BREAKING …. JAKE TAPPER EXCLUSIVE: OBAMA SAYS WALMART, APPLE, FORD AND MORE PLEDGE HELP FOR LONG-TERM JOBLESS ... CNN’s Jake Tapper & Sherisse Pham report: - The White House has secured commitments from some of the nation's largest companies, signing on to a plan to boost hiring of the long-term unemployed "What we have done is to gather together 300 companies, just to start with, including, some of the top 50 companies in the country, companies like Walmart, and Apple, Ford and others, to say let's establish best practices," President Barack Obama told CNN chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper in an exclusive interview.
"Because they've been unemployed ... so long, folks are looking at that gap in the resume and they're weeding them out before these folks even get a chance for an interview," said Obama. As the economy slowly recovers from the recession, the number of workers who have not found a job for at least six months or more has grown. "Do not screen people out of the hiring process just because they've been out of work for a long time," said the President.

GEORGIA GOVERNOR APOLOGIZES AS ATLANTA THAWS … Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal apologized to thousands who were stranded on roadways and to parents whose children had to stay overnight in schools after Tuesday's relatively light snowfall. "I accept responsibility for the fact that we did not make preparation early enough to avoid these consequence," he said at a Thursday news conference. The Republican governor, who faces voters again in November, and other public officials in the area have spent two days digging themselves out of an avalanche of criticism over the snarls that resulted when the weather went south. – Tom Watkins
REP. WAXMAN TO RETIRE AT END OF TERM … Rep. Henry Waxman, a longtime Democrat from California, announced Thursday that he won't seek re-election to a 21st term this November. “In 1974, I announced my first campaign for Congress," he said in a statement. "Today, I am announcing that I have run my last campaign. I will not seek reelection to the Congress and will leave after 40 years in office at the end of this year."

Since having joined team Gut Check in October, the question that has frequented our inbox the most is, "Who is Steve Liguori?"
Steve Liguori is one of Gut Check’s earliest followers, and most regular winners to our daily trivia question. He in fact, created a Twitter account in 2012 just so he could answer Gut Check trivia each day.
Steve currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife and three children but was born and raised on Long Island, NY. He works as a health insurance agent for Getinsured.com.
A fun fact about Steve: In his junior year at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, he had the distinction of being able to single-handedly move an entire state conference championship swim meet to a college 85 miles away.
That year, Steve hurt his shoulder and couldn't swim, but he went to the meet to support his team anyway. During the meet, his glasses broke and shattered on the deck of the pool. The pool had to be closed, and the championship meet was moved. 15 years later, the incident still comes up in conversations.
