Good Sunday morning. Enjoy the last day of July! We’re 100 days from Election Day 2016 and our former colleagues Alex Burns and Maggie Haberman put it well on A1 of the NY Times today. The headline online (“Electoral Map Gives Donald Trump Few Places to Go”) and in print (“3 States Seen as Must Wins For Trump Bid”) tell the story as many professionals on both sides see it. Trump needs to win Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania to win the presidency. It’s not a ton more complicated than that.Must read story: http://nyti.ms/2ar0pFR
There’s not been much polling in Florida recently, but as of July 11, NBC/WSJ had Hillary Clinton up seven points. In Ohio, the two were tied - or Trump was up modestly - as of a few weeks ago. And my colleague Steve Shepard notes this trend in Pennsylvania polling: @POLITICO_Steve: “Last five Pa. polls: Clinton +9, Trump +2, Clinton +9, Clinton +14, Clinton +9.”
--“Poll: Clinton Rides Convention Bump Past Trump,” by Morning Consult’s Cameron Easley: “The former secretary of State leads the brash businessman, 43 percent to 40 percent, in a new Morning Consult survey taken in the days following the DNC gathering. It’s a 7-point swing from the previous poll, in which Trump surged to a 4-point lead following the Republican National Committee’s convention in Cleveland … Part of Clinton’s gains can be attributed to her increased support from independent voters and men. In the new poll, Clinton leads Trump by one point, 43 percent to 42 percent, among men. Last week, Trump beat Clinton by 8 points among men.” http://bit.ly/2adiWF5

Of course, we’re all waiting for the rash of post-convention polling to come out. We should see some more this week. Senior Democratic operatives have been saying that the extent of the bump for Clinton will not be realized until the middle of August.
EXCLUSIVE - TRUMP BUILDING TRANSITION COMMITTEE: Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has begun to reach out to D.C. Republicans to build a transition committee, according to sources familiar with the process. Bill Palatucci, the New Jersey powerbroker close to Gov. Chris Christie, is assembling the committee -- Christie is the transition chairman and has already met with senior members of Romney’s transition team. Invitees have been given a questionnaire to fill out, which asks for personal information, including whether the candidate is interested in working full time or volunteering, their expertise and their interest in serving in an administration. It’s the first sign Trump is embracing Washington insiders in his quest to win the White House, and build a presidential staff.
SUNDAY BEST -- @mkraju: “Clinton on Fox re emails: ‘Director Comey said my answers were truthful and consistent w what I said w what I told the American people.’” ... @FoxNewsSunday: “.@HillaryClinton on @FoxNewsSunday: Russia arranged @TheDemocrats DNC email release”
MUST WATCH -- GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS interviews DONALD TRUMP for “This Week” -- TRUMP: “[Clinton is] a very dishonest person. I have one of the great temperaments. I have a winning temperament. She has a bad temperament. She's weak. We need a strong temperament. And that’s all it is. I have a strong temperament … I have a temperament where I know how to win. She doesn’t know how to win. Honestly, she lies a lot. And she really-- she should tell -- the truth. I honestly believe, if she told the truth -- ‘cause she made some reference to my campaigning, I've had a beautiful -- I’ve had a flawless campaign. You’ll be writing books about this campaign. And yet, she’s criticizing my campaign. Now, her campaign, she couldn’t beat Bernie, okay?” STEPHANOPOULOS: “Well, she did beat him.” TRUMP: “Well, barely. And there’s questions even about that, but barely.”
STEPHANOPOULOS: “Let’s talk about Russia. You made a lotta headlines with Russia this week. What exactly is your relationship with Vladimir Putin?” TRUMP: “I have no relationship with Putin. I have no relationship with Putin.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “But if you have no relationship with Putin, then why did you say, in 2013, ‘I do have a relationship,’ in 2014, ‘I spoke--’ TRUMP: “Because he has said nice things about me over the years … [J]ust so you understand, he said very nice things about me. But I have no relationship with him. I don’t-- I’ve never met him--”
STEPHANOPOULOS: “Yet, you said, for three years, ‘13, ‘14, and ‘15, that you did have a relationship with him--” TRUMP: “I had-- no, I-- look. What-- what do you call a relationship? I mean, he treats me--”STEPHANOPOULOS: “I’m asking you.” TRUMP: “--with great respect. I have no relationship with Putin.” “I don’t think I've ever met him. I never met him. I don’t think I’ve ever met him.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “You would know it if you did, wouldn’t you--” TRUMP: “I think so. Yeah, I think so. So I’ve-- I don’t think I’ve ever met him. I mean, if he’s in the same room or something, but I don’t think so.”
