In GunFAIL, a quiet week almost inevitably gives way to a busy one. During the week of May 8th, 18 people accidentally shot themselves (and five accidentally shot family members), 10 kids were accidentally shot, there were seven accidental gunshot fatalities, and four guns accidentally discharged into the homes and properties of neighbors (including one that went through multiple homes).
Several of this week’s accidents featured a ruthless “efficiency,” of sorts. We regularly keep track of what we sometimes call “home invasion shootings,” that is, incidents in which people accidentally discharge their weapons into a neighbor’s home or property, often through the walls, floors or ceilings of their own homes. In St. George, Utah, some Responsible Gun Owners actually fired a shotgun through their own trailer’s wall, clean through two neighboring trailers, and into the side of a fourth. In Marion, Michigan, our accidental shooter was the maker of custom-built holsters, who managed to accidentally shoot both himself and his sister with a gun he “didn’t realize was loaded.” I guess they don’t teach that safety stuff at holster-making class. And an accident in Guns Everywhere Georgia combined multiple victims with multiple properties: a single bullet struck four people, in two different apartments!
Our title story this week comes from everybody’s favorite weapons experts: the active duty military. Someone got the blanks and the live rounds mixed up ahead of some Army exercises at the National Training Center in the Mojave Desert, where you might think they’d had some practice with these things. And they have! But practice rarely actually makes perfect, and several rounds found their way into one soldier’s rifle, and from there into one multi-million dollar Apache helicopter.
That didn’t come out nearly as badly as it could have, thankfully. But not everybody made out quite so well, as you’ll see in the week’s full list, appearing below.
DETROIT, MI, 5/08/16: Detroit Police say a 9-year-old boy is hospitalized after he was accidentally shot on Detroit’s west side Sunday afternoon. Few details were being released, but the shooting happened shortly before 2:30 PM Sunday in the 17600 block of Faust, said Officer Shanelle Williams, a Detroit Police spokeswoman. Officers found a weapon on the front lawn, after which they determined it had been discharged accidentally — though police are not confirming who may have pulled the trigger. Police have not released the boy’s condition.
BALTIMORE, MD, 5/08/16: A 2-year-old accidentally shot his father over the weekend in Southwest Baltimore, police confirmed. Police said the father was shot in his side, in their home in the 400 block of North Bend Road, in the Westgate neighborhood on Sunday around 11 AM. The boy was not injured, and the father was treated and released from a hospital. It was not clear how the child acquired the weapon. No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
KNOXVILLE, TN, 5/08/16: The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what they say appears to be an accidental shooting in west Knox County that injured one man, Sunday. According to reports, the incident occurred shortly before 3 PM on Hickory Creek Road at Fallen Oaks Lane. Robert Mathis, 32, was shooting at a backstop to check the accuracy of the sites on his weapon, when the ammunition went beyond the backstop, traveling down an embankment and through a wooded area striking a vehicle. Benjamin Fawver, 33, was seated in the vehicle and was struck in the left arm. Fawver’s family told us his arm was on the steering wheel as he was driving on the road, when the bullet flew through the window and into his arm. He was transported to U.T. Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Fawver’s now at home. At the Knoxville shooting range, Tactical Advantage Corp., they say incidents like this one are common this time of the year because people like to get out into their backyards and shoot on their property. But they say people doing that should be conscious of the velocity of their ammunition. They should also be aware of the dynamics of the property they’re shooting on. “The guy that pulled the trigger was lucky it turned out the way it did. Instead of another outcome,” said Bruce Fuller, GM of Tactical Advantage Corp.
WILMORE, KY, 5/08/16: A man in his 80s showed up at a Lexington hospital on Monday night for treatment of a gunshot wound to the chest that happened the day before. Lexington police Lt. Andrew Daugherty said the man, whose name was not provided, was shot accidentally while cleaning a gun and was expected to recover. “I don’t think it’s anything extremely serious,” he said. Lexington police were called to the hospital at 7:21 PM, but after discovering the incident occurred in Wilmore, they turned the case over to officials in Jessamine County, Daugherty said.
