video Interview: Bill Clinton Accuser Juanita Broaddrick Relives Brutal Rapes” http://bit.ly/2e4QkVp ... @realDonaldTrump at 10:12 a.m: "So many self-righteous hypocrites. Watch their poll numbers - and elections - go down!"

Good Sunday morning. Yes, it’s early but we had a POLITICO/Morning Consult poll in the field yesterday. We polled 1,549 registered voters, with 1,390 likely voters. Here’s what we found in our initial reaction:

--70% of Democrats and 12% of Republicans think Trump should drop out of the race.

--WE DIAL TESTED THE VIDEO, AND IT ISN’T GOOD. 74% of voters had a negative reaction to the video. 47% said they had a “very negative” reaction to the video -- the worst rating. 69% of Democrats said they had a very negative impression. 22% of Republicans had a very negative reaction. 10% of Republicans said the video gave them a positive feeling.

-- 48% of respondents said this is how men talk in private. 36% said it’s not. 48% said these were Trump’s views, and 40% chalked it up to locker room banter.

--HILLARY CLINTON IS WINNING. She’s up four points -- 42% to 38% -- in both the four-way race, and 45% to 41% in the two-way race.

Poll story http://politi.co/2do6Tqq … More details on the poll and its methodology can be found in these four documents -- Toplines http://bit.ly/2dVJL2y … Crosstabshttp://bit.ly/2dK7p3v ... Topical questions -- Toplines http://bit.ly/2dTh7Q6 … Crosstabs http://bit.ly/2dK8pVe

IT COULD TAKE DAYS for the video to fully bake into public sentiment, according to Republican aides tracking the presidential race and congressional races around the country.

IMPORTANT POLLS -- before the tape was released -- NBC/WSJ/MARIST: FLORIDA -- Hillary Clinton 45, Donald Trump 42 … PENNSYLVANIA -- Hillary Clinton 49, Donald Trump 37 http://nbcnews.to/2efXWU5

30 DAYS until ELECTION DAY.

SUNDAY BEST -- RUDY GIULIANI to Chuck Todd on MTP: TODD: “You're saying that the words are wrong. How about the actions?” GIULIANI: “Well, the actions would be even worse if they were actions. Talk and action are two different things. … I’m not implying it was made up. I said we’re talking about things that he was talking about. I don’t know how much he was exaggerating, I don't know how much is true. I certainly don’t know the details of it. But I do know that this is unfortunately the kind of talk that goes on among a lot of people and they shouldn’t talk about this. This is wrong.”

RUDY to John Dickerson on Face the Nation -- “[H]e’s asking for forgiveness and I think when you look at what’s at stake here, the number of people who voted for him, the number of people who have confidence in him, the number of people who believe he’s leading a movement to change Washington and his opponent is someone who is more of the same, I think there is a heavy weight on him to not pull out and run this race to the end. … I’m a Catholic, you go to confession and explain your sins to the priest and then he makes a firm resolution for you not to do it again and gives you absolution. He’s telling the American people, I sinned, I was wrong, I made terrible mistakes and I’m asking you for your forgiveness.”

DICKERSON: “What does it say about his character? RUDY: “What it says about his character is he’s a flawed human being and Gosh, under my sort of theology ... we all are. He has his set of flaws and I have mine.” … DICKERSON: “Mike Pence recently said character matters to the presidency and Donald Trump will bring the highest level of integrity. Does that characterization, the highest level of integrity, still stand?” RUDY: “You know, I don’t know. I hate to get terribly theological about it but ever read the confessions of St. Augustine? The reality is men can change, people can change. Sometimes going through things like this makes you a much better person, I know Donald Trump through 28-29 years, I’ve never heard him talk like that and seen him do a lot of wonderful things for people.”

--JAKE TAPPER got Tim Kaine. @jaketapper: “Kaine on @CNNSotu: theres ‘a piece of the jigsaw puzzle missing in Trump where he does not look at women and consider them equal to himself’” ... @CNNSotu: “.@timkaine says he’s not sure hacked documents accurately show Clinton position. @Jaketapper: ‘you could ask her.’” http://bit.ly/2dWGuQr

HOUSE REPUBLICANS are holding a post-debate conference call tomorrow morning. There is a yearning inside the GOP for the leadership to take a stronger line on Trump. We expect it in the coming days.

--DCCC STRATEGY: “Any Congressional Republican fleeing from Trump at this point is doing it purely out of political calculation and not bravery. And they are way too late (morally and strategically). The Trump comments were beyond the pale, but we ALL know that Trump has always been this person. The difference now is that it’s 30 days from the already rocky re-election for these guys. We will continue to tie them to their front-runner and call these desperate attempts out for what they are.”

WHAT REPUBLICANS ARE SAYING -- Whether you like Trump or not and think he should drop out of the race or not, there are 469 other races for Congress on ballots around the country in a few weeks, and senior GOP operatives are beginning to be very concerned.Whatever you think the fallout will be, the House is more in play today than it was Friday morning. That’s not us saying it, that’s top Republicans who are desperately trying to keep control of the chamber in the year of Trump.

