The beat goes on. During the GunFAIL week beginning March 27th, 21 people accidentally shot themselves, seven people were accidentally shot to death, and five kids were accidentally shot. And that’s a relatively light week. After all, only three people accidentally shot family members, and we only had one each of our other familiar GunFAIL types—that is one cop GunFAIL, one military GunFAIL, one gun accidentally fired while cleaning it, one hunting accident, and one person miraculously shot by a gun that everyone was pretty sure “wasn’t loaded.” Amazing how that happens.
There were three incidents of particular note during the week, though. The first is from San Luis Obispo, California, where first responders once again found themselves endangered by the presence of a gun in a home to which they’d been dispatched for a medical emergency. Firefighters responding to a medical alarm entered the home, announced their presence, and found the two elderly residents asleep. When they awoke, they told the firefighters it must have been a false alarm, and all seemed well. But somehow, while the firefighters were leaving the home, one of the residents became confused about the situation and decided that the firefighters they had just spoken with were actually intruders. She grabbed her gun, loaded it, accidentally fired it, and then ran after the firefighters, firing her gun in the air. The couple’s daughter arrived shortly afterward and disarmed her mother.
If you have elderly relatives who keep a gun at home, you might want to check in with them from time to time, to see whether—as is sometimes the case with operating motor vehicles—their gun might pose a danger to them or others. You don’t want to find out that they’ve “become confused,” say, next Halloween. Or when the neighbor comes to borrow a cup of sugar. Or for that matter, the day you come to visit to see if they’re still okay with that firearm.
The second notable story of the week: A concealed carry permit holder took his gun with him while walking his dog, and somehow managed to drop and lose it along the way, without noticing. And of course, it just so happens that the place it fell out was … on the playground of the local elementary school. Because why not take a gun to the local school playground while your dog takes a dump on it? Luckily, a teacher found the gun just before school started. But thanks for “keeping us safe,” Mr. Concealed Carrier!
The last of this week’s highlighted events: A Florida man (of course) shopping in a local store was seen “fidgeting with something in his pocket,” which shortly revealed itself to be a (previously) concealed gun. It fired into the floor, shattering tiles and injuring another shopper with the shrapnel. The Responsible Gun Owner, naturally, ran off without being identified. “Safe” again!

MEMPHIS, TN, exact date unknown: A 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after police said his mom accidentally shot him. Police said the son had run away from home, and when he came back that same night, the mother, identified as Sherry Gray, took him in her car to go to his girlfriend’s house where he had been that day. Gray told police her son became upset and hit her during the drive. The son tried to get out of the car, but Gray took out a handgun and shot him in the shoulder, police said. Gray told police she just wanted to scare him, and she didn’t mean to shoot him. This happened at Golden Park and Sandy Park, police said. A brother took the mom and son to St. Francis, and the son was then transported to Regional Medical Center. Officers found the gun at the scene; police said it had 12 live rounds as well as an extra magazine with 15 live rounds and one spent round. Gray was taken to the police station, and she has been charged with aggravated assault/domestic violence. The son has not been identified.
GARDINER, ME, 3/27/16: Gardiner police are investigating a Sunday night incident in which they believe a local man accidentally shot himself in the leg in a Pleasant Street apartment. Two Gardiner and two Maine State Police officers responded to an apartment complex on Pleasant Street to investigate a report of an accident at 9:56 PM Sunday. When they arrived, according to Gardiner Police Chief James Toman, they found a 31-year-old Gardiner man outside who had suffered a gunshot wound. Toman said the shooting took place inside an apartment, where the man was with several other people. He was unarmed and outside when police arrived. He was taken by Gardiner Rescue to MaineGeneral Medical Center where he was treated for a leg injury and released, Toman said. Toman declined to identify the man because the investigation is ongoing, and he could face charges related to the incident. Toman said alcohol was involved. “At this point the investigation led us to believe it is a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Toman said. “Indications are it was accidental.” Toman said at no time was the general public in danger because of the incident. Police took possession of the weapon, a semi-automatic handgun.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA, 3/27/16: An elderly San Luis Obispo resident mistook firefighters responding to a medical alarm as home intruders and fired two shots from her revolver. No one was hurt in the incident and no one was arrested, but police submitted a report to prosecutors who will decide whether to charge the woman with negligent discharge of a firearm. At about 2 AM Sunday, San Luis Obispo fire personnel responded to a personal medical alarm activation in the 100 block of Del Norte Way. The fire department has pre-arranged agreements with citizens that approves emergency crews’ entrance to their homes should the residents’ medical alarm activate, according to a San Luis Obispo Police Department news release. Firefighters entered the home, announced their presence, and found two elderly residents asleep inside. They spoke with the couple and determined the activation was a false alarm. As they left the home, firefighters heard a single gunshot from inside the house, and seconds later the female resident exited the house and fired a single shot in the air. Police responded to the house and found a daughter of the couple had already arrived and secured the gun from her mother. Police later determined the resident was disoriented when she awoke to the welfare check and, believing burglars were inside her home, grabbed her gun, accidentally firing a round while she loaded it. She then ran outside and fired a round into the air. Police said there was no indication the woman tried to shoot directly at fire personnel. The district attorney’s office will ultimately decide if a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm is appropriate.
SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP, OH, 3/27/16: A Lima Police Department officer was recovering from a gunshot wound to his left hand after he accidentally shot himself while off duty over the weekend, Shawnee Township Police Department reported. The officer, Scott Leland, was clearing a 9 mm handgun of ammunition inside his home off Fort Amanda Road at 6 PM Sunday when the accident happened, according to Shawnee Township Fire Department records. Leland, 51, was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center by ambulance, according to records. The injury was not life-threatening, Shawnee Township Police Chief Mike Keith said. No one else was injured. Leland gave a full statement on the accident and was forthcoming explaining how it happened, Keith said. The weapon was not his service firearm that he carries on the job, Keith said. Leland has been on the Lima Police Department since May 26, 1993. He has worked as a detective and most recently was assigned to investigate computer crimes.
BAKERSFIELD, VT, 3/27/16: Scott E. Noel, age 22, passed away accidentally while cleaning his gun collection at his home in Bakersfield on Sunday, March 27, 2016. He was born in St. Albans on July 8, 1993 the son of Mary (Murray) Westcom and Kevin Noel. Scott was a 2011 graduate of MVU in Swanton and the past three years he has been employed in the receiving department at Century Arms in St. Albans. Scott was passionate about anything to do with guns from gun-smithing and shooting to collecting and was an advocate and believer and the Second Amendment ‘Right to Bear Arms.’ He also liked to tinker on and fix cars and trucks (especially his Jeep), and cooking.
MACON, GA, exact date unknown: A woman accidentally shot herself while she was looking at a gun in a Macon gas station bathroom. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says 27-year-old Janetta Harden shot herself in the shoulder with a gun she was thinking of buying at the Circle K at 3802 Northside Drive. She met the person she was going to buy the gun from and took it into the bathroom to look at it. She went to Medical Center, Navicent Health to be treated. She’s in stable condition and it is not life threatening. No one else was injured. Bibb County Sheriff’s investigators are still looking into what happened.
MACON, GA, exact date unknown: A woman was accidentally shot when a gun discharged at 232 Lilly Avenue in Macon. According to a news release, 60-year-old Shirley Hill was shot when her 53-year-old friend Timothy dropped a gun while handling it, causing it to fire. Hill was shot in the leg and taken to a local hospital. She’s listed in stable condition. Hill says she will not press any charges because it was an accident.
DOUGLAS, GA, 3/28/16: Douglas city leaders come together Tuesday evening to talk about the safety of the city after a 14-year-old girl was arrested for the shooting death of an 18-year old boy. The shooting victim's family is searching for answers. "I don't know who done this, but he was a nice boy,” said Nicole Paulk, Victim’s Sister. “He was my brother. He was my pride and joy," The Paulk Family is grieving the loss of 18-year-old Traveon Paulk. Police say Paulk was shot in the chest by a 14-year-old girl with a pistol in the 900 block of South Coffee avenue Monday night before 10:00 PM. "My momma just got through talking to him on the phone, on the phone,” said Paulk. “She told him to come home. He said he was alright." The Douglas Police chief held a news conference to talk about the shooting. He says investigators are trying to figure out if the shooting was an accident. "The original call dispatched from 911 was of an accidental shooting,” said Chief Gary Casteloes, Douglas Police Department. Police say they're interviewing witnesses and that the 14-year-old could face additional charges. "She knows more than what she's saying and she needs to really tell the truth so we can get to the bottom of this and get justice,” said Sylvia Lee, the boy’s aunt. Family members are calling for the violence to stop. "Somebody has to speak up in this community because we're tired of the killing,” said Francine Thornton, a relative. "It just don't make no sense,” said Michael Paulk, another relative. “Put the guns down." They're also hoping the community will come forward with answers. "Just please come and tell us because my mama ain't gone be able to sleep, but I know she got justice,” said Paulk. "She cannot never get her child back and it's sad,” said Lee. The 14-year-old girl is currently in the Regional Youth Detention Center in Waycross charged with Involuntary Manslaughter.