JEROME, ID, 5/08/16: What turned out to be an accidental shooting in Jerome Sunday had police thinking at first they may have had a drive-by shooting incident. Police Chief Dan Hall said that at 1:23 AM Sunday there were reports of shots fired in the Jerome County Judicial Annex parking lot on West Main. A suspect vehicle description was sent to area law enforcement Hall said. Soon, the Idaho State Police notified the Jerome authorities they had stopped the vehicle along Washington Street in Twin Falls. When Jerome police arrived in Twin Falls, they soon discovered the person in the vehicle who was actually the victim and had a gunshot wound to the leg. Hall said it’s believed the victim had accidentally discharged the gun when he was attempting to put it away.
MONTEZUMA CO., CO, 5/08/16: 2:48 PM: A man who was being treated for a gunshot wound at Southwest Memorial Hospital explained that he had accidentally shot himself in the leg while unpacking his .22-caliber revolver after a camping trip.
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, 5/09/16: A 64-year old man called for emergency services Monday night after he accidentally shot himself with a handgun inside his home located in the 1100 block of Arnold Drive. Officers arrived and found the man with a gunshot wound to his right leg. He told officers that he was moving the 9 mm handgun and when he grabbed the weapon it accidentally discharged, striking him in the calf. The man was transported to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital by CCFD EMS to be treated for his injuries.
FAYETTEVILLE, NC, 5/09/16: One person was taken to the hospital after an accidental shooting Monday night, Fayetteville police Lt. W. Burgess said. Around 7:15 PM, police responded to a report of an accidental shooting at the Lakeshore Grande apartment complex. The apartment complex on Faith Drive is off of Nix Road near Skibo Road. Police arrived at the scene and found a person with a gunshot wound in the leg in a gray truck. The person was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Burgess said. Burgess said while an investigation into the incident is ongoing, evidence from the crime scene indicated that the shooting was an accident. Around 7:30 PM, detectives were headed to the apartment complex to interview a man who was in the truck when the shooting took place, Burgess said. Police declined to name the person who was shot or how the shooting occurred.
FEDERAL WAY, WA, 5/09/16: A 21-year-old Federal Way man was shot accidentally on Monday morning as he and a group of others were sitting in a car at a mobile home park, police said. The incident unfolded at around 9 AM as the group of people were in the car together in the 3000 block of South 288th Street. Officers and medics responded to the scene, and found the victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His condition was not immediately available. A preliminary investigation found that the victim was riding in a vehicle with several other companions and was accidentally shot in the chest by a 19-year-old Federal Way resident, who was also inside the vehicle. Several people at the scene were detained, including the suspected shooter. The investigation continues.
CHICAGO, IL, 5/09/16: Two teenage brothers were injured in a shooting, one critically—and police say one shot the other. The shooting happened just before 7 PM Monday near 76th and Emerald in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. The 18-year-old boy was shot in the head and transferred in “extremely critical” condition to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. His 16-year-old brother was found a half a mile away, at 73rd and Halsted, with a gun wound to the hip. He was transferred to Advocate Christ Hospital where he is in stable condition. The 16-year-old told police he was trying to shoot himself, but the gun went off and he accidentally shot his brother. A source tells WGN that police recovered two guns. Police are investigating the shooting.
HOT SPRINGS, AR, 5/09/16: A shooting in Hot Springs left one person in critical condition Monday night, and a man arrested later was also taken to the hospital after police said he shot himself while fleeing. Hot Springs police spokesman Cpl. Kirk Zaner said 40-year-old Eric Shaw of Hot Springs was arrested in a nearby Malvern motel and taken to National Park Hospital, where he was treated before being booked into the Garland County jail Tuesday morning. Shaw accidentally shot himself in the leg while putting the gun in his waistband and fleeing from the shooting, Zaner said. Police responding to the report of a shooting on Bayles Street around 8:15 PM found Robert Alexander, 53, shot in his torso and lying in the entrance to the house, according to a news release. Alexander, whose listed residence is at the Bayles Street address, was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in critical condition. Shaw was charged with first-degree battery and had bond set at $100,000, jail records show.