IN THE SENATE, top operatives are becoming more and more concerned about Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), and expect to see more action there in the coming days and weeks. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) looked like he was coasting to victory, but new polling has the race close. THE BIGGEST CONCERN -- That Republicans just don’t show up to vote.

--JOHN BRESNAHAN and BURGESS EVERETT, “Hill GOP leaders hunker down as Trump implodes”: “As crisis engulfed Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, with dozens of rank-and-file Republicans demanding he step aside or revoking their endorsements Saturday, House and Senate GOP leaders did the same thing they’ve done for months: nothing. Trump's performance in Sunday’s debate with Hillary Clinton will decide whether they continue to implicitly support him or go their own way. The latter course would mean ceding the battle for the White House in a desperate — and unprecedented — bid to save their House and Senate majorities. Either path has huge risks, yet at this point, GOP leaders privately believe that the cautious approach of ‘condemning but still supporting’ is their only viable option.” http://politi.co/2doh8Le

MONICA LANGLEY in the WSJ -- “Pence Tells Donors He Is Fully Committed to Trump: Comments come as Republicans break away from the GOP nominee”: “Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence told Republican donors Saturday night that he is fully committed to Donald Trump, aides said. Speculation that Mr. Pence might leave the ticket, following in the footsteps of other Republicans who abandoned Mr. Trump on Saturday after the release of a videotape of the nominee making lewd comments of women, is ‘categorically false,’ one aide said. ‘Governor Pence spoke enthusiastically about Mr. Trump, his pro-growth economic policies and the movement he’s begun,’ said Marty Obst, director of Trump-Pence vice presidential operations. None of the donors at the Saturday fundraiser in Providence, R.I., canceled after the release of the video, or asked questions about it, Mr. Obst said. ‘Several guests remarked that they didn’t want to get caught up trying to dissect every statement by Mr. Trump,’ Mr. Obst said. ‘They were focused instead on his message and his positions.’” http://on.wsj.com/2dBuSW3

NYT, SUNDAY A1 -- “Donald Trump’s Conduct Was Excused Again and Again. But Not This Time,” by Michael Barbaro and Pat Healy: “When Donald J. Trump promised to turn Muslims away from American shores, they wagged their fingers. When he mimicked a journalist for his lifelong disability, they tsked-tsked. When he mocked the mother of a valorous soldier killed in combat, they threatened to walk away from him. But Republican leaders never did. They justified his behavior, they minimized his offenses, they excused his insults.

“So why this? Why did a decade-old three-minute video provoke a sudden revolt by party officials against their nominee, an uprising that could very well destroy their chances of taking the White House? Because the glee with which he bragged about sexually assaulting women, by forcibly kissing them and grabbing their genitals, turned a boorish man into an outright predator ...

“Temple Taggart was a 21-year-old beauty contestant when, she said, Mr. Trump kissed her on the lips, without invitation, at a pageant event. It was an unwanted advance she has turned over in her head for years. Watching him relive his sexual aggressions on the video, she said in an interview on Saturday, ‘made me feel a lot better.’ ‘It was like: ‘Thank you. Now no one can say I made this up,’ she added.” http://nyti.ms/2dOML4c

IF YOU READ ONE THING -- “Turmoil reigns inside Trump Tower,” by Alex Isenstadt in D.C. and Glenn Thrush in St. Louis: “The staggering events of the 72 hours leading up to Sunday’s showdown here with Hillary Clinton – capped off by an unprecedented exodus of at least two dozen high-profile GOP supporters – would have posed an overwhelming challenge to any debate-prep team. But Trump doesn’t really have such a team, not in the conventional sense. His rotating circle of advisers are confused about what to do and the candidate is unwilling or incapable of preparing a game plan, Republican officials and people close to the campaign told POLITICO.

“Even if Trump’s Friday fiasco had never happened, he’d still be in deep trouble -- and his campaign remains in a state of disarray. In interviews conducted over last week, campaign aides complained about improvisational decision-making, and a lack of communication that often leads to mixed signals and confusion. With so few people on staff – Trump’s skeleton operation is a fraction the size of Clinton’s massive Brooklyn operation – senior advisers are often scattered around the country on various assignments, making it hard to implement consistent messaging, a coherent communications strategy and a debate prep system that will protect the vulnerable candidate.