COVINGTON CO., AL, 3/28/16: The Covington County Sheriff's Office confirms a turkey hunter's body was found shortly after he went missing on Monday. The sheriff's office identified him as Jonathan Hugh Sellers, 67, from the Red Level area. He was reported missing while hunting turkeys off County Road 21 south of Red Level. Covington County deputies River Falls police officers responded to the call shortly before noon. They used K-9 units to search the area. Chief Deputy David Anderson said the dogs led them to Sellers's body in a nearby ravine about an hour later. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Anderson said Sellers appeared to have fallen into the ravine, which caused his gun to discharge. He was struck in the upper area of his body. The sheriff's office investigator and an officer from the law enforcement section of the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division ruled the death as an accident. Advanced EMS, the Sheriff's Posse, deputies, the 22nd Judicial Drug Task Force and the Opp Fire Department assisted in the removal of the body.
SHREVEPORT, LA, 3/28/16: A man was accidentally shot in the foot Monday night near a Shreveport fire station. It happened around 10:45 PM in the 2000 block of David Raines Road near Shreveport Fire Station 6. The victim told police his friend was loading his handgun when it accidentally discharged and hit him in the foot. The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No charges were filed.
ROCKY MOUNT, NC, 3/28/16: A Rocky Mount teenager was charged Monday in connection with shooting his friend earlier that day. Qadarus Javon Grimes, 16, of the 300 block of Woodland Avenue in Rocky Mount, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a handgun by a minor, and discharging a firearm in the city limits. Grimes was jailed in Nash County under a $15,000 secured bond. According to police reports, authorities responded shortly after 10 AM Monday to a report of a 16-year-old male with an accidental gunshot wound. The victim was treated at Nash General Hospital and released. Authorities said the victim, Grimes and others were riding in a vehicle on Nashville Road when the handgun discharged. An investigation into the incident revealed the handgun had been reported stolen.
LEWISVILLE, TX, 3/29/16: Lewisville Police are investigating an accidental shooting that happened around 11:30 AM Tuesday morning near the Flower Mound border. Police believe the victim was shot in the face accidentally with a rifle at a home in the 1600 block of Glenhill, near Garden Ridge and College. For some reason someone at the location decided to drive the victim to the hospital instead of calling for an ambulance. They made it as far as the intersection of Garden Ridge and Main Street. Flower Mound police originally responded to the call, and Flower Mound paramedics treated the victim. The victim was taken by helicopter to a hospital.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA, 3/29/16: A man is recovering after an accidental shooting in Newport News. Police say emergency communications received a call at 12:02 AM Tuesday, reporting a man who had accidentally shot himself in the leg on Colony Road. When officers arrived, they found a 55-year-old Yorktown man who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his right thigh. The man told police he had just gotten into his vehicle when the incident happened. He stated he attempted to remove his weapon and holster from his pocket when his finger accidentally engaged the trigger, causing the gun to go off. His adult son, who was nearby, heard the shot and provided medical aid until medics arrived to the scene. The man was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury.
MORGANTOWN, WV, 3/29/16: Police have determined that a woman injured in a Tuesday morning, March 29, shooting in the Sabraton area shot herself by accident. According to a Morgantown Police Department news release: Officers responded to Ruby Memorial Hospital after a patient was reported with a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening. Further investigation revealed that the shooting incident occurred while in a parked vehicle in an isolated area along the side of Eljadid Street in Morgantown. The victim was identified as 32-year-old Monongalia County resident Betty Jo Strosnider. No criminal charges are anticipated.
BELOIT, WI, 3/29/16: A Beloit man was arrested after he apparently accidentally shot himself in the leg and then went to the hospital. Shawn M. Rouse, 27, was arrested at 3:45 PM Tuesday for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to Beloit Police Sgt. Matt Donovan. Donovan said police aren’t sure if he shot himself in a car of in a home, but a car with blood evidence in it was found in the 1400 block of Hull Avenue.
