Happy Saturday! The Democratic convention kicks off Monday -- but the soft beginning is tomorrow, when Sunday shows broadcast from Philly. CBS’s John Dickerson - who scored an interview with President Obama - has won the weekend.

BULLETIN -- “AP-EU--APNewsAlert/17 09:11 AM MUNICH (AP) - German interior minister says ‘no indication of any connection to international terrorism’ to Munich attack.”

KNOWING KAINE -- “Kaine email trove shows media-savvy micromanager,” by Darren Samuelsohn with Donovan Harrell and Dan Spinelli: Hundreds of thousands of emails from his days as governor “show Kaine is no Joe Biden: He’s a media-savvy executive who avoids gaffes by discussing tricky topics with his staff before he speaks with reporters. He pays attention to even the smallest of detail — making his own spreadsheets, editing his online biography — and he doesn’t hesitate to throw around his connections with a certain politician named Barack Obama…He has a mastery of the behind-the-scenes tasks necessary to govern. And he’s proven capable of winning multiple elections in the battleground of Virginia, as well as across the other 49 states after a stint as chairman of the Democratic National Committee during Obama’s first term.” Story detailing 145,000 emails http://politi.co/29RQKf0

--Bonus read: “The 11 emails that explain Tim Kaine”: http://politi.co/2a4734y

TICK TOCK -- NYT’s Amy Chozick, Alan Rappeport and JMart: “As the search narrowed, Mrs. Clinton wanted to test her chemistry on the campaign trail with Mr. Kaine. After their Virginia rally last week, she invited him to her home in Washington for a meeting that lasted until 10:30 p.m. Last Saturday, the day after meeting with other candidates in Washington, she invited Mr. Kaine and his wife to lunch at her home in Chappaqua, N.Y., with her family.” http://nyti.ms/2a86OJE

--TRUMP’s pushback -- ‘Corrupt Kaine’ -- Tim Kaine accepted gifts while in office, as revealed in a POLITICO piece by Isaac Arnsdorf on June 30. (The gifts, which included Redskins tix and an $18,000 Caribbean vacation, were legal for him to accept.) http://politi.co/2a2K4pQ.

--Kaine’s flip-flop: He’s already told Clinton that he now opposes TPP. But he was talking up the Pacific trade pact as recently as Thursday: http://politi.co/2akT4cw

HOW IT PLAYED -- DRUDGE banner, “HILLARY RUNS WITH KAINE WHITE GUY ADDED TO TICKET” ... HuffPost banner, “VEEP!” … WaPo (one column, left-hand of A1) “Kane wins Democratic veepstakes as Clinton’s pick” … NYT (two columns, right hand side of A1), “Clinton Names a Senator as Vice-Presidential Pick”

WHAT BROOKLYN WANTS YOU TO READ -- “Even state Republicans have good things to say about Kaine,” by Alicia Petska in the Roanoke Times: “‘Even though we disagree on policy and principle, I respect him,’ said Speaker Bill Howell, R-Stafford, who was in office while Kaine was both lieutenant governor and governor. ‘His character makes it all the more surprising that he would sign up to defend Hillary Clinton for the next three and a half months,’ Howell said, adding Kaine’s addition to the ticket doesn’t ‘change that this election is ultimately a referendum on Secretary Clinton.’” http://bit.ly/2a86XwF

-- Hillary on Medium: “Like me, Tim grew up in the Midwest. During law school, he too took an unconventional path — he took time off and went to Honduras to work with missionaries, practicing both his faith and his Spanish. When he returned to the states and graduated from Harvard Law, he could have done anything. But instead of going to some big corporate firm, he chose to fight housing discrimination as a civil rights lawyer in Richmond. He and his wife joined a church, built a home centered around their faith, and raised three beautiful children. Then, after 17 years of practicing law, Tim ran for city council — and won.” http://bit.ly/29RV6CY

--Senators he is close with: Republicans Jeff Flake (Ariz.), Bob Corker (Tenn.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.). Democrats Mark Warner (Va.) and Ben Cardin (Md.) (h/t master of the Senate, Burgess Everett, who is covering Kaine for us).

--@PhilipRucker: “In terms of resume titles, has a ticket ever had more than Clinton-Kaine? SecState, Sen (2x), Gov, LtGov, Mayor, Councilman, FLOTUS, FLOAR.”

