GunFail

Another ugly week, by the numbers. But then, they’re all pretty ugly. Twenty-three people accidentally shot themselves, 12 kids were accidentally shot, nine GunFAIL incidents resulted in fatalities, and seven people accidentally shot family members. And in one rather odd spike, eight people accidentally fired guns while out and about, shopping, dining, or otherwise availing themselves of public services, but five of the eight accidents happened in hotel rooms, with two of the five incidents involving bullets passing through the walls into the next units.

The rest of the week’s GunFAILs included your routine mix of gun range accidents (two), imaginary intruders (two), real intruders who weren’t shot while roommates were accidentally shot instead (one), security guards (one) and law enforcement officers (two) who accidentally fired their weapons, hunting accidents (one), and of course, people who accidentally fired their guns because they were cleaning (or “inspecting”) them while they were still loaded (five).

Plenty of oddities among the GunFAILs this week, too. Out in Idaho, a member of the III%er militia took his 12-year-old daughter with him to the local gun range for a militia meeting, after which someone clearing a weapon accidentally fired a round which ricocheted off a metal table and struck the girl in the stomach. It will surprise no one to learn that the “militia” are no better with their guns than anyone else. Another semi-political GunFAIL gives us our post title this week, thanks to Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Henry Saad getting stopped with a loaded revolver in his luggage at the Detroit Metro Airport. You may remember Saad as one of the two judges not given a vote and eventually confirmed in 2005, following the infamous “Gang of 14” agreement that defused a Republican threat to use the “nuclear option” to eliminate the filibuster on judicial nominations. Heh.

In the “places there shouldn’t be a gun, because problems are just too predictable” category: the Chico State fraternity member who accidentally shot himself in the hand in the Alpha Gamma Rho house, and the woman sleeping in a motel with a gun under her pillow who thought she heard a noise and then accidentally shot herself in the chest while grabbing it.

Lastly, from South Dakota we have the story of the latest armed teacher to accidentally shoot himself, though at least it wasn’t in school this time. It’s unclear from the story whether this third-grade teacher regularly brought the weapon with him to school, but it was allegedly in the pocket of a coat he dropped while at home at 6:20 PM on a Friday night, and he got a 9mm hole from his stomach up through the back of his left shoulder for his trouble. The Bon Homme County Sheriff reassures us that this is “just a freak accident,” though. No need to worry about teachers who carry guns that fire when the coat it’s in drops to the floor. It’s all good from this point on, mathematically speaking. It’s not like a coat can fall twice, right?

Jonathan Howard says 29-year-old Robert Chavez was arrested Monday in the shooting of the boy late Sunday. According to Howard, investigators determined that Chavez was showing the boy a gun when it discharged and wounded the boy. The boy was hospitalized in critical condition but Howard says his prognosis is improving. BRUNSWICK, ME, 2/21/16: Brunswick police are investigating an accidental shooting Sunday night that sent two men to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Brunswick fire and police responded to 8 Guadalcanal Drive for the shooting at 8:57 PM. Officers arrived at the residence to find two injured men and administered first aid until medical personnel arrived. According to Brunswick Police Cmdr. Marc Hagan, a 29-year-old West Bath man showed a 28-year-old Brunswick man his unloaded Sig Sauer 9 millimeter handgun. When the West Bath man reloaded the weapon, “it fired a round that went through his hand,” Hagan states in a press release. “The round then continued through the other parties’ leg, and struck a refrigerator in the residence.” The 29-year-old of West Bath who fired the gun was transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with a gunshot wound to his hand. The 28-year-old Brunswick man was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with a gunshot wound to his leg. Neither injury is considered life threatening. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time. Police did not release the names of either of the men who were shot with the single bullet. Hagan said there were at least seven people at the party and  the man who fired the gun had been drinking alcohol. He could not say if alcohol is a factor at this point but stressed, “Obviously anyone who has had any amount of alcohol should not be handling a firearm.” Hagan said both injured men were guests at the gathering. The Brunswick man who was shot in the leg had first showed the West Bath man his firearm, and the West Bath man in turn showed the Brunswick man his weapon. It was unclear if both men normally carry firearms. There was no confrontation involved, Hagan said.