FAYETTEVILLE, NC, 3/29/16: A Fort Bragg soldier who said he was shot in the foot during a parking lot scuffle concocted the story, Fayetteville police said Thursday. Adrian Little, 30, of the 1000 block of Wood Creek Drive, was charged with filing a false police report, discharging a firearm in the city limits and resisting arrest. All of the charges are misdemeanors, said Officer Antoine Kincade, a police spokesman. Little told police that about 9:30 AM Tuesday he was walking to his car when a man called his name. Little said the two scuffled and a gun discharged, striking him in the foot. The man ran away, Little told police. Little was treated and released at Womack Army Medical Center. Investigators recovered shell casings at the scene that matched Little's .22-caliber pistol, Kincade said. No other shell casings were found. Bail was set at $1,000.
ST. LOUIS, MO, 3/30/16: A stolen gun was found after a man reportedly accidentally shot himself early Wednesday morning. The 28-year-old man was in the 4600 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive around 12:35 AM when he accidentally discharged the firearm, striking himself in the hand and thigh, police said. When police arrived, they discovered the firearm was reported stolen. Authorities said warrants will be applied for. The suspect was taken to the hospital and listed in serious, but stable condition. A 25-year-old man who was with the suspect at the time of the incident was found to have active bench warrants. The investigation is ongoing.
NEW ORLEANS, LA, 3/30/16: An Algiers woman is facing a negligent homicide charge for accidentally shooting her boyfriend with a gun she believed was unloaded. Ebony Harmon was arrested after fatally shooting her boyfriend at a home in the 2100 block of Springbrook Lane, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Around 5 PM, police were called to the Algiers apartment, where the 25-year-old victim had been shot inside his home. "According to Harmon, the two were playing with a weapon when the victim told her to shoot him. Believing the gun was not loaded, Harmon told detectives that she pulled the trigger. However, the gun was loaded, and as a result, the victim sustained a fatal gunshot wound," said a statement from police. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, UT, 3/30/16: A 75-year-old concealed weapon permit holder was walking his dog recently when he dropped his loaded .22-caliber Beretta on the playground of Oakdale Elementary and didn't notice it was missing until he got home. Fortunately, a teacher found the gun before a student did. She turned it into the office, where Principal Kierstin Draper called the police. Cottonwood Heights Police Chief Robbie Russo said the gun owner had called police earlier to report he had lost his gun during his walk, so they easily connected the weapon at the nearby Sandy school to its owner. Russo was so upset about the incident that he gave a report to the Cottonwood Heights City Council last week. His department sent the case to the Salt Lake County district attorney's office, which concluded no law was violated and declined to file charges. Russo expressed frustration that the city cannot bar firearms being carried on school grounds because the pro-gun Utah Legislature has passed laws allowing weapon holders to pack there. Russo said the gun may have been dropped on the playground as early as 6:30 AM on March 30. The teacher found the gun at about 8 AM, before classes started. "I'm glad a kid didn't find it first," Russo said. "We might have had an entirely different outcome."
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL, 3/30/16: A 16-year-old is facing a weapons charge for a shooting that sent his 14-year-old sister to the hospital. Port St. Lucie police arrested the boy for possession of a firearm by a minor and violation of probation. Police responded to the home on SE Sims Circle Wednesday night after receiving a report of a shooting. Investigators said the boy fired a .357 handgun in his bedroom. The bullet went through the wall. Fragments hit his sister, causing superficial wounds to her arm and chest. Investigators learned that after the shooting the boy tried to hide the gun. Police, with the help of a K-9, found the gun across the street. The boy initially said the gunfire came from a drive-by shooting, according to police. Investigators said the evidence didn't back his story. Crime scene investigators used a laser to determine the path of the bullet and concluded he was in a chair at the time of the shooting. The girl was treated at the hospital.
WEST PALM BEACH, FL, 3/31/16: A man was injured when a gun accidentally discharged at a store in West Palm Beach Thursday afternoon. Police say a young man was ‘fidgeting with something in his pocket’ when the gun fired. A bullet struck a tile and a fragment from the tile hit a customer, according to police. The injury to the customer was not serious. The incident happened at a store at 2121 N Tamarind Avenue. The person with the gun ran off. Police believe the shooting was accidental.