--@BrianStelter: “Just like last week… When @60Minutes had first joint interview with Trump/Pence… the program will have Clinton/Kaine’s first intw on Sunday”

FUN FACT: A reader emails Playbook: “In case you didn’t know, Tim Kaine is an awesome harmonica player. Here is a link to my video of him playing this past March.” http://bit.ly/2ahLnoQ

KRISTOL WATCH -- @BillKristol: “Mike Pence and Tim Kaine are both good guys. Couldn’t we re-shuffle the tickets, and have a choice between Pence-Kaine and Trump-Clinton?”

BUZZ FROM RICHMOND/NOVA -- If Hillary Clinton wins, and Tim Kaine becomes vice president, Gov. Terry McAuliffe will get to appoint someone to the Senate. The buzz in McAuliffe land is that he can appoint a placeholder, like the 77-year-old Chuck Robb, or someone who is a longer-term option like Rep. Don Beyer, Creigh Deeds, Attorney General Mark Herring or Anne Holton, the education secretary who is also Kaine’s wife. Tom Periello, a one-term congressman who is now at the State Department, could also be an option. McAuliffe WILL NOT appoint himself, sources close to him say.

FIRST LOOK -- Lifelong Republicans and Bush ‘43 alums John Stubbs and Ricardo Reyes launched Republicans for Hillary Friday, and told Playbook in an interview they are trying to provide a “home and a safe space for Republicans who are on what is a very personal and in many cases difficult journey to vote for Secretary Clinton,” Stubbs said. The group, which isn’t looking to raise big money or launch a super PAC, say they believe that electing Clinton could save the Republican Party as we know it. “Strategically speaking we will be better off as a Republican Party after four years of Clinton when we can reorganized and look at where we are,” Reyes said. Full op-ed in Washington Post: http://wapo.st/2ahJnvu

HOLLYWOOD COMES TO PHILLY -- Democratic sources are buzzing that the Sofitel Philadelphia is where movie stars will be camping out during the Democratic National Convention next week.

CLEVELAND ROCKS? -- Republicans always have a tough time booking A-list celebrities and musicians, but the contrast in star power between Philly and Cleveland is stunning. Next week, Dems have Snoop Dogg, Keisha, Lady Gaga, The Roots, Fergie and Nelly. To be fair: Republicans had several bands cancel this year.

OBAMA vs. TRUMP – per Nick Gass: Yesterday at a presser with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, he said: “[T]he one thing that I think is important to recognize is this idea that America is somehow on the verge of collapse, this vision of violence and chaos everywhere, doesn't really jibe with the experience of most people. I hope people, the next morning, walked outside and birds were chirping and the sun was out and this afternoon, people will be, you know, watching their kids play on sports teams and go to the swimming pool and folks are going to work and getting ready for the weekend. And in particular, I think it is important, just to be absolutely clear here, that some of the fears that were expressed throughout the week just don't jibe with the facts.” http://politi.co/2a3HqRr

TRUMP’S AMERICA -- “Donald Trump’s Journey: From Crashing a Party to Controlling Its Future,” by NYT’s Adam Nagourney and Alex Burns on A1: “Roger Stone, a longtime adviser to Mr. Trump, said this nominee would put his mark on the party, much the same way other powerful presidential nominees have done. ‘Every successful Republican president – Lincoln, McKinley, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan – has remade the party in his own image,’ he said. ‘We are going to be a middle class of working people again. We are leaving the Bush country-club party.’” http://nyti.ms/2a1dEC0

HOT DOC -- “Released emails Suggest the D.N.C. Derided the Sanders Campaign,” by NYT’s Michael D. Shear and Matthew Rosenberg: “In one of the emails, dated May 21, Mark Paustenbach, a committee communications official, wrote to a colleague about the possibility of urging reporters to write that Mr. Sanders’s campaign was ‘a mess’ after a glitch on the committee’s servers gave it access to Clinton voter data. ‘Wondering if there’s a good Bernie narrative for a story, which is that Bernie never ever had his act together, that his campaign was a mess,’ Mr. Paustenbach wrote to Luis Miranda, the communications director for the committee.” http://nyti.ms/2a2Rnhc … See Mark’s email http://bit.ly/2amEnZf