HARTSVILLE, IN, 2/21/16: A 6-year-old in Bartholomew County accidentally shot and killed his father. The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a person shot around 9:15 PM. Sunday in the 200 block of Clinton Street in Hartsville. On arrival, deputies found James Lonaker, 62, with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Lonaker was flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital, but he died en route. Investigators believe Lonaker’s 6-year-old son accidentally shot his father when he picked up an unsecured .38 caliber revolver and fired a shot. Lonaker’s wife and one-year old infant child were also in the house, but they were not injured. Sheriff Matt Myers calls the shooting a tragic accident. “This is a tragedy that is told and retold all across the country and a tragedy that is easily avoided. I urge every responsible gun owner and parent to take this tragedy to heart,” said Sheriff Matt Myers. “Many firearms accidents in the home can be prevented simply by making sure that firearms are kept unloaded and safely stored, with ammunition secured in a separate location. Please keep your guns in a secure location out of reach of children.”

PHILADELPHIA, MS, 2/21/16: A teenager was fatally shot Sunday afternoon, inside a vehicle parked at the Golden Moon Casino. The Neshoba County Sheriff's Department and tribal police responded. "When officers arrived on scene they found the victim, which is a 14-year-old male from Scott County. He received a single gunshot wound," says Sheriff Tommy Waddell. Waddell is currently ruling the death accidental. "At this time, we believe the victim found a .357 revolver that was in the console. He was playing with the gun when it discharged," says Waddell. The sheriff's department obtained surveillance video from the casino and spoke with the victim's sibling that was in the car at the time to determine what happened. "The sibling is actually the one that went into the casino and summoned the parents on what had taken place," says Waddell. Sheriff Waddell says the children were left in the vehicle for roughly 15 minutes before the incident occurred. The gunshot wound is believed to be self-inflicted, but officials are awaiting the autopsy results. "At this time we believe it was completely an accidental shooting," says Waddell.

RUPERT, ID, 2/21/16: A Burley girl was accidentally shot Sunday at the Rupert Gun Range. Minidoka County Sheriff Eric Snarr said in a statement that the 12-year-old girl was shot at 2:19 PM and was taken by ambulance to Minidoka Memorial Hospital. She was then taken by helicopter to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello. Snarr said the girl’s mother reported that she was in stable condition Monday morning. The incident is still under investigation and no other details were released Monday. MORE: The daughter of a militia member was shot and wounded Sunday after a local meeting of the III% Idaho group. The 12-year-old girl, whose name was not released, was taken by helicopter to a hospital for treatment after the shooting at the Rupert Gun Range, reported the Twin Falls Times-News. Her mother said the girl was in stable condition Monday morning, and the shooting remains under investigation. It’s not clear who was handling the weapon when it fired, wounding the girl. Brandon Curtiss, the president of the state III% militia group, provided some details about the girl and the shooting in aFacebook post seeking donations for the wounded child’s family. He said militia group members wanted to take target practice after a county meeting of the militia group — which was involved in last month’s armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Curtiss said a militia member’s gun accidentally fired while cleaning the weapon, and the bullet struck a metal table beneath a shelter and ricocheted. The bullet struck the girl, who is the daughter of a militia group member, in the stomach and then exited her side. “It sounds as if she is going to be ok, she was able to tell (her father) she loved him as they were loading her into the helicopter,” Curtiss said. He urged group members to contribute to the III% Idaho group’s PayPal account and specify that their donations were intended for the girl’s family. A supporter of the group offered her prayers and said the shooting was “a reminder to watch your barrel discipline!” The III% Idaho group took part in the 2014 armed standoff at the Bundy ranch in Nevada, but Oregon militant leader Ammon Bundy rejected an offer for assistance from Curtiss after group members tried to provide security at the nature preserve occupation.

The gun, a .38 caliber Derringer-style handgun, fired when Lawrence dropped it and it landed on the hammer. "There is nothing to indicate that Mr. Lawrence was reckless in his handling of the weapon," Abben said. Paramedics took Lawrence to UnityPoint - Allen Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, law enforcement said. Lawrence, who worked as a probation officer with the Department of Corrections, was also involved in the local chapter of the NAACP.