URBANDALE, IA, 5/09/16: Urbandale police have charged a man who they say lied about a drive-by shooting. Police where called to a home shortly after noon on Monday on the report of a drive-by shooting and found 19-year-old Zachary Dunblazier outside with a minor gunshot wound to his leg. Dunblazier was taken to the hospital for treatment of a minor injury, and after questioning by police detectives, they found his version of what happened didn’t match the evidence. Detectives determined Dunblazier accidentally shot himself in the leg. He is charge with making a false police report.
DETROIT, MI, 5/10/16: Detroit police say a child has died after she accidentally shot herself with her grandma's gun. Family at the scene says 5-year-old Mariah Davis shot herself late Tuesday night. We're told the girl was upstairs playing at the time of the incident, while her grandmother was downstairs cooking. Police say she found the gun underneath a pillow and accidentally shot herself. Detroit police were called to the 19700 block of Oakfield around midnight Wednesday. That's on the city's west side, between Pembroke & St. Martins just east of the Southfield Freeway. Two other children were home at the time of the incident, but they were not hurt. So far, no arrests have been made, but Detroit police do continue to investigate.
SHREVEPORT, LA, 5/10/16: Relatives say 17-year-old Joshua Clark loved his family. He was a student at C.E. Byrd High school and described as loveable, quiet and adventurous. The family held a candle light vigil to remember Josh. They are still in shock. "It's been so surreal. It's just unbelievable. It doesn't seem like he's gone," said Clark's cousin. Barbara James. Shreveport Police say Josh was shot inside a car parked on the shoulder of Barrett Street at the intersection of Wilkinson Street. They say it's believed that 18-year-old DaMarcia Clark was mishandling a handgun and it fired. The two teenagers were uncle and nephew. "Somehow it went off. It's just accident. It just hit his uncle and right now we're just praying for both of them because even though he's gone they was close. They was thick as thieves," said James. Family friend, Coreen Wilson says Josh had a great relationship with his mother and she's taking it hard. "She still doesn't believe that it's true. She just thinks it's a nightmare. She just can't believe it. She's just in a total, total shock," said Wilson. Family and friends are now celebrating Josh's life as they push through this difficult time. "Pray for the family in a time of need because they really need it and they just didn't lose one person. They lost two today," said Wilson. The family set up an account to help with Josh's burial expenses.
DECATUR, GA, 5/10/16: Detectives say they believe a single bullet struck three people in a DeKalb County apartment complex late Tuesday night: a man, a woman and a four-month-old baby. Police say the shooting happened at about 10:40 PM inside two different units at the Windrush apartment complex on Kensington Road near Decatur. They say 23-year-old resident Derico Clark was handling a gun inside his apartment when he accidentally pulled the trigger and shot himself in the hand. The bullet continued on and struck a 21 year-old woman in the leg, police say. The bullet then traveled through the wall and into a neighboring apartment where it struck the baby boy in the back. The baby’s mother says her son is expected to make a full recovery. The bullet did not penetrate into any of his organs. It was lodged beneath his skin until a doctor was able to remove it. “I’m mad as hell,” says the baby’s grandmother Willie Ushry. Ushry says she had warned her neighbors to stop playing around with guns. “And now they shot a baby,” she says. Clark and the woman who was shot in the leg are both recovering from their wounds, police say. Clark will face a charge of reckless conduct in the case.
TRENTON, GA, 5/11/16: Dade County Sheriff Ray Cross tells us that a Sand Mountain man is being treated for an accidental shooting on Wednesday morning. 40-year old Charles Mooney was being transported to the hospital around 9 AM. The sheriff says he was shot while cleaning his weapon at his home on NewHome Road. He says Mooney was in stable condition on the way to the hospital.
IRVINE, KY, 5/11/16: Troopers responded to Stacy Lane in Estill County on Wednesday afternoon for a shooting. Two people inside the home had been shot in the leg. Both were transported to UK Hospital with minor injuries. KSP said after further investigation it was determined that the gun had been fired accidentally. Troopers said that one bullet hit both victims in the leg. One person inside the home was charged with tampering with physical evidence.