STEPHANOPOULOS: “Yeah, they took away the-- part of the platform calling for provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine to defend themselves. Why is that a good idea?” TRUMP: “It’s-- look, you know, I have my own ideas. He’s not going into Ukraine, okay, just so you understand. He’s not gonna go into Ukraine, all right? You can mark it down. You can put it down. You can take it anywhere you want--” STEPHANOPOULOS: “Well, he’s already there, isn’t he?” TRUMP: “Okay-- well, he’s there in a certain way.” Full transcript, with comments about Crimea, tax returns and NATO: http://abcn.ws/2annNGL
SHOT -- TRUMP to George: “I got a letter from the NFL saying, ‘This is ridiculous. Why are the debates against--’ ‘cause the NFL doesn’t wanna go against the debates. ‘Cause the debates are gonna be pretty massive, from what I understand, okay? And I don't think we should be against the NFL.”
CHASER - “While we’d obviously wish the debate commission could find another night, we did not send a letter to Trump,” NFL spokesman to CNN’s Brian Stelter. http://cnnmon.ie/2aIblkc
HILL WATCH -- After resigning her post at the DNC, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) is facing a primary challenge from Tim Canova, a Bernie Sanders-inspired candidate in her south Florida district. A tipster in Wasserman Schultz’s district sent this Canova Instagram ad, where he says “I stand with Israel for peace and security.” Wasserman Schultz has made her support of Israel a major part of her political persona -- the district is one of the most heavily Jewish districts in America. http://bit.ly/2apG7iP
HAPPENING TODAY -- Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine are in Columbus, Ohio, today. JUST ANNOUNCED: Kaine will go to Greensboro, N.C., Wednesday.
COMING ATTRACTIONS -- NYT A1, “If Russia Did Hack, How Should Obama Retaliate?” by David E. Sanger: “[T]he cost of doing nothing could be high. As the United States and other nations move to more electronic voting systems, the opportunities for mischief rise exponentially. Imagine, for example, a vote as close as the 2000 presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore, but with accusations about impossible-to-trace foreign manipulation of the ballots or the vote count, leaving Americans wondering about the validity of the outcome.” http://nyti.ms/2aC3Qgx
--ABC: “The NSA Is Likely ‘Hacking Back’ Russia’s Cyber Squads.” http://abcn.ws/2aGfMiu
BILLIONAIRE BEAT -- “Koch network refusing to help Trump,” by AP’s Steve Peoples in Colorado Springs at the Koch retreat: “Billionaire industrialist Charles Koch, host of the exclusive weekend retreat, did not mention Trump by name as warned that political leaders are giving ‘frightening’ answers to America’s challenges. One of his chief lieutenants was more direct as he made clear that Koch’s expansive political network would not use its tremendous resources to help Trump win this fall. ‘We’re focused on the Senate,’ said Mark Holden, general counsel and senior vice president of Koch Industries.” http://apne.ws/2alTK4T
TRUMP’S AMERICA -- “Khizr Khan responds to the latest from Trump: ‘Typical of a person without a soul,’” by WaPo’s Stephanie McCrummen: “In a series of statements Friday and Saturday, Trump responded to Khan’s speech, first telling the New York Times that he wondered whether Khan’s wife, who stood silently by his side as he spoke, was ‘allowed’ to speak, a response that drew widespread, bipartisan condemnation. In a written statement later Saturday, Trump — who has proposed suspending Muslim immigration to the U.S. — elaborated that Khan’s son, who was posthumously awarded a Gold Star and Purple Heart, was a ‘hero’ who should be ‘honored.’ … Responding to Trump’s latest statement, Khan said, ‘This is faked empathy.’ …
“In response to Trump’s attack on his wife, Khan said the Republican nominee’s words were ‘typical of a person without a soul.’ … Khan said his wife didn’t speak because she breaks down when she sees her son’s photograph — a huge one of which was projected onto a screen behind the stage at the convention. ‘Emotionally and physically — she just couldn’t even stand there, and when we left, as soon as we got off camera, she just broke down. And the people inside, the staff, were holding her, consoling her. She was just totally emotionally spent. Only those parents that have lost their son or daughter could imagine the pain that such a memory causes. Especially when a tribute is being paid. I was holding myself together, because one of us had to be strong. Normally, she is the stronger one. But in the matter of Humayun, she just breaks down any time anyone mentions it.’” http://wapo.st/2aElksk
--“Muslim Family of Fallen Army Captain Responds to Trump: ‘Shame on Him,’” by ABC’s Mary Bruce: “‘Sacrifice -- I don’t think he knows the meaning of sacrifice, the meaning of the word,’ Ghazala Khan, mother of slain Army Captain Humayun Kahn said. ‘Because when I was standing there, all America felt my pain. Without saying a single word. Everybody felt that pain.’