NEW CASTLE, PA, 3/31/16: New Castle police say a man is expected to be discharged from the hospital Friday after accidentally shooting himself Thursday. Police chief Bobby Salem said that DeAngelo Brown, 19, of 806 Harbor St., suffered a gunshot wound to the left thigh around 9 PM in the neighborhood of East Washington and Lathrop streets. According to a police report, Brown told officers that he was walking through an alley and found a gun lying on the ground, and he picked it up to look at it. He said it fell on the ground, and it fired hitting him in the upper leg. Brown said several other people were with him with the gun fired, according to the report. The police account says that two other males who went to the hospital said Brown had called them on his phone and asked them to pick him up from Bell Avenue and take him to the hospital. They did not know how he had gotten from the East Side to Bell Avenue, they told officers. Brown was flown from Jameson Hospital to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. A family member advised police that he was to be released Friday, Salem said. Police reported they checked the area on the East Side for a gun but did not find one.
RALEIGH, NC, 3/31/16: A man suffered a gun shot wound to his leg Thursday night in Raleigh, police confirmed. The shooting occurred around 9:10 PM on Nesbit Court off Dansey Drive, just north of the U.S. 1 and U.S. 401 split. The victim was taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Police did not immediately provide details surround the events leading up to the shooting.
LAGRANGE, NC, 3/31/16: 17-year-old Blake Kyndall Turner was shot and killed after a gun accidentally was discharged on March 31. Austin Ray Newcome, 18, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a stolen firearm. He’s since been confined in the W.E. Smith Detention Center. Lenoir County officials responded to a shooting incident at 3901 Mimosa Lane in LaGrange. When they arrived, deputies found a Turner, who was shot with serious injuries. After thorough investigation, the evidence showed that Newcome was handling the gun when it accidentally discharged, causing Turner to be struck. The investigation is ongoing with the follow up of the stolen firearm and the pending autopsy with the North Carolina Medical Examiners Office.
LAGRANGE, GA, 4/01/16: One man was injured about 1:45 AM Friday when he grabbed his gun as he was getting out of his car and accidentally shot himself in the hand. LaGrange police said the incident happened on the driveway of the man’s home in the 100 block of Bell Street. The victim told officers he grabbed the .40-caliber pistol from the seat of his car when the weapon went off. He told officers he did not think there was a round in the chamber. Police said the bullet also struck the car door, where it remained. The victim was taken to West Georgia Medical Center for treatment, police stated.
DES MOINES, IA, 4/01/16: Des Moines police are investigating a report of a shooting at a home near University Avenue and 11th Street. Officers were sent to 1167 11th Street at 2:18 PM. The shooting was reportedly accidental. An investigation is still underway right now.
PETROLIA, CA, 4/01/16: A 24-year-old female was reportedly accidentally shot in the chest this evening near Petrolia, according a information that came across the scanner about 9:45 PM The incident occurred on Conklin Creek Road. “Cal Fire is advising a helicopter is en route,” stated the dispatcher not long after the initial report. “Be advised Reach [the medical helicopter] will have an ETA of 120 minutes,” the dispatcher reported at 10:03 PM. UPDATE 10:10 PM: Emergency crews at the scene are reporting a .44 Magnum inflicted the bullet wound.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO, 4/01/16: A Cape Girardeau man accidentally shot himself in the arm when he fell down stairs into his basement Friday in the 1800 block of Woodlawn Avenue. Police reported the man was conscious before he was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital, according to public information officer Adam Glueck. Police responded to the call at 3:08 PM Friday. Glueck said the man was at home by himself at the time.
MACON, GA, 4/02/16: A 22-year-old South Carolina man died Sunday morning, a day after accidentally shooting himself in the head while visiting a friend in Macon. Wesley Alectus, Jr.was pronounced dead at 11:10 AM, according to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones. Alectus was visiting a friend at an apartment when deputies said he accidentally shot himself in the head Saturday morning. The shooting happened around 5:40 AM at the The Anthos at Shadowood West Apartments at 4334 West Highland Drive, the Bibb County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Randy Gonzalez said. Alectus was transported to Medical Center, Navicent Health where he died Sunday. Investigators said Alectus was handling a handgun inside the apartment when the gun fired, striking him in the head. There were two other people in the apartment at the time of the shooting, Gonzalez said. He said the two live there, but it was unclear if one or both of them witnessed the shooting. Alectus, who is from Goose Creek, SC, was visiting a friend that lived at the apartment when the shooting happened. It’s unclear who the gun belonged to or why Alectus was handling it. It was also unclear who he was visiting. Alectus was serving in the Navy, the Macon Telegraph reported.