LEWIS AND CLARK CO., MT, 5/11/16: Lewis and Clark County officials have released the name of a 31-year-old man who died of an apparent accidental gunshot wound. Undersheriff Dave Rau says Casey L. McCormick of Wolf Creek died Wednesday morning. Rau says McCormick and three others were in a pickup truck going to a job site northeast of Craig when the .45-caliber gun discharged, hitting the victim in the shoulder. Coroner Mickey Nelson says another person was handling the gun when it went off. Rau says they're still interviewing the other occupants of the pickup truck and the investigation continues.
MONROE, LA, 5/11/16: A Monroe couple were booked into Ouachita Correctional Center on obstruction of justice charges following an accidental shooting Thursday night. Monroe Police Department officers responded to a call concerning a possible gunshot victim at 1002 Park Ave. Officers reported that a sleeping victim was struck in the abdomen by a small-caliber bullet and had to undergo surgery. Upon investigation, officers found a bullet hole in the ceiling above the victim's bed. Officers obtained a search warrant for the upstairs apartment at the address and saw a bullet hole in the floor. According to the arrest affidavit, the resident of the apartment, Cole Meche, 19, said he accidentally fired the shot. Meche and his girlfriend, Hannah Tribe, 19, are accused of providing false information to officers during an initial interview and attempting to hide the gun. Tribe reportedly said she and Meche had discussed getting rid of the gun. Arrest records report Tribe as stating the gun could either be hidden in her purse or the vacuum cleaner. A 9 mm gun later was recovered from the residence. Tribe was booked on a felony charge of obstruction of justice. Meche was booked on felony charges of obstruction of justice and a misdemeanor charge of negligent injuring.
ST. GEORGE, UT, 5/11/16: A St. George man and woman were arrested after accidentally firing a shotgun inside their trailer Wednesday before fleeing the scene. The shotgun round reportedly traveled through multiple occupied trailers in the trailer park. At approximately 3 AM, officers responded to a weapons offense at Hillside Palms RV and Mobile Home Park located at 215 N. 600 East in St George, according to a probable cause statement filed by the St. George Police Department in support of the arrests. It was reported that a bullet from a gunshot had come from inside one trailer and traveled through two other trailers before hitting the outside of a fourth trailer, according to court documents. All four trailers were occupied when the round was shot. However, no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting. The trailer where the shotgun was allegedly fired belonged to 28-year-old Matthew Joseph Miano and 26-year-old Kasey Ann-Marie Ferguson, the arresting officer wrote in a sworn statement. Miano and Ferguson left the scene before officers arrived. A warrant was issued to search Miano’s and Ferguson’s trailer. During a search of the trailer, authorities located a green shotgun slug on the floor along with magazines for a .45 caliber handgun, the report stated. Authorities also located methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the trailer. A short while later, it was reported that a shotgun had been located on the road near the area, according to the statement. The shotgun was collected by police as found property. On Thursday, officers located and interviewed Miano. “Matthew admitted under Miranda that he was showing Kasey how to use his shotgun when he accidentally shot it in his trailer,” the officer wrote in the statement. “Matthew said he panicked and left the area before officers arrived.” Miano described his shotgun as being the shotgun that was located near his residence in the roadway, according to the statement. Miano told police that after he had discharged his shotgun, he took his .45 caliber handgun and hid it in the desert. Miano later showed authorities where the handgun was located and it was recovered by police. Ferguson was also interviewed by police and she told the same story about the shotgun accidentally going off inside the trailer. “Kasey also admitted to using methamphetamine and heroin inside the trailer,” the officer stated. The duo was arrested and transported to the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility. The Washington County Attorney’s Office filed an information in 5th District Court accusing Miano and Ferguson of third-degree felony possession of a firearm by a restricted person; two class A misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance; and class B misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Miano was charged with an additional class B misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm within city limits. Judge Eric A. Ludlow, of the 5th District Court, ordered $7,500 bail each for Miano’s and Ferguson’s release pending trial. Ferguson was found indigent by the court during her initial court appearance Friday and will be represented by court-appointed attorney Douglas Terry, while Miano waived his right to counsel. As this report is published, the two remain in police custody, according to booking information. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH, 5/12/16: A mother told police a gun was shot in her home and her 19-year-old son was injured, according to a police report. University Heights police reported the mother called 911 and said she was outside with her son's dad and they heard a loud noise. She ran inside the home as a 15-year-old was running outside. The report stated the 19-year-old was found by police at a residence on Baintree Road with a bullet wound. He was taken to University Hospitals by the University Heights Fire Department. Police said they learned the 15-year-old accidentally shot the 19-year-old. Officials are trying to confirm who owned the gun. Police learned both the father and 19-year-old owned guns. The incident is under investigation.