“While Ghazala Khan grew visibly upset, her husband, Khizr Khan was livid, urging Trump’s children to ‘tell him to learn to behave, learn to be decent.’ ‘Running for president is not an entitlement to disrespect Gold Star families and [a] Gold Star mother not realizing her pain. Shame on him! Shame on his family!’ Khizr Khan said, struggling to hold back his anger. ‘He is not worthy of our comments. He has no decency. He is void of decency, he has a dark heart.’
“‘I didn’t feel anything except the pain,’ she said through tears, before pleading: ‘Mr. Trump feel that pain and you will feel better. Please. I am very upset when I heard when he said that I didn’t say anything. I was in pain. If you were in pain you fight or you don't say anything, I’m not a fighter, I can’t fight. So the best thing I do was quiet.’” http://abcn.ws/2aIiS2p ... Video of Khan’s 7-min. DNC speech http://bit.ly/2aCjt7R
TOP TWEETS -- @JohnKasich: “There’s only one way to talk about Gold Star parents: with honor and respect. Capt. Khan is a hero. Together, we should pray for his family.” … California GOP consultant @RobStutzman: “Remember that time Ronald Reagan attacked the parents of a fallen American soldier? Me neither.”
TRAIL WATCH -- “Hillary Clinton’s star-spangled bus tour,” by Annie Karni in Johnstown, Pennsylvania: “Since Donald Trump’s convention in Cleveland, which painted a dark and isolationist vision of America and its place in the world, Democrats have sought to capitalize on the red, white and blue symbolism and rhetoric he has ceded them — Clinton campaign aides are now even distributing small American flags to supporters at their larger rallies.” http://politi.co/2apEXUu
PLAYBOOK METRO SECTION -- “When the titan wants to build the town: Under Armour founder Kevin Plank’s $5.5 billion plan for Baltimore,” by WashPost’s Jonathan O’Connell: “Founder Kevin Plank built a $27 billion empire here of sweat-resistant T-shirts and super-light sneakers. And its success inspires triumph in a city where social and economic scars run deep. ... In the spring, Plank announced that he had acquired more than 100 acres in the Port Covington industrial area, along the Patapsco River in south Baltimore. He has plotted a $5.5 billion development project, one of the largest in the country, comprising 45 city blocks and more than two miles of riverfront.” http://wapo.st/2aI5aMX
POST-PRESIDENCY -- “Woodlawn pins big hopes on Obama library,” by Chicago Tribune’s Kathy Bergen: “No sooner had President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama chosen historic Jackson Park for his presidential library than neighboring Woodlawn began to dream big. Real estate developers see the project, to be built near the Museum of Science and Industry at a cost of at least $500 million, as casting a positive glow over the impoverished community to the west. A prominent community leader expects the facility to trigger greater investment in local schools and public safety. Low-income residents envision job training, steady employment, free access to the presidential library and tax breaks so longtime residents don't get priced out of their homes.” http://trib.in/2aj4ZqI

LAUNCHED -- new Super PAC Jews for Progress to help Hillary among Jews in swing states -- per the group: “The new Super PAC, a project of the National Jewish Democratic Council, will run a highly targeted campaign in key battleground states, where a shift in the Jewish vote could turn the tide in the presidential election. Ron Klein, a former congressman from south Florida, will serve as its chairman, and Michael Adler, the Florida real estate developer and past chair of NJDC, will serve as treasurer. ... Jews for Progress’ founders, in addition to Klein and Adler, are Fran Katz Watson, the former DNC and Aipac finance director, Steve Paikowsky, another top Dem Party fundraiser, ... Steve Rabinowitz and [Aaron Keyak] of ... public affairs firm Bluelight Strategies, will also run the Super PAC’s day-to-day operations.” Release http://politi.co/2a9cEuk