ROCK HILL, SC, 4/02/16: A 17-year-old Northwestern High School student died in Saturday night shooting that family members said resulted from three youths playing with a loaded gun. A suspect was arrested overnight after initially fleeing the scene. The shooting was reported shortly before 10 PM Saturday at a home on 852 Horseman Drive in Rock Hill, according to Rock Hill police. The victim was found dead in the front yard of the home, police said. Investigators initially ruled the shooting a homicide, but later said it was accidental. Robreece Pickett, 20, of Rock Hill was handling the gun when it went off, said Rock Hill Police Capt. Mark Bollinger. Pickett has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and unlawful carry of a weapon. His bond has been set at $115,000. The deceased teen was identified Sunday as Ja’Terreon Thorne by the York County coroner’s office. Family members said he was a junior at Northwestern, who had earlier in his high school career briefly played on the Trojan football team. Thorne’s father, Terrence Thorne, 41, who lived at the home, said his son and two of his friends were playing in a “man cave” area that had been built in the backyard of the home. “Kids were playing with a gun and it went off and hit my son,” Thorne said. He said his son was shot in the chest, and that a neighbor called an ambulance. Thorne and the boy’s mother, Tamika Douglas, 40, said they did not know where the gun came from or what kind of gun was used. Douglas said there were no guns at the home. Breanna Roberts, 18 and a first cousin of the deceased boy, said no one else was home at the time of the shooting. She said the two friends dragged Thorne from the back yard into a side yard and sprayed him with water from a hose. Roberts said one of the friends fled on foot while the second friend remained at the scene with Thorne. Police said late Saturday that they were searching for a lone gunman dressed in black. Roberts described Thorne as a happy, funny youth who enjoyed sports and liked playing video games and going shopping. He was well known and had many friends, she said. “He was an outgoing person,” she said. “He was a funny person. I loved him so much.” Terrence Thorne described his son as “an all-out kid, he loved sports, he got along with everybody. Loving, smart.”
RIDGELAND, SC, 4/02/16: The Ridgeland Police Department is investigating after a 23-year-old black male accidentally shot himself in the right leg on Saturday afternoon. Investigators say the male was asked to hold a handgun for another male the night before, and when he was returning it to him in a wooded area behind the Siesta Motel motel bordering Wise Street, he accidentally fired it while removing it from his pocket. He reportedly gave it to the other male subject who immediately left the area, and returned to the motel to call 911. According to police, the victim refused to cooperate with the investigation, and was ultimately placed on trespass notice for the Siesta Motel at the Property Manager's request.
CHICAGO, IL, 4/02/16: A 22-year-old man shot himself in the leg Saturday night in the South Chicago neighborhood on the South Side. His gun was in his waistband when he accidentally shot himself in the 9000 block of South Burley Avenue at 8:55 PM, according to Chicago Police. He shot himself in the leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where his condition stabilized, police said.
ELGIN, IL, 4/02/16: A 20-year-old man is facing charges after he accidentally shot himself after burglarizing a vehicle and struggling with the victim more than a week ago in northwest suburban Elgin. About 2:20 AM on April 2, officers responded to shots fired in the 500 block of Sunset Drive, according to a statement from Elgin police. Several residents of a home on that block reported they heard a car alarm go off and when they looked outside, they saw two suspects burglarizing a vehicle, police said. The owner of the vehicle confronted the suspects and a fight broke out, police said. The victim knew one of the suspects, 20-year-old Lewis C. McCracken, who pulled out a firearm and went inside the home. McCracken and the victim struggled over the gun, which went off, striking McCracken, police said. He then fled the scene. The victim and the other residents were not hurt. McCracken, of the 100 block of Josephine Drive, was taken into custody and charged with home invasion and unlawful use of a weapon, both felonies, according to police. He was scheduled to appear in Kane County bond court Sunday morning.
MANHATTAN, KS, 4/02/16: Just after 2:30 AM, on Saturday, officers were dispatched to Via Christi Hospital for a report of an individual that had accidentally shot himself while manipulating a handgun in his residence in the 800 block of Ratone Street in Manhattan. Police reported Matthew T. Collet, 29, accidentally shot himself in the hand as well as the leg. Collett’s injuries are considered to be non-life threatening.
KINGMAN, AZ, 4/02/16: Another day, another accidental shooting. A 24-year-old Kingman man was taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center Saturday night after he reportedly accidentally shot himself in the shoulder. Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home in the 1500 block of Northfield Avenue shortly after 10:10 PM and determined that William Ray Bagley Jr. has accidentally shot himself. The type of firearm was not specified. Bagley was reportedly intoxicated, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter. He was taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center.