HILLIARD, OH, 5/12/16: The woman calling from the Hilliard home was distraught and frantic as she told the 911 dispatcher Thursday afternoon that her 10-year-old grandson had shot himself in the head. "Please hurry," the woman said. The boy was unconscious and not breathing, she said, adding, "I think he's gone." The woman was performing CPR on Colin Lucas Fraley when Hilliard police and Norwich Township Fire paramedics arrived at the home in the 5100 block of Scioto Darby Road shortly after the call came in at 4 PM. Colin was rushed to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead soon after. Hilliard Police Chief Robert Fisher said that officers still need to investigate and search the home before they could say what happened. During the 911 call, the grandmother said she was outside, heard a gunshot and ran inside to find Colin mortally injured. She said the boy had accidentally shot himself with his stepfather's gun. County records show the home is owned by Trisa Sauber, Colin's mother, and her husband, Benjamin Sauber. They weren't home when the shooting occurred, though Colin's 7-year-old sister was. She was unhurt. Colin was a fifth-grader at Scioto Darby Elementary School, just down the road from his home. Across the street early Thursday evening, 8-year-old Izabella Thomas kneeled on her lawn and prayed for her young neighbor. Her mother, Christina Trago, said she wasn't home when the shooting occurred across the road. "It's unbelievably sad," Trago said.
TOLEDO, OH, 5/12/16: Police say after further investigation, Darnell Glover shot himself accidentally. ----------ORIGINAL--------— Authorities are searching for a suspect after a Toledo man was shot in the leg while driving in the Old West End. The Toledo Police Department was dispatched to the area of Scottwood and Islington on a shots fired call around 12:43 PM Thursday. Once on scene, police say several shell casings were found in the street and witnesses were questioned. While on scene, dispatch informed the units that a victim showed up at St. Vincent's Hospital with a gunshot wound related to the scene. The victim, Darnell Glover, told police he was driving on Islington and stopped at the stop sign at the Scottwood intersection. Glover said a black Ford, possible an F-150, pulled up next to him and the passenger opened fire. No further description of the suspects was provided. Glover is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. The investigation continues.
LAKE HAVASU, AZ, 5/12/16: Police are investigating an incident in which a Lake Havasu City man was accidentally shot in the leg on Thursday afternoon. Alexander Sullivan was transported to the hospital for leg injuries after Tirrell Pinkett allegedly shot him in the leg with a firearm. The two men’s stories didn’t add up when officers questioned them, said Sgt. Kirk Cesena, Havasu Police Department’s spokesman. “These two are apparently friends,” Cesena said. “They both said it was an accident, but there were differences in their stories. It’s still an ongoing investigation.” Pinkett was arrested earlier this year on charges of assault, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and aggravated domestic violence after he allegedly brandished a pellet gun during an argument. “This time it was more than a pellet gun, I can tell you that,” Cesena said. At the time of that incident, it was Pinkett’s third report of alleged domestic violence in which he was involved. Sullivan was also arrested earlier this month for drug possession.