THEY’RE JUST LIKE US -- “Debbie Wasserman Schultz struggled to get 7 tickets to Hamilton,” by Bianca Padró Ocasio: “According to an email thread released Friday on WikiLeaks ... [DWS wrote:] ‘I am planning a trip with my college roommates in December to NYC. It is for our 50th birthdays. Can you help me get 7 tickets to Hamilton from our friend who did the FR?’ she asked DNC finance director Allen Zachary in late May. Zachary said it would be very difficult to get that many tickets, suggesting they sit in separate areas or go on different nights. ‘I’ve never seen an order of 7 fulfilled, I have seen as many as 4. Would you guys be willing to split up 4 and 3?’ he said. ‘We would want to go on the same night but we don't have to sit all together,’ Wasserman Schultz responded. ... The thread ends with the issue unresolved.” http://politi.co/29QZouz

DEPARTMENT OF NON-SURPRISES -- WashPost comes out against Trump early, “Donald Trump is a unique threat to American democracy”: “DONALD J. TRUMP, until now a Republican problem, this week became a challenge the nation must confront and overcome. ... We recognize that this is not the usual moment to make such a statement. In an ordinary election year, we would acknowledge the Republican nominee, move on to the Democratic convention and spend the following months, like other voters, evaluating the candidates’ performance in debates, on the stump and in position papers. ... But we cannot salute the Republican nominee or pretend that we might endorse him this fall. A Trump presidency would be dangerous for the nation and the world.” http://wapo.st/29QZqSS

PALACE INTRIGUE – “Former Trump Aide [Michael Caputo]: ‘Corey Lewandowski Was A Horrible Campaign Manager,’” by BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski: Caputo said on Kilmeade and Friends on Friday morning[:] ‘The worst decision Donald Trump ever made was hiring him. The best decision he ever made was getting rid of him. When he hired Paul Manafort 12 weeks ago — Paul Manafort’s a volunteer by the way, completely volunteer — Paul Manafort came in to make the changes. Corey was stopping him. Basically sabotaging everything that Paul Manafort was doing for weeks and weeks and weeks.’ Caputo ... [also said:] ‘I know, I was there, I was right there watching him screw Paul Manafort, every day and therefore, screwing his own candidate.’” http://bzfd.it/2a2l5WS

PAGING CNN! -- “MH370 Pilot Flew a Suicide Route on His Home Simulator Closely Matching Final Flight,” by Jeff Wise in NYMag.com: “New York has obtained a confidential document from the Malaysian police investigation into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that shows that the plane’s captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, conducted a simulated flight deep into the remote southern Indian Ocean less than a month before the plane vanished under uncannily similar circumstances. The revelation, which Malaysia withheld from a lengthy public report on the investigation, is the strongest evidence yet that Zaharie made off with the plane in a premeditated act of mass murder-suicide.” http://nym.ag/2aByZO9

CALIFORNIA SENATE WATCH -- “Rep. Loretta Sanchez implies Obama endorsed Senate rival because they are both black,” by Phil Willon and Jazmine Ulloa in the Los Angeles Times: “‘I think they have, what he said they have, is a friendship of many years. She is African American, as is he. They know each other through meetings,’” Sanchez said in Spanish during the interview.” http://lat.ms/2a0ouIr

SNEAK PEEK – Tomorrow’s N.Y. Times Mag cover, “Could Hillary Clinton Become the Champion of the 99 Percent? A coalition of progressives has been quietly building a plan to bring Occupy-style ideas into the political establishment. Will the Democratic nominee get on board?”: Gideon Lewis-Kraus looks at the universe of progressive political operatives and intellectuals in Washington and beyond, and how they plan to take some of the energy that we saw around the Bernie Sanders campaign and put it into practice in a possible Democratic administration. Lewis-Kraus profiles the Roosevelt Institute, which has become the center of a network of groups that have been drafting a platform to get more progressive regulators and staffers into a Democratic administration. But the broader theme is the big question: Will Hillary Clinton and her campaign go along with what seems to be a genuine movement among the electorate for more progressive policy ideas? http://nyti.ms/2ajqJ6l ... Interviews with four of those women portray the 76-year-old television powerhouse as a man who could be routinely crude and inappropriate, ogling young women, commenting about their breasts and legs, and fostering a macho, insensitive culture.” http://wapo.st/2a1czdD

Without Mr. Ailes guiding the network, conservatives and Republican politicians are left wondering whether the talk might soften under new leadership. ... ‘My bosses, whoever they have been, including Tim Pawlenty, Joni Ernst, Marco Rubio,’ [Alex] Conant ... said, ‘the No. 1 comment they get on the campaign trail is “I saw you on Fox.”’ With cameos by Corey, Tommy Vietor, Rick Tyler, Rick Santorum and Axe http://nyti.ms/2aByu6W