2016 PLAYERS – “Symone Sanders on Life After Bernie: And why #sheswithher,” by Mikki Halpin in Elle – Sanders is former national press secretary for Bernie -- Q: “Last time we spoke, you told me about some really frustrating experiences you had on the road that you felt were definitely related to being a woman of color. Do you want to talk a little bit about those?” Sanders: “There were multiple instances. There were places where I literally I couldn’t get in. I would go to the door, the staff entrance, and people would say, ‘This is staff only.’ … My breaking point was a time when I had let the event staff know I was having trouble getting in places and asked them if they could just really make an extra effort for this particular day, because it had been a long week. Like, ‘Could you please just let folks know that I’m coming and that I’m black?’” http://bit.ly/2adeBl3
BONUS GREAT WEEKEND READS, curated by Daniel Lippman:
--“A Stark Nuclear Warning,” by Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown in the N.Y. Review of Books, reviewing “My Journey at the Nuclear Brink” by William Perry: “‘Sleepwalking’ is the term historians now use for the stupidities that got European leaders into World War I and for the mess they unleashed at Versailles. And sleepwalking still continues as NATO and Russia trade epithets and build their armies and Moscow and Washington modernize their nuclear overkill. A new cold war.” http://bit.ly/2a6b9gv ... $21.23 on Amazon http://amzn.to/2aD2ZO0 (h/t Longreads.com)

HOLLYWOODLAND – “Jon Stewart’s HBO Show Will Be Animated Cable-News Parody,” by Variety’s Daniel Holloway: “Speaking at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour Saturday, HBO programming president Casey Bloys [said:] ‘The idea is it will be an animated parody of a cable news network with an Onion-like portal’... The project will be structured to allow Stewart to release multiple pieces of short-form content — video and text — through HBO’s digital platforms, but will also include a linear-television element, likely in the form of a half-hour series.” http://bit.ly/2aTvVgy
MEDIAWATCH -- NYT A21, “Russian News Group Walks Tightrope in Covering U.S. Election,” by Michael Grynbaum and Nicholas Fandos: “[Larry] King, the former CNN star who now anchors a prime-time interview show on RT, said that he had never received directions on coverage from the network ... ‘I’m almost expecting Putin to come to America to make a speech,’ Mr. King said … ‘Obviously, Putin wants Trump to be the president. I’ve never heard that before from a Russian president.’ His biggest concern … is that Mr. Trump, whom he has known for decades, has so far declined to appear on his show during this election cycle. ‘Donald Trump is the easiest guy to book in the world,’ said Mr. King, who has said he will probably vote for Mrs. Clinton. ‘He has not responded lately, and I have no reason for it. I’ve always been friends with him, we go back 40 years.’ ‘He keeps saying, ‘next Tuesday, a week from Tuesday,’ Mr. King said. ‘I’m a little disappointed.’” http://nyti.ms/2adsEHt
SPORTS BLINK -- “Nationals acquire closer Mark Melancon from the Pirates,” by WaPo’s Chelsea Janes: “The Washington Nationals filled their need for a late-inning reliever Saturday afternoon, landing Pirates closer Mark Melancon for Felipe Rivero and minor league left-hander Taylor Hearn. The acquisition, which did not cost the Nationals any of their most valued prospects, addresses the biggest question facing the club as it enters the final two months of the season and is perhaps the most significant deadline acquisitions in the team’s 11-year D.C. history.” http://wapo.st/2aqrlG3

WEEKEND WEDDINGS -- Mort Engelberg, a Hollywood producer, “friend to Presidents and First Ladies alike, presidential advance man and F.O.B. (Friend of Bill) wed his longtime girlfriend Helaine on Wednesday in a civil ceremony in LA. The groom was resplendent in khakis and a blue blazer while his bride wore what Engelberg told her was a Hollywood requisite; a pink skirt and tight white sweater top. In addition to producing, among others, ‘Smokey & The Bandit’, ‘The Big Easy’ and Steve McQueen’s final movie, ‘The Hunter’, Engelberg produced the very successful Clinton/Gore bus trips throughout the 1990s [which Hillary and Kaine are paying homage to this weekend] as well as some of the most visually stimulating, significant and memorable Presidential events of the Clinton Administration.” Pic http://politi.co/2aC5UVP

However, when she arrived, a slideshow of photos of the couple started playing on the big screens and ended with a photo of ‘Will You Marry Me?’ written in sand on a beach.