BOONE CO., IN, 5/12/16: Authorities say a 49-year-old man accidentally killed himself while target shooting on his rural property in central Indiana. The Boone County Sheriff's Office says deputies found Lester Wethington face down after they were called Thursday to the site near Lebanon. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The department says investigators believe Wethington went out to target shoot in his backyard when he apparently tripped and the weapon fired a round that killed him. Investigators say the shooting appears accidental.
EVANSVILLE, IN, 5/13/16: Evansville Police say a man was riding his bike in the 2100 block of Jefferson Avenue around 1:45 PM Friday when he somehow managed to shoot himself in the right leg. Police believe the gun was either in a pant pocket or his waist band. The man then crawled to a nearby home and the home owner called police. While police say the man gave them a fake name, we're told he did admit to accidentally shooting himself. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
GREENVILLE, SC, 5/13/16: One student at Southside High School accidentally shot themselves in the school cafeteria Friday morning and two students will be charged after the gun was brought to the school. The Greenville County School District says the student was shot at 8:40 AM. The student was conscious and talking when they were taken to the hospital by EMS. They don’t think the injury is life threatening. The Sheriff’s Office said during Friday’s news conference that the gun was inside the backpack of another student and it fired and struck that student. Another student, 17-year-old Braylin Scott was arrested and charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, Carrying a Weapon on School Property, and Disturbing School. According to warrants, Braylin took the gun after the accidental shooting. The injured student will be charged with the same charges, according to deputies. Police set up a perimeter, searched all students and placed Southside High School on lockdown. All students were secured inside the building, according to deputies. Blythe Elementary, Grove Elementary and MT Anderson Support Center are all off lockdown. Thomas E. Kerns Elementary administrators were told by law enforcement they are cleared, but have chosen to stay on partial lockdown and not allow students out for recess. Deputies did a complete search of the school, including the rooftops. School officials say there is no longer danger or concern. They will dismiss in a manner that allows full accountability. They want to make sure every child is accounted for. The school says Southside High will dismiss students now to parents or guardians with proper credentials. Parents will need to enter through the school’s main entrance on Frontage Road. The school will then dismiss student drivers.
HUBERT, NC, 5/13/16: Investigators responding to a call of an accidental shooting end up arresting a teen for having a gun that deputies say had its serial number scratched off. Onslow County Deputies responded to a call on May 13th to the area of Yaupon Drive for a reported accidental shooting. The victim refused to press charges on the shooter, describing the events as accidental. Prior to the deputies' arrival, the suspect left the scene; however, the handgun used in the shooting and an additional handgun were recovered after a search of the scene by detectives. The handgun used in the shooting was discovered to have had its serial number scratched off. Deputies arrested 18-year-old Jourden Tairee Shepard of Skipping Stone Lane in Jacksonville and charged him with possession of a firearm with altered serial number. Shepard was released under an unsecured $5,000 bond.
BRANSON, MO, 5/13/16: According to a City of Branson media alert, a man has died after an apparent accidental shooting. Around 8:30 PM Friday night, City of Branson police officers were called to the 500 block of College to investigate a shooting. When the police arrived, they found 19-year-old Richard Alvarez the Fourth. Despite their efforts, paramedics and emergency rescue personnel were unsuccessful in reviving the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Taney County coroner. MORE: Richard Alvarez IV died from an bullet wound to the back caused by a hand gun that was operated by his twin brother, according to Taney County Coroner Kevin Tweedy on Monday. The incident is believed to be involuntary manslaughter and the case will be presented to the prosecuting attorney office, according to Branson Interim Police Chief Stan Dobbins. Details of the shooting are still under review. Dobbins declined to name the shooter because charges had not been filed, although several online sources show the twin’s name is Rene Alvarez.
CYPRESS, TX, 5/13/16: Investigators say a driver who was shot attempted to avoid road debris before crashing his car in northwest Harris County. The man was injured last night on the Northwest Freeway near the Grand Parkway. Witnesses say the driver's car suddenly went off the highway near the Houston Premium Outlets. Deputies say it appears now the man swerved to miss something in the road, all while holding a gun in his hand. "There didn't appear to be any type of road rage or an altercation that occurred between another vehicle," HCSO Deputy Thomas Gilliland says. The man was shot in the head. He is now fighting for his life at a hospital in critical condition. It is not certain whether he accidentally shot himself or was shot by someone else. Investigators are still investigating.