“[Steve] Bannon has been urging Trump to brand himself as a populist-minded change agent – a line that he used briefly, and effectively, during the Hofstra showdown. Over the course of the week, Trump reiterated the messaging on a number of stops, including ones in Florida, Iowa, and Wisconsin – a message largely lost by his obsessive defense of comments ridiculing the weight a former Miss Universe. Some Trump aides saw the change agent argument – and his effective criticism of Clinton as a failed reformer with a 30-year-record of disappointment – as his best moment in the debate, and some members of his new polling team, which has grown to a handful of people, also liked what they saw. But, back in Trump Tower, two other members of the nominee’s senior team, campaign manager Kellyanne Conway and son-in-law Jared Kushner, were pushing for the campaign’s ad makers to produce scripts that would go after Clinton’s character – hard. Several focus groups were scheduled, including one in the critical North Carolina battleground, and they wanted to test TV ads that attacked the former secretary of state as a corrupt figure and that highlighted her use of a private email server.” http://politi.co/2dCHzSN

TOP TWEETS -- @JoshuaGreen: “Trump source on debate strategy: ‘She’s as much an attacker of women as Bill. We’re fully loaded. She’s gonna have to confront her accusers’” … @jasonnobleDMR: “@SenTomCotton calls tomorrow’s debate Donald Trump’s last chance to ‘beg for forgiveness’ and ‘pledge to finally change his ways.’”

THE DEBATE -- Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will debate tonight at 9 p.m. eastern, 8 p.m. in St. Louis. Co-moderators are CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC’s Martha Raddatz.

NOT SINCE WOODROW WILSON -- That’s the last time the Columbus Dispatch endorsed a Democrat. They endorsed Hillary Clinton. “Editorial: For president | Trump unfit, Clinton is qualified”: “For us, the choice between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is not pleasant, but it isn’t difficult. Republican candidate Donald Trump is unfit to be president of the United States. Democrat Hillary Clinton, despite her flaws, is well-equipped for the job. The Dispatch traditionally has endorsed Republican presidential candidates, but Trump does not espouse or support traditional Republican values, such as fiscal prudence, limited government and free trade, not to mention civility and decency. We are disappointed that so many Republican leaders have accommodated a narcissistic, morally bankrupt candidate who is so clearly out of step with those values.” http://bit.ly/2efKbVl

HOW ABOUT THAT… -- “NBC waited for green light from lawyers before airing Trump video,” by WaPo’s Paul Farhi: “NBC News was aware of video footage of Donald Trump making lewd and disparaging remarks about women for nearly four days, a network executive said Saturday, but held onto the recording until lawyers finished reviewing the material. The network’s caution led to an awkward result: NBC News was scooped by The Washington Post, which took just five hours to vet and post its story. A tip from a source led to the Post breaking one of the most consequential stories of the 2016 presidential campaign …

“NBC News first became aware of the footage late Monday after receiving notice from producers at ‘Access Hollywood,’ a syndicated entertainment-news program owned by NBC. The program’s producers had combed their archives for interviews with Trump after reading an Associated Press account of crude remarks he had made about female contestants on ‘The Apprentice,’ the NBC reality program that Trump had starred on for 14 seasons … Although the news division had nearly completed its work on the story by Friday morning, the story was still not scheduled to air by then. ‘Access Hollywood,’ a daily program, had also not established an air date for its piece … [An anonymous] source called Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold around 11 a.m. Friday morning and pointed him to a copy of the tape on which Trump brags to ‘Access Hollywood’ co-host Billy Bush that his celebrity status entitles him to grope women. The Post reported and posted its story within five hours.” http://wapo.st/2dTOORB

DEEP DIVE – NYT A1, “How U.S. Torture Left Legacy of Damaged Minds,” by Matt Apuzzo, Sheri Fink and James Risen: “Beatings, sleep deprivation, menacing and other brutal tactics have led to persistent mental health problems among detainees held in secret C.I.A. prisons and at Guantánamo.” http://nyti.ms/2dDLEmB

BERNIE SANDERS responds to the Wikileaks release (from Gabe Debenedetti): “Whatever Secretary Clinton may or may not have said behind closed doors on Wall Street, I am determined to implement the agenda of the Democratic Party platform which was agreed to by her campaign. Among other things, that agenda calls for breaking up the largest financial institutions in this country, re-establishing Glass-Steagall and prosecuting those many Wall Street CEOs who engaged in illegal behavior. I intend to do everything I can to keep the TPP from coming up during the lame duck session of Congress and to defeat it if it does come up. We must transform our disastrous trade policies and create trade agreements that represent the needs of working families and not the CEOs of multi-national corporations.”

INSIDE BROOKLYN -- “How the Clinton campaign decisions get made: The WikiLeaks release of John Podesta’s emails reveals what the inner circle really worries about,” by Gabe Debenedetti: “When WikiLeaks published what it said was a trove of emails from the personal Gmail account of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta on Friday evening, it did more than just create a political headache for the Democratic nominee. The release also provided rare insight into the behind-the-scenes decision-making process of a massive and notoriously tight-lipped political operation that’s been singularly dedicated to delivering the White House to Hillary Clinton for over two years.

“The emails reveal a meticulously controlled environment at Clinton’s Brooklyn headquarters as it took on Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary. It’s a campaign with a penchant for caution, saddled with an outsized reliance on a tight group of Democratic operatives near the top for both delicate and routine tasks. Those senior officials oversaw the extraordinarily close choreography of the candidate’s most-scrutinized political moments in the early going, from a high-profile speech in Iowa to the tortured roll-out of Clinton’s opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline.” http://politi.co/2dCMl2F
