Erin Johnson
Texas Christian University, School for Classical & Contemporary Dance
During her senior year of high school, Erin Johnson felt that she needed a stronger foundation before joining a company. Texas Christian University gave her the maturity and training that she was looking for. Johnson, who graduated this spring with a BFA in ballet, arranged her heavy dance schedule so she could pursue another interest: a minor in business. While at TCU, she worked with guest choreographers and ballet luminaries like Susan Jaffe and Jacques d’Amboise. Her junior year, she danced her first Balanchine piece, Valse-Fantaisie. “It was super-rewarding when we got to perform it because it was so physically taxing,” she says. TCU also helped her make an invaluable career connection: When Eugene Ballet Company artistic director Toni Pimble was a visiting choreographer, Johnson expressed interest in her company. Pimble offered her a contract, and Johnson is elated to make her debut with Eugene Ballet Company this fall. —Caroline Seymour

Alumni Spotlight: Charbel Rohayem
Alonzo King LINES Ballet BFA, Dominican University of California
Charbel Rohayem started his formal dance studies at the age of 16, so he knew that he needed to catch up before joining a company. He found the perfect balance between training and professional exposure at the Alonzo King LINES Ballet BFA program at Dominican University of California. Since some of his classes were held at the Alonzo King LINES Dance Center, being exposed to the LINES Ballet company dancers gave Rohayem the inspiration he needed to stay focused. Though skewed toward contemporary ballet, the program also emphasizes classical ballet, modern, composition, improvisation, repertoire and master classes. As a BFA student, Rohayem participated in several workshops with company members from Nederlands Dans Theater, The Forsythe Company and Loni Landon Dance Projects. He even earned an arts management minor. Now a 2016 graduate, Rohayem feels “ready to enter the field, but also ready to contribute to it.” This season he will join NW Dance Project and is excited to explore another avenue of contemporary dance. —CS

Point Park University, Conservatory of Performing Arts
If you’d told a younger Anna Dobbins that she would end up at Point Park University pursuing her BFA in dance, she would have said that college was simply not part of her plan. Looking back now, the 2016 graduate says she couldn’t be happier. “Point Park is a really well-rounded school,” she says. In addition to ballet, “taking jazz, tap, modern and even African, ballroom and character classes prepared me with the tools to choose any dance company or any genre.” Still, ballet was her ultimate focus, and she considers performing in Romeo and Juliet the highlight of her college years. Dobbins also had the chance to work with guest choreographers like Emery LeCrone and professor emeritus Nicolas Petrov. This fall, Dobbins will start her career with Cleveland Ballet, which relaunched last year with a total of six dancers. “I’m really excited to be part of the journey of this company and grow into the vision that they have for it.” —CS