LINCOLN, NE, 5/13/16: A man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries late Friday night after shooting himself in the foot. Sgt. David Munn of the Lincoln Police Department said 46-year-old Raul Stooksbury was highly intoxicated when he shot a round from his handgun up in the air for fun. When he held the gun down to the ground, he accidentally discharged a bullet into the top of his right foot. After receiving treatment, Stooksbury was cited and released for unlawful discharge of a weapon in the city, Munn said.
SHARPSVILLE, IN, 5/14/16: A Sharpsville juvenile is expected to survive after being shot Saturday as another juvenile was unloading a handgun. On Saturday, Tipton County Sheriff’s deputies, the Sharpsville Town Marshal, Sharpsville Fire Department and Howard County paramedics responded to a report of a single gunshot victim at a residence in Sharpsville, where a male juvenile was located with a single gunshot wound to the upper right shoulder. The juvenile victim was transported from the scene to Community Howard Regional Health and later flown to I.U. Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis to receive treatment. According to a Tipton County Sheriff’s Department press release, the victim is expected to survive, but was still receiving treatment as of Monday morning. After questioning the shooter, another juvenile male, investigators determined he discharged the gun while attempting to unload it. The gun was recovered at the scene. While malicious intent is not suspected, an investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to the release.
DENVER, CO, 5/14/16: Denver police found a man with a gunshot wound Saturday night, after he and others ran from officers into Ruby Hill Park at West Florida Avenue. Two or three people ran from a curfew patrol assigned to the park, which closes at 10 PM, said Ron Piyasena, police spokesman. Police followed and found a man who had a gunshot wound. "The officers found that person as they were checking in the park after he was running. He may have discharged the firearm," and shot himself accidentally, Piyasena said.
BATON ROUGE, LA, 5/14/16: The Baton Rouge Police Department are searching for the owner of a gun after an accidental shooting Saturday. According to police, a 6-year-old boy was playing with a gun at a home in the 4300 block of Denham Street when the gun went off hitting his 3-year-old sister in the face. The 3-year-old girl was taken to a local hospital. She is expected to survive her injuries. Police say they are looking for a suspect who fled the scene. They believe that person is the owner of the gun. The shooting remains under investigation.
OPALOUSAS, LA, 5/14/16: Two suspects are in police custody after an armed robbery Saturday in Opelousas. On May 14, 2016 Opelousas Police responded to a call on the 300 block of W. Bertheaud Avenue around midnight. The caller indicated that two suspects had robbed someone of a cell phone at gunpoint, according to Police Chief Donald Thompson. Thompson said within minutes, officers were able to locate the two suspects and one of them attempted to flee the scene, firing a weapon in the process. No one was injured in the altercation and both suspects were arrested without further incident soon after. It was later found that Justin Simien attempted to discard a .380 pistol he had in his possession, which caused it to accidentally discharge. Simien, 20, was booked on armed robbery and obstruction of justice charges. The other suspect, Kenny Jones, 25, was arrested and charged with armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm and possession of Schedule I drugs.
JACKSON CO., FL, 5/14/16: According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded Saturday to a shooting incident near the Compass Lake Community. Deputies report they found the body of a 14-year-old boy who had a gunshot wound. Through their investigation, deputies learned the victim and a 15-year-old friend obtained a shotgun. They say while handling the gun, the 14-year-old accidentally discharged the gun, which resulted in his death. Officials say this is an ongoing death investigation.
FORT IRWIN, CA, 5/14/16: A large training exercise for Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers in Southern California came to a halt Saturday morning when an infantryman shot an Army Apache helicopter with live rounds. No one was hurt in the incident, but the infantryman’s bullets punctured the JBLM-based helicopter four times and prompted a suspension of the exercise at the National Training Center in the Mojave Desert, said Ken Drylie, a spokesman for the training center.
